    Description

In 2023, Eswatini had the highest unemployment rate in the world, at 37.6 percent. Of the 10 countries with the highest unemployment rates, nine were in Sub-Saharan Africa. What exactly is unemployment? The unemployment rate is the number of people in the workforce currently looking for jobs but not working. This number does not include students and retirees, as they are not looking for work, nor does it include people who have given up on finding a job (known as discouraged workers). Comparing international unemployment rates can be problematic, however, as different countries use different methodologies when classifying unemployment. For example, Niger records the third lowest unemployment rate in the world, despite often being listed as the least developed country worldwide - this is because the majority of the population engage in subsistence farming, with very little opportunity for paid employment. Causes of unemployment in less developed countries A major driver in unemployment in these countries is conflict. In particular, internally displaced persons (IDPs) want to work, but moving to another part of the country disrupts their business network and moves them into a local economy with different labor demand. Countries with low levels of economic development, as roughly indicated by a low GDP per capita, often have fewer labor market opportunities, leading to high unemployment rates.

    Description

In 2024, the age group of 20 to 29 years old experienced the highest unemployment rate in South Korea. The average unemployment rate stood at 2.8 percent. Unemployment in South Korea The unemployment rate refers to the percentage of the economically active population not in employment but actively looking for a job. This does not include the economically inactive population, such as students, pensioners, homemakers, or discouraged workers. With a population of over 51 million, South Korea has grown to become one of the world's largest economies but struggles with increasing unemployment, especially among the youth and elderly. Youth unemployment in South Korea The unemployment situation of young people in South Korea has deteriorated sharply in recent years, while the number of economically active youth has declined steadily over the past decade. On average, it took young people more than 11 months to find their first job. This situation can be attributed to various social, demographic, and labor market-specific factors within the country. Despite the very high level of education among youth, which is reflected in the high university enrollment rate, more and more companies are demanding concrete work experience from applicants, which is difficult to acquire in the existing South Korean education system. It should also not be neglected that the retirement age was raised from 55 to 60 in 2016, but more young people, especially millennials, entered the labor market during this time. The dual labor market structure in South Korea, characterized by the existing wage gap between large and small companies and between regular and irregular jobs, is another factor in youth unemployment. While fewer and fewer young people are employed as regular workers, young graduates prefer positions in large companies with a permanent employment contract.

    Description

In 2023, the broadest measure of labor underutilization, designated U-6 (which includes the unemployed, workers employed part-time for economic reasons, and those marginally attached to the labor force), was 5.3 percent in Virginia, significantly lower than the 6.9-percent rate for the nation, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. Regional Commissioner Alexandra Hall Bovee noted that the six alternative measures of labor underutilization in Virginia were significantly lower than the national rates. In Virginia and nationally, none of the measures significantly differed from the previous year. The official concept of unemployment, U-3 in the U-1 to U-6 range of measures, includes all jobless persons who are available to take a job and have actively sought work in the past 4 weeks. In 2023, 13 states had rates significantly lower than those of the U.S. for all six measures of labor underutilization, while 4 states and the District of Columbia had rates higher than those of the U.S. for all six measures. The U-4 rate includes discouraged workers; thus, the difference between U-3 and U-4 reflects the degree of would-be job-seeker discouragement. At the national level, the difference between U-3 and U-4 was +0.3 percentage point in 2023. No state had a noteworthy difference between these two measures.

The U-5 rate includes all people who are marginally attached to the labor force, and U-6 adds those who are involuntary part-time workers. Therefore, the larger the difference between U-5 and U-6, the higher the incidence of this form of "underemployment." In 2023, 47 states and the District of Columbia had significant differences between their U-5 and U-6 rates. California had the largest gap (+3.5 percentage points), followed by Oregon (+3.3 points) and Washington (+3.0 points). At the national level, the difference between U-5 and U-6 was +2.4 percentage points.

Relative to 2022, Pennsylvania was the only state to experience significant decreases in all 6 measures of labor underutilization, while Mississippi had decreases in 5 of the 6 measures. For each measure, rates declined over the year for at least three states (U-2 and U-6) and as many as seven states (U-4). Only California experienced over-the-year increases in all 6 measures, while New Jersey had increases in 5 of the 6 measures. Three additional states had increases in one measure (U-1 for Indiana and Texas and U-5 for Idaho). At the national level, rates were unchanged over the year for all six measures.

    Description

    Context

This is a paid research survey to explore the linkage between mental illness and unemployment. NAMI has conducted multiple surveys verifying the high unemployment rate among those with mental illness, but this is the only survey to date which targets causation (why they are unemployed). Statistical significance of the variance has long since been proven by previous, larger samples.

You are free to visualize and publish results, please just credit me by name.

    Collection methodology

I received several messages about methodology of collection because various people would like to use this data for papers.

    • I paid respondents on Survey Monkey in a general population sampling. I did not target any specific demographic as not to get skewed results. Survey Monkey stratifies the sample according to certain characteristics like income and location.

    • I know that the general population sampling went well because the number of people self identifying as having a mental illness is consistent with larger samples.

    • Although we disqualified people without a mental illness, they were still given the complete survey. That means that the data contains sampling of people with and without mental illness and a yes/no indicator.

    Potential area's to investigate

    • Linkage between unemployment and education level
    • The effect of a gap on your resume on income level
    • Symptom/side effects impact on employment
    • The effectiveness of social welfare programs
    • The linkage between gaps in your resume and hospitalizations due to mental illness

    Content

***Sample size:** n = 334; 80 w/ mental illness - this proportion is approximately equal to estimates of the general population diagnosed with mental illness (typically estimated at 20-25% according to various studies).*

    Important data transformation note

When comparing the actual rate to government statistics, it is important to take into account the labor force participation rate (the % of people who are legally considered to be in the workforce). People not included in the unemployment statistic, like discouraged workers (for example the mentally ill) will be "not participating" in the workforce.

    Iran
    Description

This statistic shows the unemployment rate of Iran from 1999 to 2023. In 2023, Iran's unemployment rate was estimated to amount to 9.04 percent of the total labor force. Employment and economy in Iran Iran’s unemployment rate has been above 10 percent for the last 10 years, and this rate is estimated to have peaked in 2014, when estimates reached 14 percent. Also, many of those who are considered employed in Iran are also considered underemployed. Unemployment in Iran is especially high among young people and women; over 70 percent of the population’s close to 80 million inhabitants are of working age, increasing the overall demand of these inhabitants for work. Iran’s economy has also been in a recession, which has exacerbated the difficulties to meet the employment demands of its inhabitants. Although the economy is expected to recover slightly in 2014, Iran's GDP is expected to decrease and the real GDP growth rate is either negative or quite low. In times of a struggling economy, it is typically more difficult to create jobs and introduce people to the labor force. Because Iran's economic activity still depends to a large extent on oil revenues, this also reduces the stability of the economy and employment. With a decreasing per capita GDP and a high inflation rate people are also more vulnerable to changes in income and employment, making the unemployment a pressing issue that the country will have to manage.
