    Description

As of July 22, 2025, the majority of the transgender population aged 13 and over in the United States were living in a state with no ban on transgender people's use of bathrooms or facilities. However, ***** percent of the transgender population were living in a state which banned transgender people from using bathrooms and facilities consistent with their gender identity in K-12 schools only, while **** percent were living in a state which banned transgender people from using bathrooms and facilities corresponding to their gender identity in all government-owned buildings and spaces, including schools, colleges, and more. A further **** percent were living in a state that restricted transgender people from using bathrooms and facilities consistent with their gender identity in K-12 schools and at least some government-owned buildings as well. Anti-education legislation Statewide legislation affecting LGBTQ+ people in the U.S. has been on the rise recently, especially in K-12 schools. Many states have taken legal action to restrict schools from teaching topics of racism, sexism, gender identity, sexual orientation, and systemic inequality to students. However, studies show that Americans typically remain politically divided over how these topics should be taught; in 2022, the majority of Democratic parents were found to believe that children should be taught that the legacy of slavery still affects the position of Black people in American society today while the majority of Republican parents thought that children should be taught that slavery is a part of American history but does not affect the position of Black people in American society today. Book bans Censorship of these topics has also been seen in K-12 libraries, with book bans occurring in multiple states throughout the country. As of 2022, Texas had the highest number of books banned in the U.S., followed by Florida. Florida's Parental Rights in Education Act, which is often referred to as the "Don't Say Gay" law, has been particularly controversial as it aims to prevent discussion of gender identity or sexual orientation and remove books featuring LGBTQ+ characters in K-12 schools and libraries. Along with potentially harming LGBTQ+ students, K-12 teachers have also highlighted how these laws and debates over what topics should be taught in the classroom may negatively impact their ability to do their job.

    Description

Germany and the Netherlands are the two countries in Europe with the greatest share of transgender people indicating that they have changed or are in the process of changing their legal gender, with 39 percent of respondents in both countries. Changing their gender on legal documents can be a huge milestone for many trans people, as it makes it easier for them to be identified identified according to their gender identity.

Trans people may experience great difficulties when going through the process of changing their legal gender, as many countries require medical and psychological evaluations before proceeding with the process. In such cases, where trans people do not trust public authorities to treat them in a non-discriminatory manner, very few transgender people go through the process to legally change gender, such as in Bulgaria, Lithuania, and Croatia, where less than five percent of respondents indicate they have done or are doing so.

    Description

The EU Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Survey (EU LGBT) was conducted by the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA). It is the first ever EU-wide online survey to establish an overview concerning the lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans people (18 years or older) and their experiences with regard to fundamental rights in the 28 EU Member States. Up until now, there has been very little comparable data collected across the EU about the everyday experiences of LGBT people with respect to discrimination, and lot of the available information is limited to occasional news reports and court judgements. As the first EU-wide survey of its kind, the results support the development of equal treatment policies for LGBT people in the European Union and set the agenda for years to come. Based on the survey results, national and European policy makers, as well as non-governmental organisations, are able to better target their advocacy strategies and activities to support LGBT communities to live and express themselves freely in a non-discriminatory environment. The survey was completely anonymous (no additional data on the participants and their sessions were logged in any way). The survey data collection operated by Gallup Europe, a professional survey and consultancy firm. In order to ensure that the survey delivers evidence needed for policy making, the EU LGBT Survey counted on the participation of a large and diverse group of lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans people from each country. Hence, it was vitally important for the success of the survey that FRA and Gallup worked together with civil society organisations to reach a wide audience and raise awareness concerning the survey, including participants emailing the survey, sharing it through social media or simply inviting LGBT friends to take part. More information can be found on the FRA website The data represents a self-selected sample and not a random sample. Please see technical report for details on data collection and dissemination of survey to potential respondents. Web-based survey

The small island nation of ***** was ranked as the country in Europe which has the most LGBTQ-friendly laws and policies in 2024 by Rainbow Europe. The country has made great progress in recent years in passing laws which protect the rights of its LGBTQ citizens and residents, such as outlawing so-called "conversion therapy", banning genital mutilation for intersex people, promoting anti-discrimination practices in the workplace, allowing transgender people to more easily change their gender legally. It has also legalized same-sex marriage. EU states lead the way on LGBTQ rights Other leading countries in Europe for LGBTQ rights include Belgium, Denmark, and Spain, with the countries which performed well being concentrated in southern, western, and northern Europe. Many of the top performing countries are members of the European Union, which has specific provisions about protecting minority rights as a prelude to membership, however, it is notable that several member states in central-eastern and south-eastern Europe perform particularly poorly, notably Poland, Romania, and Bulgaria. The poor state of LGBTQ rights in eastern Europe Unfortunately, there are still some countries in Europe where LGBTQ rights are not respected or legally enshrined at all, mostly concentrated among non-EU members in eastern Europe. Azerbaijan, Turkey, Armenia, Russia, and Belarus make up the five worst performing states, with the homophobic stances of their governments intensifying in recent years.

    Description

Sex Reassignment Surgery Market size was valued at USD 579.06 Million in 2024 and is projected to reach USD 3394.42 Million by 2031, growing at a CAGR of 24.74% from 2024 to 2031.

Global Sex Reassignment Surgery Market Drivers

Raising Knowledge and Gratitude for Transgender Rights: The increasing social acceptance and acknowledgement of transgender people and their rights is one of the main motivators. In the last ten years, there has been a significant change in public perceptions, as transgender problems have been more visible in politics, the media, and popular culture. More people are seeking gender-affirming operations as a result of the increased acceptance and knowledge of gender variation.

Progress in Medical Techniques and Technology: Surgery for sex reassignment has greatly improved in terms of safety, efficacy, and results thanks to medical advances. Technological advancements in surgery, like minimally invasive methods, have shortened recovery periods and minimized complications. Furthermore, improvements in hormone therapy and post-operative care have improved patient outcomes overall, increasing the desirability and accessibility of surgery.

Insurance coverage and policies that support healthcare: Healthcare laws have changed in numerous nations to better meet the requirements of transgender patients. More and more insurance companies are paying all or part of the SRS-related expenses. Gender-affirming care must now be covered by many insurance policies, thanks to laws like the Affordable Care Act in the US. The financial barrier for anyone thinking about surgery is lowered by this assistance.

Social and Psychological Advantages: Studies have demonstrated that gender-affirming operations can greatly enhance transgender people's psychological health. Following surgery, decreased levels of anxiety, despair, and gender dysphoria all contribute to an overall increase in quality of life. As more people in the medical community become aware of these advantages, healthcare professionals are supporting and endorsing SRS as a good option for qualified patients.

A Growing Amount of Providers of Specialized Healthcare: Surgeons and medical facilities that specialize in gender-affirming operations are becoming more and more numerous. Higher standards of practice are ensured and access to care is improved by this growth in specialist providers. Patients will have more options for care that meets their needs when there are more qualified professionals in the field, which will further propel market growth.

International Law and Advocacy: Transgender rights are being promoted in large part by international advocacy groups and legal reforms. Laws that safeguard against discrimination and acknowledge gender identity are being implemented in many nations, which encourages people to seek gender-affirming medical operations. For example, laws supporting transgender healthcare, including SRS, have been passed in Canada, Argentina, and some parts of Europe.

    Description

IMDb was the only source from which data was extracted. The sample was constructed using the tool search engines, filtering “feature films” (over 45 min of lentgh), excluding “adult titles” and excluding “released”. In order to obtain a comprehensive length of time, all productions from 1895 to December 2019 were included according to a search carried out in March 2020. To collect only those films that could have detailed information, the number of items was limited to those with over 50 user ratings (N = 119809) as a way of minimally controlling the popularity of the published work.

In the resulting sample (N = 1768), the presence of descriptors in the field “plot” was coded, designating different terms related to the LGBTQ+ community. Those included the following terms and their variants with similar etymology: homosexual (homo/homosexuality), gay, lesbian, trans (transsexual, transgender) and queer. After adding those productions that had a descriptor term from this list in the keywords field, the total of the items corresponding to these categories was 9409 films. This decision responds to the need to reflect in the sample films in which there is representation of the group, but it is not necessarily part of the plot or is revealed through the course of it. It is also supported by the documentary tradition, according to which keywords tend to overlap with the plot or summary (La Barre & de Novais Cordeiro, 2012, p. 241).

The following information was extracted from each item (movie):

    • Production by country and production by language in each year. In co-productions, only the first producing country was considered and the other countries discarded.

    • Identity of the group (gay, lesbian, trans, etc.) as per the plot keywords. Several identities and expressions such as transsexuality and transgender have been included under the label “trans” as it was impossible to recognize the correct expression from the labels provided by IMDb.

    • Cinema genres. Using the first two descriptors, a list of genre pairs was created, which were later grouped into 13 generic categories, as per the formal qualities of the theme: Drama (any combinations of the drama category that were not included in other categories), Comedy (combinations including comedy that were not considered in other categories), Action/Adventure, Melodrama (Drama + Comedy), Horror, Crime (including thrillers), Fantasy (including Science Fiction), Biography (in both fictional and documentary forms), Documentary (excluding biographies and fake documentaries but including News), Romantic Comedy (Romance + Comedy), Animation (excluding documentary formats) and Music/Musical feature films.

    • Age ratings. Parental Advisory guidelines have changed significantly over the decades, from the first classifications in the United Kingdom, Germany, and the United States to today. In order to establish a suitable comparison, the descriptor provided by IMDb, which is usually established by the MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America), was used. When this was omitted, the descriptor used was determined as per the recommended age: Universal, Parental Guidance (PG), 12-13, 14-16, 17-18, as well as X and banned, according to the historical equivalence as provided by IMDd (2020).

Data was pooled to consider evolution by historical periods and trends in a single group or correlational ex post facto design. Subsequently, the data was analyzed with the statistical package SPSS v.26. To visualize the main trends from the data, Tableau 2020 software was used.

The market is experiencing significant growth due to the increasing number of individuals opting for sex change procedures worldwide. The North American nation is in the vanguard of LGBTQ rights and has passed multiple laws assuring equality for this group, such as allowing adoption by same-sex couples, protecting transgender rights, and banning conversion therapy. Meanwhile, its land neighbor, the United States, had the share of the population that identifies as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender increased steadily between 2012 and 2021. Acceptance around the globe According to a survey conducted in 2021 in 27 countries, opinions on the rights of same-sex couples varied greatly around the world. Western European and American nations were particularly supportive of marriage or, failing that, some form of legal recognition for homosexual couples.

    Description

Transgender people, often referred to as the Hijras in the Indian subcontinent, are an officially recognized third gender in the country and consider themselves neither male nor female. As per the latest census in 2011, India recorded over *** thousand people who identified as the third gender, most of whom came from the northern state of Uttar Pradesh.

    Socioeconomics of Hijras

Hijras are associated by several terms, depending on culture and linguistics. In various Indian languages, Hijras are called Napunsakudu (Telugu), Thiru Nangai (Tamil), Khwaja Sara (Urdu), Khusra (Punjabi) and Mangalamukhi (Kannada) among others. The third gender is inherent to Indian mythology.

Socio-economically, Hijras live in well-defined communities, led by a Guru or teacher. They consist of generations of the third gender who were rejected by or fled from their birth-families. Apart from sex-work, performing at auspicious social gatherings or plain extortion was how most survived. This was due to the lack of education and employment due to their low status in their society’s hierarchy. This also meant that they underwent brutal violence with little or no opportunity for justice.

Indian law and the third gender

When the country’s Supreme Court re-criminalized homosexuality in 2013, there was a sharp increase in violence against the third gender by the Indian Police Service, far from investigating reports of sexual assault. Later in 2014, with the support of activists and NGOs lobbying for human rights, the same highest court ruled the recognition of the third gender community, equal to the socially and economically backward class. This meant that they now had access to proportional representation in education and jobs.

    Description

As of April 2024, 55 percent of the LGBT population lived in the 50 states and the District of Columbia where private health insurance service providers weren't allowed to deny coverage for transgender-related health care services, such as sex reassignment surgery. However, only 40 percent lived in states where health insurance protections included sexual orientation and gender identity.

LGBT Americans The share of Americans self-identifying as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender has grown in recent years. This suggests that insurance protections which cover LGBT-related health care services will also continue to grow in importance. The prevalence of younger Americans self-identifying as LGBT when compared with older generations confirms this. Millennials and Gen Xers are much more likely to personally identify as LGBT than previous generations were. Growing acceptance and tolerance in wider society means that more people are willing to be open about their gender identity and sexual orientation. For instance, support for same-sex marriage in the U.S. underwent a huge shift over the past two decades with the majority of Americans being in favor of it since 2011.
