METHODOLOGY NOTES (across all datasets for this indicator)
All historical data reported for Census geographies (metropolitan areas, county, city and tract) use current legal boundaries and names. A Priority Development Area (PDA) is a locally-designated area with frequent transit service, where a jurisdiction has decided to concentrate most of its housing and jobs growth for development in the foreseeable future. PDA boundaries are current as of December 2022.

Population estimates for Bay Area counties and cities are from the California Department of Finance, which are as of January 1st of each year. Population estimates for non-Bay Area regions are from the U.S. Census Bureau. Decennial Census years reflect population as of April 1st of each year whereas population estimates for intercensal estimates are as of July 1st of each year. Population estimates for Bay Area tracts are from the decennial Census (1970-2020) and the American Community Survey (2011-2021 5-year rolling average). Estimates of population density for tracts use gross acres as the denominator.

Population estimates for Bay Area tracts and PDAs are from the decennial Census (1970-2020) and the American Community Survey (2011-2021 5-year rolling average). Population estimates for PDAs are allocated from tract-level Census population counts using an area ratio. For example, if a quarter of a Census tract lies with in a PDA, a quarter of its population will be allocated to that PDA. Estimates of population density for PDAs use gross acres as the denominator. Note that the population densities between PDAs reported in previous iterations of Vital Signs are mostly not comparable due to minor differences and an updated set of PDAs (previous iterations reported Plan Bay Area 2040 PDAs, whereas current iterations report Plan Bay Area 2050 PDAs).

Population by age groups, race and gender, and the poverty by race is attached to the split tract geography to create this split tract with population and poverty data. Split tract data is the product of 2020 census tracts split by 2023 incorporated city boundaries and unincorporated community/countywide statistical areas (CSA) boundaries as of July 1, 2023. The census tract boundaries have been altered and aligned where necessary with legal city boundaries and unincorporated areas, including shoreline/coastal areas. Census Tract:Every 10 years the Census Bureau counts the population of the United States as mandated by Constitution. The Census Bureau (https://www.census.gov/)released 2020 geographic boundaries data including census tracts for the analysis and mapping of demographic information across the United States. City Boundary:City Boundary data is the base map information for the County of Los Angeles. These City Boundaries are based on the Los Angeles County Seamless Cadastral Landbase. The Landbase is jointly maintained by the Los Angeles County Assessor and the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works (DPW). This layer represents current city boundaries within Los Angeles County. The DPW provides the most current shapefiles representing city boundaries and city annexations. True, legal boundaries are only determined on the ground by surveyors licensed in the State of California.Countywide Statistical Areas (CSA): The countywide Statistical Area (CSA) was defined to provide a common geographic boundary for reporting departmental statistics for unincorporated areas and incorporated Los Angeles city to the Board of Supervisors. The CSA boundary and CSA names are established by the CIO and the LA County Enterprise GIS group worked with the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors Unincorporated Area and Field Deputies that reflect as best as possible the general name preferences of residents and historical names of areas. This data is primarily focused on broad statistics and reporting, not mapping of communities. This data is not designed to perfectly represent communities, nor jurisdictional boundaries such as Angeles National Forest. Split tract polygon data is created by intersecting 2020 census tract polygons, LA Country City Boundary polygons and Countywide Statistical Areas (CSA) polygon data. The resulting polygon boundary aligned and matched with the legal city boundary whenever possible. Notes:1. Population and poverty data estimated as of July 1, 2023. 2. 2010 Census tract and 2020 census tracts are not the same. Similarly, city and community boundaries are as of July 1, 2023.

This product will include some of the demographic and housing tables previously included in the 2010 Census Summary File 1 (SF1). It will include topics such as age, sex, race, Hispanic or Latino origin, household type, family type, relationship to householder, group quarters population, housing occupancy and housing tenure. Some tables will be iterated by race and ethnicity.

Medical Service Study Areas (MSSAs)As defined by California's Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development (OSHPD) in 2013, "MSSAs are sub-city and sub-county geographical units used to organize and display population, demographic and physician data" (Source). Each census tract in CA is assigned to a given MSSA. The most recent MSSA dataset (2014) was used. Spatial data are available via OSHPD at the California Open Data Portal. This information may be useful in studying health equity.Definitions:Race/Ethnicity: Race/ethnicity is categorized as: All races/ethnicities, Non-Hispanic (NH) White, NH Black, Asian/Pacific Islander, or Hispanic. "All races" includes all of the above, as well as other and unknown race/ethnicity and American Indian/Alaska Native. The latter two groups are not reported separately due to small numbers for many cancer sites.Racial/Ethnic Composition: Distribution of residents' race/ethnicity (e.g., % Hispanic, % non-Hispanic White, % non-Hispanic Black, % non-Hispanic Asian/Pacific Islander). The Congressional District Summary File contains the data compiled from the questions asked of all people and about every housing unit in the 2010 Census.

These Demographic Data are U.S. Census American Community Survey Data, from the 2014 5-year set. Data Driven Detroit calculated densities (Per Sq Mile) by dividing the population by the ALAND10 field, which is the census land area field, in square meters.

This American Community Survey (ACS) dataset identifies demographic and housing estimates by zip code tabulation areas within the United States, from 2012 through 2016. The dataset identifies sex and age, race and housing units by Zip Code Tabulation Area.

This map's colors indicate which population is larger in each area: urban (green) or rural (yellow). The map's layers contain total population counts by sex, age, and race groups for Nation, State Legislative Districts Upper, State Legislative Districts Lower, Congressional District in the United States and Puerto Rico.The U.S. Census designates each census block as part of an urban area or as rural. Larger geographies in this map such as block group, tract, county and state can therefore have a mix of urban and rural population. This map illustrates the 100% urban areas in dark green, and 100% rural areas in dark yellow. Areas with mixed urban/rural population have softer shades of green or yellow, to give a visual indication of where change may be happening. Not all lines of all tables listed above are included in this layer. Duplicative counts were dropped. For example, P0030001 was dropped, as it is duplicative of P0010001.To protect the privacy and confidentiality of respondents, their data has been protected using differential privacy techniques by the U.S. Census Bureau.

The American Community Survey (ACS) is an ongoing survey that provides data every year -- giving communities the current information they need to plan investments and services. The ACS covers a broad range of topics about social, economic, demographic, and housing characteristics of the U.S. population. Much of the ACS data provided on the Census Bureau's Web site are available separately by age group, race, Hispanic origin, and sex. Summary files, Subject tables, Data profiles, and Comparison profiles are available for the nation, all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, every congressional district, every metropolitan area, and all counties and places with populations of 65,000 or more. Detailed Tables contain the most detailed cross-tabulations published for areas 65k and more. The data are population counts. There are over 31,000 variables in this dataset.

The dataset contains information on California’s Medical Service Study Areas (MSSA), at the census tract level for 2000. MSSAs are sub-city and sub-county geographical units used to organize and display population, demographic and physician data. MSSA areas are a geographic analysis unit defined by the California Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development. MSSA are a good foundation for needs assessment analysis, healthcare planning, and healthcare policy development.

The Census Bureau advises data users to verify table universes are the same before comparing data across census years. Summary Tape File (STF) 1 consists of four sets of computer-readable data files containing detailed tabulations of the nation's population and housing characteristics produced from the 1980 Census. This series is comprised of STF 1A, STF 1B, STF 1C, and STF 1D. All files in the STF 1 series are identical, containing 321 substantive data variables organized in the form of 59 "tables," as well as standard geographic identification variables. All of the data items contained in the STF 1 files were tabulated from the "complete count" or "100-percent" questions included on the 1980 Census questionnaire. All four groups of files within the STF 1 series have identical record formats and technical characteristics and differ only in the types of geographical areas for which the summarized data items are presented. STF 1D provides summaries for state or state equivalent, congressional district (as constituted for the 98th Congress), county or county equivalent, places of 10,000 or more people, and minor civil divisions (MCD) or census county divisions (CCD). Housing items tabulated include occupancy/vacancy status, tenure, contract rent, value, condominium status, number of rooms, and plumbing facilities. Population items include demographic information such as age, sex, race, marital status, Spanish origin, household relationship, and household type. Selected variables from the most recent ACS Community Survey (Released 2023) aggregated by Community Area. Additional years will be added as they become available. The underlying algorithm to create the dataset calculates the % of a census tract that falls within the boundaries of a given community area. Given that census tracts and community area boundaries are not aligned, these figures should be considered an estimate.
