    Description

    Description

    Description

    Description

The purpose of this project was to create an assessment and reporting methodology for estuary health in Atlantic Canada. Project partners were based in the Outer Bay of Fundy, Inner Bay of Fundy, southern shore of Nova Scotia, northwestern Northumberland Strait, eastern Northumberland Strait and western Newfoundland, addressing estuary health in a uniform manner throughout the Atlantic region. The water quality data collected in the estuaries included nitrates and chlorophyll a. Sediments were analyzed for contaminants including pesticides; and a series of samples were taken and analyzed for fecal coliform bacteria. Secchi depths were measured at all monitoring sites and a depth profile of dissolved oxygen and salinity was completed each season to establish water quality stratification.

Approximately every two weeks from late May to early October, PCRA volunteers use portable water quality sensors to measure temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH and conductivity at 2 locations on each river, one just above the head of tide and one in the upper watershed. The program has been conducted every year since 2014 so we have 7 years of data collected and plan to continue the program in 2021. The data collected is compiled and summarized each year and the results compared to previous year’s results and Canadian Water Quality Objectives for the protection of fish and aquatic life. The PCRA acknowledges the technical and financial support provided by the Atlantic Water Network at St. Mary’s University and the NS Salmon Association's Adopt a Stream program which make it possible to conduct this program.

A YSI Pro-DSS and Pro Plus are used to collect the water's physical characteristics in situ. The probe's pH and conductivity are calibrated monthly, while DO% is calibrated once before each field day, and twice-more throughout the sample collection. All chemical samples are sent to an accredited laboratory for analysis, where samples are also subject to the lab's QAQC. Samples are held on ice until delivery to the lab - within 24 hours of collection.
    Description

The Petite Riviere Water Quality Program has added this secondary complementary program to monitor water quality within the headwaters of Millipsigate Lake, Hebb Lake, and Minamkeak Lake, and within each of the lakes, to assess and mitigate harm to the environment and aquatic organisms within the watershed. This program is funded by the Habitat Stewardship Program.
