This dataset provides information about the median family income in Austin (SD23 measure EOA.B.6). Median family income (MFI) is calculated annually by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to help set income limits that determine eligibility for assisted housing programs. This dataset includes the MFI calculated by HUD for the Austin-Round Rock MSA and the United States. For years prior to FY 2016, HUD reported on the Austin-Round Rock-San Marcos MSA instead of the Austin-Round Rock MSA. This information is important in understanding economic and affordability trends in Austin. Additionally, the Housing and Planning Department uses median family income data in setting income limits for affordable housing programs in Austin. Austin loves to tout its outdoor spaces (Figure 1), often using it to attract tourists and permanent residents (City of Austin, 2020). The Texas city has also ranked high in studies measuring the health of residents, in part due to its green spaces, including parks, greenbelts, and other public open spaces (White, 2021). But how equitable is proximity to these outdoor recreation areas among the neighborhoods of Austin? According to the World Health Organization (2016), being close to an outdoor space has been linked to many health benefits, especially among “economically deprived communities, children, pregnant women and senior citizens” (p. 40). Is there a correlation between proximity to green space and income among the 103 neighborhood reporting areas in Austin, Texas? In order to perform this analysis, I created a hexagonal tessellation at both one square mile and one-half square mile. Then, I used census block group income data from the 2018 American Community Survey 5-year estimate to calculate each hexagon’s median income. Proximity was be measured by determining the total area of green spaces available within a ten-minute walking distance of each polygon boundary (Nesbitt, 2018). At this point, I ran the analysis on Austin’s neighborhood reporting areas and made a bivariate analysis to determine the correlation between the two pieces of information.
