Date of Publication: 04/02/2019Name of Person Responsible: Alan HalterDate to be removed/updated: TBDOn October 22, 2007 the City of Austin contracted a sample tree inventory across 16 transit corridors for a total of 115 street lane miles, 24 park locations, and 64 neighborhood planning areas. The inventory took place between the fall of 2007 and spring of 2008 sampling 14,925 total trees, 9,943 vacant planting sites in street rights-of-ways (ROW), and 952 vacant planting areas in parkland. This extrapolates to 155,762 street trees, 288,761 park trees, and 190,940 vacant ROW planting spaces. This extrapolation is based on the total number of street lane miles and developed parkland acreage for 2008. Note, for the park tree inventory portion, only developed parkland was inventoried. Passive use parkland, such as preserves and natural areas, was not inventoried.Data collected in the inventory included the following:GPS locations of treesSpecies name in Latin and common formTree trunk diameter (DBH) in inchesGeneral health assessmentMaintenance recommendation.Findings were summarized in a report that can be accessed here.

The USDA Forest Service and Texas A&M Forest Service released new 2024 data from Urban Forest Inventory and Analysis (Urban FIA), the nation’s tree census for cities. Urban FIA estimates the overall value of our urban forests by collecting scientific data from over 200 sample plots across Austin. The FIA program, which has monitored the nation’s forests since the 1930s, expanded in 2014 to include urban areas. Austin was the first city to receive this program; Urban FIA now extends to over 40 cities nationwide. Wrapping up the latest 2024 data collection effort represented the program’s first decennial remeasurement. Here are some key findings.
