    The report is a quarterly report with a consistent and regular assessment of crop prospects for major field crops, forecasts of area, yield and production and a summary of seasonal conditions on a state by state basis.

    Key issues
    • Prospects for total winter crop production in Australia fell slightly during spring but there was significant regional variation. Crop prospects improved significantly in Western Australia but declined significantly in New South Wales and Queensland. • Harvest is underway in many regions but progress has been slowed by rainfall events. According to the latest rainfall outlook, issued by the Bureau of Meteorology on 30 November 2017 December rainfall is likely to be higher than average in south-east cropping regions. • Total winter crop production is forecast to decrease by 41 per cent in 2017-18 to 34.9 million tonnes, largely reflecting an expected fall in average yields from the exceptionally high yields of 2016-17. This is a downward revision of 4 per cent from the ABARES forecast published in the September 2017 edition of Australian crop report. This forecast production is 2 per cent below the 10-year average to 2015-16. • Production is forecast to fall in 2017-18 for the three major crops: wheat by 42 per cent to 20.3 million tonnes, barley by 40 per cent to 8.0 million tonnes and canola by 31 per cent to 2.9 million tonnes. • Area planted to summer crops is forecast to increase by 13 per cent to 1.5 million hectares in 2017-18, which reflects a more favourable opening to the summer crop season than in 2016-17 for grain sorghum. Area planted to grain sorghum is forecast to rise while area planted to cotton and rice is forecast to fall. Total summer crop production is forecast to increase by 23 per cent to around 4.8 million tonnes.

    This dataset has been superseded. An updated version of this dataset is available from the ABARES website.

    This dataset is the first national compilation of catchment scale commodity data for Australia (CLUMC), current as at September 2017. It has been compiled from vector land use datasets collected as part of state and territory mapping programs through the Australian Collaborative Land Use and Management Program (ACLUMP). It complements the Catchment Scale Land Use of Australia - Update September 2017 dataset (ABARES 2017). Agricultural commodities are assigned to the Australian Land Use and Management (ALUM) Classification version 8 (ABARES 2016) classes based on; perceived intervention to the landscape, growing conditions and management, the intended use of the commodity, consistency with national and international reporting frameworks and standards, such as National Plantation Inventory, industry guidelines, Australian Bureau of Statistics, harmonised trade codes and ABARES commodity reports, where possible.

    Commodities data were produced as part of catchment scale land use mapping and primarily uses fine-scale satellite data and information collected in the field (ABARES 2011, 2015). Field validation was critical for mapping commodities. The date of mapping (2003 to 2017) and scale of mapping (1:5 000 to 1:250 000) vary, reflecting the source data, capture date and scale.

    Jurisdictions captured commodity data (where possible) for those areas most recently mapped in the Catchment scale land use of Australia - Update September 2017 (ABARES 2017) with a focus on horticultural and intensive animal industries. Other commodities which are tertiary classes of the ALUM classification (such as sugar cane, cotton, rice, olives and grapes) have been mapped by jurisdictions for some time and are included in this dataset. Agricultural commodity level mapping is available for all of the Northern Territory, and is likely to be complete for the following commodities nationally:

    • Crops - rice, sugar cane, cotton
    • Fruit - bananas (except Southern Queensland), avocados, mangoes, olives, grapes
    • Nuts - macadamias
    • Livestock - dairy cattle, pigs, poultry, horse studs, aquaculture.

    Commodity information is selected from an agreed list of commodity names developed by ACLUMP partners. A commodity may be applied to one or many land use codes. For example the commodity 'wheat' is applied to class 3.3.1, 'Cropping' or 4.4.1, 'Irrigated cropping', while 'cattle' may be applied to any land use where cattle are observed including 2.1.0 'Grazing native vegetation', 3.2.0 'Grazing modified pastures', 4.2.0 'Grazing irrigated modified pastures', 5.2.2 'Feedlots' etc.

    The commodity description is intended to add information to the catchment scale land use map which is not otherwise recorded in the ALUM Classification. Where there are several suitable commodity descriptions mappers are encouraged to record the most detailed description. For example when cattle breeds are known to be for milk production mappers would apply the commodity description 'cattle dairy' rather than just 'cattle'.

    Summer rainfall has improved prospects for Australia's 2014-15 summer crop after largely unfavourable seasonal conditions in spring.

    2014-15 summer crop production • Total Australian summer crop production is forecast to remain largely unchanged at around 3.7 million tonnes in 2014-15. • While the planted area is forecast to be lower than in 2013-14, yields are expected to be higher. • However, the forecast area planted to summer crops has been revised up from the forecast published in the December 2014 edition of the Australian crop report.
    • Grain sorghum is forecast to rise by around two-thirds to 1.8 million tonnes in 2014-15. • In contrast, cotton production is forecast to fall by 47 per cent to 470 000 tonnes of cotton lint and around 665 000 tonnes of cottonseed. • Rice production is forecast to decline by 18 per cent in 2014-15 to around 684 000 tonnes. 2014-15 winter crop production • Total Australian winter crop production is estimated to have fallen by 13 per cent in 2014-15 to 38.2 million tonnes, reflecting estimated lower production in all the major producing states as a result of a decline in yields from the high yields in 2013-14. • Production was still higher in 2014-15 than the 10-year average to 2013-14, by 7 per cent. • Wheat production is estimated to have fallen by 12 per cent to 23.6 million tonnes. • Barley production is estimated to have fallen by 18 per cent to 8 million tonnes. • Canola production is estimated to have declined by 10 per cent to 3.4 million tonnes.

    Rice farms in the Murray-Darling Basin presents key farm performance measures for irrigated rice growing farms in the Basin, including data on water trading and use of irrigation technologies, with an emphasis on results from 2012-13 to 2014-15. \r \r ABARES has conducted surveys of irrigation farms in selected industries and regions in the Murray-Darling Basin since 2006-07. The Murray-Darling Basin Authority (MDBA) funded this latest survey. \r \r This report focused on rice growing farms in the southern Murray-Darling Basin, where almost all of Australia's rice is produced. \r \r After 100 per cent closing water allocations in 2012-13, there were falls in allocations in 2013-14 and particularly in 2014-15. Average farm cash incomes in 2014-15 fell by around 28 per cent to around $132 000. The average rate of return was 1.7 per cent, higher than the average for all survey years of 1.3 per cent. \r \r All rice growers used flood irrigation because of the need to apply large volumes of water to rice crops at high delivery rates. \r \r In most survey years, a majority of rice farms did not buy or sell irrigation water. Of those farms that did trade water, there were more sellers than buyers of water. On average, sellers of water recorded higher rates of return on capital than either buyers or those not trading water.

    In this edition of the Australian crop report, ABARES will release its first set of forecasts of winter crop production in 2017-18 and estimates of summer crop production in 2016-17.

    Key issues • The start of the 2017-18 winter crop season was mixed. Autumn rainfall was generally favourable in cropping regions in the eastern states (excluding South Australia), which resulted in favourable levels of soil moisture in these regions. In most cropping regions in Western Australia and some key cropping regions in South Australia, autumn rainfall was below average, which led to unfavourable planting conditions during autumn and early winter in these regions. • Below average winter rainfall is likely in most major cropping regions, according to the latest three-month rainfall outlook (June to August) issued by the Bureau of Meteorology on 25 May 2017. • The total area planted to winter crops is forecast to fall by around 1 per cent in 2017-18 to 22.5 million hectares. Area planted to cereal crops is expected to decrease but the area planted to canola, chickpeas and lentils is forecast to increase. Area planted to canola is forecast to rise in all major producing states, largely reflecting favourable expected returns compared with wheat, oats and barley. • Total winter crop production is forecast to decrease by 33 per cent in 2017-18 to 40.1 million tonnes, which largely reflects an assumed fall in average yields from the exceptionally high yields of 2016-17. • Total Australian summer crop production is estimated to have increased by 5 per cent in 2016-17 to 4 million tonnes because of large increases in cotton and rice production.
