    Description

Global demand for organic produce is rising substantially thanks to increasing health concerns about food. Industry-wide revenue is expected to expand at an average annualised 8.4% over the past five years, to total $2.8 billion in 2023-24. This trend includes anticipated growth of 9.0% in the current year, with an increase in demand from food product manufacturing and a rise in health consciousness boosting overall domestic demand for organic food.Australia has the largest area of certified organic farmland in the world, covering approximately 35.6 million hectares. Most of this land is extensive rangelands for organic cattle farming. The industry mainly consists of small operators, which makes it difficult to keep produce quantity and quality consistent. The industry remains highly fragmented, and organic farming techniques aren't as efficient as conventional farming. Lower annual rainfall over the three years through 2019-20 affected organic farmers, from beef and dairy farmers to fruit and vegetable growers. The industry has grown strongly as organic produce consumption becomes increasingly mainstream. Supermarkets are selling an increasing number of organic products to attract health-conscious consumers. Profit margins are typically higher for organic farmers than for conventional farmers. The industry's higher profit margins are thanks to the price premium consumers are willing to pay for organic produce, which is generally considered superior to conventionally farmed produce. The industry is on track to continue expanding strongly. Rising demands in domestic and export markets are poised to drive industry revenue growth. Continued growth in disposable incomes is set to bolster consumer demand. Supermarket chains are going to increasingly stock organic products. Industry revenue is forecast to hike at an annualised 10.4% over the five years through 2028-29, to total $4.7 billion. While some supply issues may constrain industry expansion, farmers' increased use of technology and innovation in products and processes are poised to boost organic production.

    Description

The Organic Crop Farming industry has benefited from strong growth in consumer demand for organic food. Once considered an alternative food eaten only by a minority of the population, organic produce has become increasingly common in consumer diets and retail stores. Organic fruits and vegetables are often perceived to be healthier than their conventionally farmed counterparts thanks to the absence of synthetic chemicals, genetic modification, pesticides and fertilisers in their production. Rising health consciousness and greater public concern regarding the effects of conventional farming on the environment have driven demand for organic fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts and herbs. Consumers are increasingly willing to pay a premium for organic produce. Industry revenue is expected to have soared at an annualised 13.9% over the five years through 2024-25, to $2.7 billion. Rising consumer demand and strong profitability compared with conventional farming have encouraged existing farmers to expand production by acquiring smaller farms. These trends have also supported growth in industry enterprise numbers. Intensifying price competition among larger farms has constrained prices, slightly limiting industrywide revenue growth. Although weaker discretionary income levels have constrained consumer demand, industry revenue is on track to expand 15.7% in 2024-25 as more consumers purchase organic produce. Consumer demand for organic produce is projected to continue increasing, with rising health consciousness and disposable incomes supporting robust industry growth. High demand for organic beef in export markets is projected to boost demand for organic feedstock, bolstering revenue growth. However, price competition is forecast to intensify as farmers expand and compete for supply contracts with supermarkets. This trend might limit industry growth. Industry revenue is forecast to shoot up at an annualised 17.1% over the five years through 2029-30, to $6.0 billion.

    Description

The Organic Grocery Stores industry has encountered challenging trading conditions in the past few years, leading to a decline in revenue and profit margins. Organic grocers experienced negative demand shocks and sharp revenue contractions in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic between 2019-2020 and 2021-2022, with many consumers turning to major supermarkets for their shopping needs rather than organic grocers. Revenue rebounded in 2022-2023 as normal trading conditions resumed. However, mounting cost-of-living pressures have led households to opt for less expensive substitutes, dragging down revenue once again over the two years through 2024-25. Organic grocery stores have also battled rising input costs and operating expenses while facing stiff competition from supermarkets and online retailers. Many consumers now prefer shopping online for its convenience. These factors have not only hampered revenue but have also put substantial downwards pressure on profit, forcing many organic grocery stores to revise their labour strategies. Industry revenue is expected to contract at an annualised rate of 2.9% over the five years through 2024-25, to $276.5 million. This includes a 1.6% drop in the current year, as cost-of-living pressures continue to dampen downstream demand for organic products. The Organic Grocery Stores industry is set to witness an upturn over the coming years. Growing demand for groceries underpins this positive outlook, largely attributable to population growth and an accompanying hike in grocery expenditures. An increase in household discretionary income as cost-of-living pressures subside will also boost demand for organic products. Revenue growth will spark a flurry of new entrants, creating jobs across the Organic Grocery Stores industry. Even so, organic grocers will face heightened competition from both internal and external competitors. Striking a balance between remaining competitive, maintaining profitability and managing costs from upstream suppliers will be critical to success. Mounting public awareness of environmental issues and the health benefits of organic products will provide added leverage for revenue growth. Overall, industry revenue is expected to expand at an annualised rate of 3.8% through the end of 2029-30, to $332.6 million.

    Description

The Australian organic whey protein market, while a segment of a larger global industry exhibiting a 4.26% CAGR, presents unique opportunities and challenges. The market's size in 2025 is estimated at $50 million AUD, based on global market trends and considering Australia's strong health and wellness sector. Key drivers include increasing consumer awareness of the health benefits of protein, particularly organic and sustainably sourced options, coupled with rising participation in fitness activities and a growing preference for clean-label products. Trends indicate a shift towards premium, specialized formulations, including hydrolyzed whey protein for enhanced absorption and blends incorporating other organic ingredients for enhanced nutritional value. While the market faces restraints like the higher cost of organic certification and sourcing compared to conventional whey protein, the rising demand for premium, ethically produced food and supplements is counteracting these limitations. The market is segmented by product type (whey protein concentrates, isolates, hydrolyzed) and application (sports nutrition, infant formula, functional foods). Major players are international brands with established distribution networks alongside smaller, locally focused companies emphasizing sustainability and organic certification. The forecast period (2025-2033) suggests continued growth, driven by increasing consumer demand for premium, health-conscious products and the expanding popularity of online retail channels.
