    Description

Trading conditions have been mixed for the Domestic Airlines industry over the past five years. Government restrictions to combat the pandemic significantly curtailed air travel volumes over the two years through 2020-21, and industry revenue plunged accordingly. Returning to growth in 2021-22, revenue has rapidly recovered ever since to reach close to pre-pandemic levels. Overall, industry revenue is expected to have grown at an annualised 4.7% over the five years through 2024-25 to $17.0 billion. This includes anticipated revenue growth of 0.5% in 2024-25. The COVID-19 pandemic wiped out domestic airlines’ profit margins, causing the industry to suffer losses over the three years through 2021-22. A strong recovery in domestic air travel, combined with capacity constraints, has returned the industry to profitability, but weak consumer confidence over the two years through 2024-25 has started to stall revenue growth. High inflation and rising interest rates have hit consumer confidence, prompting customers to increasingly choose budget airlines over full-fare flights and stifling growth in domestic air travel over the two years through 2024-25. With low-cost carrier Bonza exiting the industry in April 2024 and Rex entering voluntary administration in July 2024, price competition is expected to weaken. However, the Federal Government has stepped in to ensure the survival of Rex, which continues to operate regional flights and is looking to secure a buyer to continue operating. Nonetheless, lower jet fuel prices and easing travel demand have led to steep falls in ticket prices, limiting industrywide revenue growth in 2024-25. Passenger numbers are set to steadily tick upwards as domestic tourism and international travel to Australia strengthen over the coming years, driving the industry's expansion. Issues with competition following Bonza’s exit and the temporary limited operations of Rex will also support ticket prices, helping to boost margins and revenue growth. However, unpredictable geopolitical tensions in oil-rich nations have the potential to hinder the industry's recovery, similarly to how sanctions imposed on Russian oil have sustained elevated oil prices, placing strong upwards pressure on domestic airlines' purchase costs and limiting their profit margins. Industry revenue is forecast to increase at an annualised 2.9% over the five years through 2029-30 to $19.6 billion.

    Description

The pandemic decimated the International Airlines industry, but it rebounded rapidly over the two years through 2022-23 after international and state borders reopened. Notwithstanding air freight transport, the industry's services were essentially non-existent while international borders were shut. Weakening global economic conditions and a cost-of-living crisis domestically disrupted the industry’s recovery in 2023-24, but a strong rebound in Chinese tourist numbers is expected to boost growth in 2024-25. Overall, the industry has seen mild growth off a low base year in 2019-20, with revenue set to climb by an annualised 2.4% over the five years through 2024-25, to reach $36.0 billion. The current year is anticipated to bring strong revenue growth for the industry, at 6.9%, as a new Chinese carrier enters the market and easing diplomatic tensions boost Chinese tourist numbers. Like revenue, the pandemic also caused average profit margins to plummet, with international airlines making significant losses while heavy restrictions on international air travel were in place. International airlines incur high fixed costs, which surged as a share of revenue amid dismal demand conditions. In the aftermath of two years of losses at the height of the pandemic, airlines have been careful about how quickly they’ve rebuilt their capacity, with many airlines being slow to restart pre-pandemic routes. This kept capacity use above long-term averages over the two years through 2023-24, despite passenger numbers being below pre-pandemic levels. This strategy means that airfares have been elevated over the three years through 2024-25, supporting margins, which have recovered to pre-pandemic levels in the current year. Revenue for the International Airlines industry is projected to rise at an annualised 1.4% through the end of 2029-30 to reach $38.6 billion. International travel has strong underlying demand and has traditionally recovered quickly after periods of shock-driven decline. Nonetheless, persistent weakness in global and domestic consumer sentiment and economic conditions is forecast to limit growth. The industry faces risks of even weaker conditions depending on the developing US tariff situation. Global recessions, particularly in China, threaten to significantly decrease inbound tourist numbers below the current forecasts.

The market is experiencing significant growth, driven by the increasing air passenger traffic worldwide. This trend is fueled by the rising preference for affordable travel options, making LCCs an attractive choice for price-sensitive consumers. However, this market is not without challenges. Operating expenses for LCC companies continue to rise, putting pressure on their profitability. The need to maintain low fares while managing these costs presents a significant challenge. Description

Airfreight transporters have faced a turbulent operating environment in recent years. While the COVID-19 pandemic largely grounded the wider aviation sector, the Air Freight Services industry soared above the clouds. Airfreight volumes transported by airlines dropped while international borders were closed, due to limited capacity in the cargo holds of passenger flights. However, global supply chain disruptions pushed airfreight prices to record levels, more than offsetting weaker tonnage volumes. As global supply chain disruptions eased and borders reopened, over the two years through 2023-24, airfreight prices have started to normalise, while volumes continue to be below pre-pandemic levels. Overall, industry revenue is expected to drop at an annualised 5.8% over the five years through 2023-24, to $4.6 billion. This includes an anticipated 24.6% crash in 2023-24, as airfreight prices fall back down to earth. Rising freight rates and plummeting fuel costs at the onset of the pandemic boosted industry profitability, which hit its highest levels in well over a decade in 2021-22. However, over the three years through 2023-24, profit margins are being squeezed by sustained weakness in airfreight volumes, falling airfreight prices as well as elevated fuel costs since the beginning of the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Fuel prices are expected to remain elevated, which will continue to weigh on profit margins over the next five years. Airfreight supply will continue to normalise over the coming years as airlines continue to restore passenger capacity and prices continue to drop back to pre-pandemic levels. Strong demand for Australian agricultural produce and continued growth among online retailers are set to push up demand for airfreight transport. Normalising passenger flight numbers will result in airfreight prices continuing to fall from their dizzying heights. Dropping prices are on track to offset increasing tonnage over the next couple of years, causing industry revenue to fall slightly over the period. As a result, Air Freight Services industry revenue is forecast to fall at an annualised 0.4% over the five years through 2028-29, to reach $4.5 billion.
