    Description

Cinema operators have faced disruption in recent years. Cinema revenue has fluctuated amid shifts in consumer discretionary income and external shocks. While the post-pandemic recovery spurred strong audience returns, recent declines in spending, combined with events like the 2023 Hollywood Writers Guild strike, have undermined box office performance and cinema attendance. Meanwhile, fierce competition from SVOD platforms has eroded traditional revenue streams. Overall, industry revenue has grown at an annualised rate of 9.4% over the past five years, largely thanks to the post-pandemic rebound, and is expected to total $1.39 billion in 2025-26. Revenue is forecast to drop by an estimated 1.5% in 2025-26. Cinemas increasingly rely on premium offerings like luxury seating and upscale food options for a growing share of revenue. Despite these enhancements, profit margins remain below pre-pandemic levels, with attendance still challenged by streaming competition and past shutdowns. While earnings are set to improve modestly through 2025-26, much of this growth simply reflects recovery from previous closures, leaving underlying profitability constrained and vulnerable to market shifts. Major chains like Event Cinemas' V-Max, Village Roadshow’s Gold Class and Hoyts’ LUX invest in upscale experiences featuring advanced audiovisual systems and enhanced seating that command higher ticket prices and boost per-visit spending. This strategy is especially attractive to people between the ages of 18 and 49, who tend to have higher disposable incomes than other demographic groups. Looking ahead, Australian cinema operators are set to benefit from stabilising inflation, a robust slate of family film releases (alongside other major blockbusters like Avatar) and a strategic focus on premium in-theatre experiences. While competition from streaming platforms remains intense, investments in luxury seating, upgraded audiovisual technology and exclusive events will drive audience engagement. Industry revenue is forecast to expand modestly, with improved consumer spending and strong box office titles supporting gradual growth over the outlook period. This combination of factors is expected to culminate in annualised growth of 0.7% through the end of 2030-31, reaching $1.44 billion.

    Description

In 2024, the proportion of Australians attending the cinema at least once per year was around ** percent. Historically, cinema attendance in Australia has been around the ** percent mark. In 2020 and 2021, the attendance rates dropped drastically due to mandatory closures of cinemas during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, they have recovered in recent years. Ticket prices Steady attendance in recent years can be attributed, at least in part, to there only having been small fluctuations in ticket prices. In 2021, the average price of a cinema ticket was ***** Australian dollars; an increase of one dollar from the previous year. Overall, average prices have increased by less than **** dollars since 2007. Maximum ticket prices have seen similarly small fluctuations across the same time frame. The maximum price in both 2017 and 2018 (as well as 2013 and 2014) was ** Australian dollars. In other years, and despite a 2011 peak of ***** Australian dollars, prices settled between ** and ** dollars. Cinemas An additional factor that has helped cinema attendance and keeping ticket prices low is the dominance of independently owned cinema screens in Australia. In 2021, there were a total of *** screens that were independently owned in the country. By comparison, the largest chain by number of screens, Event Cinemas, owned *** and Hoyts owned ***. Of course, cinemas would not attract visitors without films to go and see. The enduring popularity in recent years of Marvel films, amongst others, has also driven cinema attendance. In 2021, two of the most successful films at the box office were Marvel productions; Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, which took total box office revenue in Australia of **** million U.S. dollars, and Black Wodow, which took **** million U.S. dollars.

    Description

This is the public repository for the Kinomatics Australian Film Production Dataset, a large, curated dataset describing Australian feature film production and personnel from 1975 to 2022. Here, we briefly describe the contents of this repository, which are explained in more detail in the dataset's technical documentation.

We have also written a research data paper to accompany the dataset, which focuses less on the technical details and more on motivating the dataset itself and the decisions we made in deciding its scope and coverage. This data paper is published in the open access Research Data Journal for the Humanities and Social Sciences and can be viewed at https://doi.org/10.1163/24523666-bja10048.

    Repository contents

    Data files

There are two main data files that form this dataset. The first is films.csv, a table where each row corresponds to a unique film in the dataset, and the columns contain variables describing those films.

The second is roles.csv, a table where each row corresponds to an instance of a person filling a role on a film, and the columns contain variables describing that role (including identifiers for the film and the person).

    Documentation

The technical documentation of the dataset is presented in the technical_documentation.pdf file. Here, we provide a detailed account of the data collection, validation and preparation processes. We also provide tables describing each column in each of the data files.

    Change log

The file changelog.pdf documents changes between released versions of the dataset.

    Issues

For any issues related to the dataset or this repository, please contact either of the lead authors Pete Jones (pete@petejon.es) or Deb Verhoeven (deb.verhoeven@ualberta.ca) and let us know what the problem is and how we can fix it.

Walt Disney and Warner Brothers had around a similar share apiece, whereas Roadshow and Fox held a comparatively small market share.  The cinema market in Australia  The Australian cinema market is stable, enjoying stable attendance numbers prior to the COVID-19 pandemic and comparatively steady growth in ticket prices. This can be attributed, at least in part, to the majority of Australian cinema screens being independently owned, which helps to prevent corporate dominance; companies such as Hoyts and Event cinemas have to keep ticket prices mostly in line with independently owned screens in order to remain competitive.  Global and regional context  The Australian box office market is within the ten largest markets globally, although it attracts a revenue of around one-tenth of the Chinese market. In terms of cinema screens, the Asia Pacific region has the largest number of cinema screens, around ** thousand of which are digital 3D screens, making it the leading global region for digital 3D cinema screens by a significant margin.

Insight into the entertainment market of Australia

During the COVID-19 lockdown, consumers in Australia had significantly increased their screen time by watching films and series at home. This was one of the reasons for a sudden plunge in the value of the filmed entertainment market in Australia in 2020. However, it was estimated that the Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of the film entertainment market will increase by more than *** percent between 2019 and 2024. This will, in turn, create a boom for the entertainment and media industry of Australia as a result of increased spending on entertainment subscriptions by adults in Australia.

    Film trends in Australia

In 2021, nearly ** films were released in Australia. Out of these, Godzilla vs. Kong was the highest grossing film. Moreover, filmmakers and movie theaters had worked in close liaison with Roadshow/Warner Brothers to release movies, making it the most prominent film distributor in Australia.

    Description

The Motion Picture and Video Production industry has been volatile over the past five years. The industry experienced a pandemic-driven surge but now grapples with heightened volatility sparked by changing policies and postponed projects. In 2021, favourable settings and border stability fuelled record activity, straining local resources and elevating wages. Subsequent shifts, including the lapse of COVID-era benefits and the disruptive 2023-24 US writers’ strike, contributed to stalled shoots and shrinking budgets. Uncertainty over the new 30.0% Location Offset and delayed streamer obligations also dampened investor confidence, leading to the suspension of many productions. This downturn has raised concerns about long-term sustainability and ongoing funding for Australian screen content. Industry revenue is expected to contract at an annualised 3.4% through to 2025-26, falling to $3.3 billion, including a decline of 1.1% in 2025-26. The Australian Motion Picture and Video Production industry depends heavily on commissions from film studios, TV networks and advertising agencies. Rising demand for fresh content, especially from free-to-air broadcasters and streaming platforms like Stan, has underpinned recent demand. Profitability remains moderate as established producers enjoy easier access to finance, while newer players often struggle to secure deals. Approvals frequently hinge on pre-sales agreements, clear market interest and well-structured production plans. Australian production companies face narrower budgets and heightened global competition over the coming years, with locations like Greece, Malta and the Canary Islands offering rebate schemes surpassing Australia’s current rate. Technology advancement is expected to propel the industry, with current examples including Docklands Studios Melbourne’s expanded LED stages and advanced post-production work from companies like Rising Sun Pictures, which attract more production work. However, progress on SVOD quotas remains stalled, limiting opportunities for local producers to secure more stable revenue. Some producers, like Eureka Studios, are seeking international partners like Fremantle to refine intellectual property development and expand distribution. Combined, these pressures and collaborations signal a cautious outlook. Overall, revenue is forecast to climb to $3.5 billion at an annualised 0.9% through the end of 2030-31.
