This datasets presents the South Australian suburb boundaries as of August 2018. Suburbs and Localities (or Rural suburbs) are defined areas of the State established for addressing purposes. The base data used for the capture is the cadastre. The Suburbs layer is a data set that reflects the official boundaries of addressable localities in South Australia as defined by the Geographical Names Act, 1991. The polygons are based on the existing cadastral, topographic or road centerline data that defines the underlying features that boundaries follow. The Suburb Boundaries in the urban and rural areas are updated when required through notification in the Government Gazette or spatial improvement of the cadastre. The capturing started 1990 and is ongoing. The Suburb boundary dataset is currently 100% complete for the state and complies with government classification standards. Description

The digital Suburb/Locality Boundaries and their legal identifiers have been derived from the cadastre data from each Australian state and territory jurisdiction and are available below

Suburb/Locality Boundaries are part of the PSMA Administrative Boundaries dataset built and maintained by PSMA Australia, using authoritative government data, sourced from the state and territory government mapping agencies and land registries of Australia as well as from the Australian Electoral Commission and Australian Bureau of Statistics.

The full PSMA Administrative Boundaries dataset contains boundaries in seven themes: Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) boundaries, electoral boundaries, state and territory boundaries, local government areas, suburbs/localities, wards and town points.

As at November 2019, users have the option to download datasets with feature coordinates referencing the new Geocentric Datum of Australia 2020 (GDA2020) in addition to datasets on the GDA94 datum.

For GDA2020 datasets, the name of the zip folder and the root folder (once extracted) include a reference to GDA2020. For GDA94 datasets, the zip and root folder names do not contain the datum name (i.e. they remain the same as previous releases).

For example, the zip and root folder for Administrative Boundaries downloaded in GDA2020 for November 2019 looks like this:

      • NOV19_AdminBounds_ESRIShapefileorDBFfile_GDA2020; or
      • NOV19_AdminBounds_MapInfoTABFormat_GDA2020

The zip and root folder for Administrative Boundaries in GDA94 for November 2019 looks like this:

      • NOV19_AdminBounds_ESRIShapefileorDBFfile; or
      • NOV19_AdminBounds_MapInfoTABFormat

Irrespective of the datum chosen, files within the respective folder use exactly the same naming structures.

    Description

This layer provide some of the more commonly used variables from the General Community Profile information from the Australian Bureau of Statistics 2021 census. Data is available for Country, Greater Capital City Statistical Area (GCCSA), Local Government Area (LGA), Statistical Area Level 1 (SA1) and 2 (SA2), and Suburb and Localities (SAL) boundaries.

The General Community Profile contains a series of tables showing the characteristics of persons, families and dwellings in a selected geographic area. The data is based on place of usual residence (that is, where people usually live, rather than where they were counted on Census night). Community Profiles are excellent tools for researching, planning and analysing geographic areas for a number of social, economic and demographic characteristics.

Please note that there are data assumptions that should be considered when analysing the ABS Census data. These are detailed within the Census documents referenced above. These include:

Registered Marital Status In December 2017, amendments to the Marriage Act 1961 came into effect enabling marriage equality for all couples. For 2021, registered marriages include all couples. Core Activity Need for Assistance Measures the number of people with a profound or severe core activity limitation. People with a profound or severe core activity limitation are those needing assistance in their day to day lives in one or more of the three core activity areas of self-care, mobility and communication because of a long-term health condition (lasting six months or more), a disability (lasting six months or more), or old age. Number of Motor Vehicles Excludes motorbikes, motor scooters and heavy vehicles.

    Statistical Area Level 1 (SA1)

Statistical Areas Level 1 (SA1s) are designed to maximise the geographic detail available for Census of Population and Housing data while maintaining confidentiality.

SA1s are built from whole Mesh Blocks and have a population between 200 and 800 people. In remote and regional areas they generally have smaller populations than those in urban areas. SA1s are designed to represent Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities as accurately as possible, particularly in remote areas.

    Using SA1s with Census data

Use SA1s to see how Census characteristics vary at a neighbourhood scale within larger areas such as Suburbs or Local Government Areas.

    Description

The feature names data refers to the specific official, commercial or colloquial name used to refer to a particular feature or collective group of features in the ACT. A number of feature names have been formally determined as public place names, for example divisions (suburbs) and some parks, however this does not apply to features such as commercial buildings and schools. The ACT Government is responsible for the naming of public places in the ACT (nomenclature). For further information about Place Names or to search for a specific street or division (suburb), please refer to the Place Names.

    Description

The digital Local Government Areas and their legal identifiers have been derived from the cadastre data from each Australian state and territory jurisdiction and are available below.

Local Government Areas are part of the PSMA Administrative Boundaries dataset built and maintained by PSMA Australia, using authoritative government data, sourced from the state and territory government mapping agencies and land registries of Australia as well as from the Australian Electoral Commission and Australian Bureau of Statistics.

    Description

Smart Cities, Smart Liverpool, Smart Pedestrian Project

Thousands of people walk through the Liverpool city centre every day and, through the Smart Pedestrian Project, the paths they take will help shape the city’s future.

Liverpool City Council is counting pedestrian and vehicle movements around the city centre, collecting data from smart devices and camera-counting technology. The data is stripped of any identification and relayed and collected for analysis by researchers from the University of Wollongong.

Liverpool City Council now uses this data to inform planning decisions and respond to the rising number of residents and workers making their way around the city centre every day.

Liverpool City Council secured an Australian Government Smart Cities and Suburbs grant to jointly fund the project.

Liverpool City Council worked with IT Integration Company Meshed and the University of Wollongong to deliver the technology. Meshed supplied the Low Power Wide Area Network and developed a Wi-Fi smart device counter. The university developed the people and vehicle-counting technology and data analysis. The technology makes use of the city’s existing CCTV cameras to capture images. No images are transmitted over the network, so there is no risk to privacy.

This dataset lists the API endpoint URLs to retrieve data for the smart pedestrian project. A dashboard to view the data can be found at https://pavo.its.uow.edu.au/

Please read the API documentation as you need to provide the parameters to make any API calls.

An example has been provided below that lists all the visual sensors.

The API is divided in two sections: sensors, and readings (data gathered by sensors).

    Unless otherwise noted:

    * all datetimes are ISO formatted

    * all responses are JSON-formatted

The process included the extraction of the themed features, and the translation of the data into a schema created by the Built Environment & Exposure Section, National Location Information Branch, Geoscience Australia (GA). In 2023 further FME processing was completed where the dataset was address matched using the original address provided and compared with the Geocoded National Address File (G-NAF) data. If no address match occurred GIS specialists attempted to find a relevant corresponding G-NAF address to join to, where possible. Data dictionary

    Description

    Statistical Area Level 2 (SA2)

Statistical Areas Level 2 (SA2s) are medium-sized general purpose areas built up from whole Statistical Areas Level 1 (SA1s). They generally have a population between 3,000 and 25,000.

Their purpose is to represent a community that interacts together socially and economically. SA2s represent suburbs within cities and catchments of rural areas. In remote and regional areas, SA2s have smaller populations and cover a larger area than those in urban areas.

    Using SA2s with Census data

Use SA2s if you are analysing and comparing Census data at a suburb level in urban areas over Census years. A variety of other ABS data is released at the SA2 level for comparison.
