    Description

The prevalence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) among children in the United States has risen dramatically over the past two decades. In 2022, an estimated 32.2 out of every 1,000 8-year-old children were identified with ASD, marking a nearly fivefold increase from the rate of 6.7 per 1,000 children in 2000. This significant upward trend underscores the growing importance of understanding and addressing ASD in American society. Gender disparities in autism diagnosis The increase in ASD prevalence is not uniform across genders. From 2016 to 2019, male children were nearly four times more likely to be diagnosed with ASD than their female counterparts. Approximately 4.8 percent of boys aged 3 to 17 years had received an ASD diagnosis at some point in their lives, compared to only 1.3 percent of girls in the same age group. This substantial gender gap highlights the need for further research into potential biological and social factors influencing ASD diagnosis rates. Racial and ethnic variations in autism prevalence Autism prevalence also varies across racial and ethnic groups. Data from 2016 to 2019 show that non-Hispanic white children aged 3 to 17 years had an ASD prevalence of 2.9 percent, while around 3.5 percent of Hispanic children had ASD. While this statistic provides insight, it is essential to consider potential disparities in diagnosis and access to services among different racial and ethnic communities. Further research and targeted interventions may be necessary to ensure equitable identification and support for children with ASD across all populations.

    Description

Latest Monthly statistics on Learning Disabilities and Autism (LDA) from the Assuring Transformation collection and MHSDS collection.

This publication brings together the LDA data from the Assuring Transformation collection and the LDA service specific statistics from the Mental Health Statistics Data Set (MHSDS).

There are differences in the inpatient figures between the MHSDS and AT data sets and work is underway to better understand these. NHS Digital plans to publish additional monthly comparator data from this work in future publications. The MHSDS LDA data are currently labelled experimental as they are undergoing evaluation. Further information on the quality of these statistics is available in the Data Quality section of the main report. It is planned that the MHSDS will become the sole source of inpatient LDA data in the future, replacing Assuring Transformation.

There is a slight difference in scope between the two data collections. The MHSDS data is from providers based in England and includes care provided in England but may be commissioned outside England. Whereas the Assuring Transformation data are provided by English commissioners and healthcare will typically be provided in England but also includes data on care commissioned in England and provided elsewhere in the UK.

    The release comprises:

Assuring Transformation Publication: This statistical release published by NHS Digital makes available the most recent data relating to patients with learning disabilities and/or autistic spectrum disorder receiving inpatient care commissioned by the NHS in England.

MHSDS LDA Publication: This publication provides statistics relating to NHS funded secondary mental health, learning disabilities and autism services in England. These statistics are derived from submissions made using version 4.0 of the Mental Health Services Dataset (MHSDS). Prior to May 2018 the LDA service specific statistics were included in the main MHSDS publication.

Each publication consists of the following documents:

    • A report which presents England level analysis of key measures. • A monthly CSV file which presents key measures at England level. • A metadata file to accompany the CSV file, which provides contextual information for each measure. • An easy read version of both main reports highlighting key findings in an easy-to-understand way.

    Description

IntroductionCaregivers (primarily parents) of children with autism spectrum disorder (autism) report higher levels of stress, burn out and depression when compared to caregivers of children without autism. Interventions which incorporate animals have been efficacious in improving well-being for children with autism; however, investigating how caregivers are affected when their children are involved in such programs are a nascent field of inquiry. The objective of this pilot study is to characterize emotional strain and stress in caregivers of children with autism when their child attended a therapeutic horsemanship (TH) program.MethodsThirteen caregiver-child dyads completed the study. Utilizing a mixed methods approach, caregivers completed the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS-21) questionnaire prior to and upon completion of their child’s participation in TH for a 16-week semester. Semi-structured interviews were performed once during the semester and transcripts were analyzed using thematic analysis.ResultsWe observed caregivers experienced a statistically significant decrease (p=0.03) in their stress levels over a single semester of TH participation demonstrated by a reduction in DASS-21 stress subcategory (pre intervention mean 12.77 (SD = 9.95), post-intervention mean 8.62 (SD = 10.98). A total of five common themes were identified from the caregivers’ interview responses. Of these, four were associated with increased caregiver stress and strain: 1) navigating the care and management of their child’s diagnosis; 2) the lack of resources for their child with autism (CWA); 3) managing finances; and 4) caring for more than one child in their household. In contrast, the fifth theme captured a reduction in caregiver stress and strain secondary to their indirect involvement in TH.DiscussionThis pilot study successfully captured the indirect effects of a TH program in caregivers of children with autism. Integral to understanding caregiver stress, this study further characterizes how caregiver emotional stress and strain can be impacted as their child builds life skills in TH.

More information about this work can be found in the Accuracy and reliability section of this report. Fully detailed information on the quality and completeness of particular statistics in this release is not available due to the timescales involved in reviewing submissions and engaging with data providers. The information that has been obtained at the time of publication is made available in the Provider Feedback sections of the Data Quality Reports which accompany this release. Information gathered after publication is released in future editions of this publication series. More detailed information on the quality and completeness of these statistics and a summary of how these statistics may be interpreted is made available later in our Mental Health Bulletin: Annual Report publication series. All elements of this publication, other editions of this publication series, and related annual publication series’ can be found in the Related Links below.

Included for the first time in this release are statistics related to mental health crisis response teams. For this release these measures can be found in the separate MHSDS Monthly: Final December 2017 Community Crisis Response Data File. Included in this file are the number of new urgent and emergency referrals to crisis response teams and the number of new urgent and emergency referrals to crisis response teams with a face to face contact within the month. Following this release these measures will be incorporated into the main monthly data file.

Learning disabilities and autism services have been included since September 2014. From May 2018 Learning disabilities and autism service specific statistics will move to its own monthly publication and, as such, be removed from this publication; further information will be available in future publications. If you have any feedback on these proposed changes please send these to enquiries@nhsdigital.nhs.uk with ‘MHSDS Monthly’ in the subject.

The Mental Health Data Hub was launched In February 2018; the hub brings together information on mental health data into a single place and contains visualisations and time series of select data from within this publication. This publication brings together the Learning Disabilities and Autism (LDA) data from the Assuring Transformation (AT) collection and the LDA service specific statistics from the Mental Health Statistics Data Set (MHSDS). A couple of figures on commissioner counts were corrected in the AT CSV file on 20th May 2021. There are differences in the inpatient figures between the MHSDS and AT data sets and work is underway to better understand these. The MHSDS LDA data are currently labelled experimental as they are undergoing evaluation. Further information on the quality of these statistics is available in the Data Quality section of the main report. There is a slight difference in scope between the two data collections. The release comprises: Assuring Transformation Publication. MHSDS LDA Publication: These statistics are derived from submissions made using version 4.1 of the Mental Health Services Dataset (MHSDS). Prior to May 2018 the LDA service specific statistics were included in the main MHSDS publication. MHSDS Multiple Submission Window Model (MSWM) The MHSDS v4.1 data model allows providers to retrospectively submit data for any monthly reporting period until the end of year cut-off as part of the Multiple Submission Window Model (MSWM). So, for 2020-21, providers are able to resubmit data for any previous months until the end of March 2021. (This was possible for the first time in MHSDS v4.0 but just for the end of year submission for March 2020 data). This model allows providers to improve the quality of previous submissions. Historical comparison with previous years should therefore be reviewed in that context. Additional information on the MSWM for MHSDS is available via the link at the bottom of this page (related links). We hope this information is helpful and would be grateful if you could spare a couple of minutes to complete a short customer satisfaction survey.
