    Description

In 2024, the average age of the population in Italy is estimated to be 46.6 years. This figure constantly rose over the last decade. In 2010, the mean age was 43.4 years, steadily growing in the following years. Recent studies indicate that the median age is projected to increase in the future as well. By 2050, it could reach 53.4 years. Few births over the last years Italy has the highest share of the elderly population in Europe. In 2023, 24 percent of the Italian inhabitants were aged 65 years and over. One of the main reasons for the population aging is the low number of births recorded in the last years. In fact, Italy counted in 2023 about 6.4 births every 100,000 inhabitants, the lowest figure recorded in the past years. Longer lifespan In addition to a low birth rate, Italy is among the countries with the highest life expectancy worldwide. In 2023, life expectancy at birth for Italian women was 85.2 years, whereas Italian men could expect to live up to 81.1 years. A longer life expectancy combined with fewer births explain why the average age of Italian inhabitants has been rising in the last years.

    Description

The population of Italy is getting older every year, becoming one of the oldest ones in the world. In 2024, the average age of the Italian population was 46.6 years, 3.2 years more than the average age registered in 2010. However, the age differs significantly depending on the region. According to the most recent data for 2024, the “oldest” citizens of the Italian peninsula live in the region of Liguria (average age 49.5 years), whereas the youngest inhabit Campania (44.2 years on average). Women live longer than men The difference in the average age of the population can be observed not only on a regional basis, but also between genders. In 2021, Italian women were on average roughly three years older than men. When it comes to the life expectancy, studies from 2023 confirm the longevity of Italian women. In fact, females in Italy are expected to live on average about four years longer than men. The Old Continent In 2023, Europe was the continent with the highest share of population older than 65 years. Whereas the worldwide percentage of the population over 65 years was of ten percent, the percentage of elderly people in the Old Continent reached 19 percent.

    Description

Monaco is the country with the highest median age in the world. The population has a median age of around 56 years, which is around six years more than in Japan and Saint Pierre and Miquelon – the other countries that make up the top three. Southern European countries make up a large part of the top 20, with Italy, Slovenia, Greece, San Marino, Andorra, and Croatia all making the list. Low infant mortality means higher life expectancy Monaco and Japan also have the lowest infant mortality rates in the world, which contributes to the calculation of a higher life expectancy because fewer people are dying in the first years of life. Indeed, many of the nations with a high median age also feature on the list of countries with the highest average life expectancy, such as San Marino, Japan, Italy, and Lichtenstein. Demographics of islands and small countries Many smaller countries and island nations have populations with a high median age, such as Guernsey and the Isle of Man, which are both island territories within the British Isles. An explanation for this could be that younger people leave to seek work or education opportunities, while others choose to relocate there for retirement.

    Description

In the last decade, the average age of the Dutch population increased year on year. Whereas the population had an average age of around 30.8 years in 1950, the average age reached 42.5 years by 2023. As a result, in this period the grey population pressure (the ratio of the non-working population compared to the working population) increased as well.

     Historical development

Since the 1950s, the average age of the population has increased significantly. In nearly 70 years, the population’s average age grew by over ten years. This also caused a more than doubling of the grey population pressure in the country in this period, from 14 percent in 1950 to 33.1 percent in 2020. By 2060, the grey population pressure in the Netherlands is forecast to reach nearly 50 percent, meaning that for every working person in the country, there will also be a non-working person.

    Comparison to Belgium

The average age of the population in the Netherlands was comparable to the average age of the population in neighboring country Belgium, which reached 41.87 years in 2020. In Belgium too, the average age of the population is expected to increase in the future. By 2022, the average age here is forecast to reach 42.08 years.

    Description

In 2020, the average age in Thailand is expected to reach 38.2 years, twenty years higher than in 1980, when it began to rise after a steady decrease in prior years. Previously, from 1950 to 1975, the average age hovered around 17 years. The increased average age corresponds with rising life expectancy globally, accelerating especially around the mid-twentieth century onward. In this century, the life expectancy in Thailand has increased by roughly 2.5 years since 2007, reaching 78.39 in 2017. The standard of living is increasing In Thailand, people ages 15 to 64 have consistently made up the majority of the population from 2007 to 2017. In this time, the older population grew increased by about three percent, while the younger population shrunk at roughly the same rate. This indicates that many people within the middle age category are reaching 65 or older, and that the birth rate is simultaneously declining. Birth rates are declining Every year, families are having fewer children in Thailand, with a fertility rate of less than 1.5 children per women of childbearing age in 2017. This is not necessarily a bad sign – it points towards increasing healthcare and living standards. Another indicator for this is the decreasing infant mortality in Thailand, meaning more of the children born each year survive. Lower infant mortality also contributes to the calculations of a higher life expectancy, and thus affects the country’s median age.

    Description

Since 1970, the median age of China’s population has continued to increase from around 20 years to around 37.5 years in 2020. According to estimates from the United Nations, the increasing trend will slow down when the median age will reach 50 years in the middle of the 21st century and will remain at around 60 years up to 2100. China’s aging population Although the median age of China’s population is still lower than in many developed countries, for example in Japan, the consequences of a rapidly aging population have already become a concern for the country’s future. As the most populated country in the world, the large labor force in China contributed to the country’s astonishing economic growth in the last decades. Nowadays however, the aging population is going to become a burden for China’s social welfare system and could change China’s economic situation. Reasons for the aging population Like in many other countries, increasing life expectancy is regarded as the main reason for the aging of the population. As healthcare and living standards have improved, life expectancy in China has also increased. In addition, the one-child policy led to a decreasing fertility rate in China, which further increased the share of older people in the society. Even though the one-child policy has been abolished in 2016, many young people are refraining from having children, largely due to the high costs of raising a child, career pressure and the pursuit of freedom.

    Description

The median age in India was 27 years old in 2020, meaning half the population was older than that, half younger. This figure was lowest in 1970, at 18.1 years, and was projected to increase to 47.8 years old by 2100. Aging in India India has the second largest population in the world, after China. Because of the significant population growth of the past years, the age distribution remains skewed in favor of the younger age bracket. This tells a story of rapid population growth, but also of a lower life expectancy. Economic effects of a young population Many young people means that the Indian economy must support a large number of students, who demand education from the economy but cannot yet work. Educating the future workforce will be important, because the economy is growing as well and is one of the largest in the world. Failing to do this could lead to high youth unemployment and political consequences. However, a productive and young workforce could provide huge economic returns for India.

Although the vast majority of U.S. social networkers knew of Facebook, the likeability of the platform was not so impressive at 68 percent. Nonetheless, usage, loyalty, and buzz around the brand remained relatively high. Facebook, Meta, and the metaverse A strategic rebranding from Facebook to Meta Platforms in late 2021 boded well for the company in Mark Zuckerberg’s attempt to be strongly linked to the metaverse, and to be considered more than just a social media company. According to a survey conducted in the U.S. in early 2022, Meta Platforms is the brand that Americans most associated with the metaverse.

Spain is gradually becoming older, or so it seems when looking at the latest studies which forecast that the average Spaniard would be 51.79 years old by the year 2050. The Mediterranean country featured a median age of 26.48 years old in 1950, but this trend shifted towards a steady aging of the Spanish population in the subsequent years. Spain’s median age was approximately 44 years in 2020. Aging: a common problem across the continent Data related to age in the Mediterranean country essentially behaves similarly to the rest of its European counterparts, whose population is also slowly but surely getting older. This will not come as a surprise since Spain has one of the highest life expectancies at birth in the world and the lowest European fertility rate, which stood at 1.29 children per woman according to the latest reports. Older, but growing population Despite its aging, the population of Spain has been growing for the past couple of years and is expected to surpass 49 million residents by 2026, mainly due to immigration. During the last ten years, the country featured a continuous population density of approximately 95 inhabitants per square kilometer – a figure far from the European average, which stood nearly at 112 inhabitants per square kilometer in 2021.

    Description

In 2025, the average age in the Philippines is expected to reach 26.1 years, increasing to roughly 46.1 years of age by 2100. This is a significant rise, considering that until the year 2000, the country’s median age was under 20 years old. From 2011 to 2021, the share of very young people decreased, while the age brackets for people aged 15-64 and 65 or older grew. This shift in age structure implies a lower birth rate, as well as an aging population. Birth and family size As of 2020, the birth rate in the Philippines is just under 22 children born per thousand inhabitants each year, about 3 less than in the decade before. The fertility rate has likewise been decreasing since 2007, but is still higher than the Oceania region’s average as of 2020. Fewer newborns each year contributes to a lower median age. High mortality in the Philippines is preventable Life expectancy is also factor in a rising median age, although increasing only marginally in the Philippines compared with neighboring countries Cambodia, Myanmar, and Laos (but still higher than in these countries). The life expectancy in the Philippines was just under 72 years of age in 2017, and roughly three years shorter than in Thailand or Vietnam. One factor that lowers the life expectancy is the high mortality rate due to noncontagious diseases, such as cancer and heart and respiratory problems, accounting for more than a quarter of early deaths from ages 30 to 70 in the Philippines.
