In 2025, Liguria was the region with the largest share of the population aged 65 years or older. By contrast, 21 percent of inhabitants in Campania belonged to this age group, the lowest percentage nationwide. Over the last half century, the average age of Italian women walking down the aisle increased by roughly five years. In the 1970s, the Italian bride got married with her other half at the age of 25, whereas in 2017 the average age of women at marriage was of about 30.7 years.

Different age at marriage in different regions

The average age of the spouses at marriage varies from region to region. In 2018, the regions which registered the youngest brides and grooms were Calabria and Sicily. Calabrian and Campanian women tied the knot at the age of 30.6 years and 30.8 years, respectively. The average age of men reached 33.7 years in Campania, the lowest nationwide.

Marriage in Italy

In 2018, Italy registered about 195.8 thousand marriages, about 22 thousand weddings less in comparison with the figures from 2010. Overall, the marriage rate recorded in 2018 was one of the lowest values in the period considered.

When compared to the country’s average, women in Trentino-South Tyrol were expected to live roughly three years longer. High lifespans for Italians Another factor that contributes to making the population older is that people are living longer than ever before. Data about life expectancy reveal that the expected lifespan at birth is rising: in 2023, it stood at 81.1 years for men and 85.2 years for women. In fact, lifespans in Italy are one of the highest worldwide, even above the European average.

Life expectancy in Italy was just under thirty in the year 1870, and over the course of the next 150 years, it is expected to have increased to 83.3 by the year 2020. Although life expectancy has generally increased throughout Italy's history, there were several times where the rate deviated from its previous trajectory. In 2023, the Italian region which registered the highest fertility rate was Trentino-South Tyrol, where the average number of children born per female reached 1.42 infants. Over the last years, the fertility rate in Italy has constantly decreased, except for 2021 when a slight increase by 0.01 points was recorded. The lowest fertility rates worldwide From the global perspective, Italy was one of the world's twenty countries with the lowest fertility rate in 2023. In 2023, the highest regional Gross Domestic Product in Italy was registered in the northern region of Lombardy, roughly 490 billion euros, followed by Lazio, about 239 billion euros, and Veneto, 137 billion euros. The lowest GDP was recorded in Aosta Valley, in the north, and in Molise, in the south of Italy. A deep economic gap Among the top-10 Italian regions with the highest GDP, five are located in the north of the country: Lombardy, Veneto, Emilia Romagna, Piedmont, and Liguria. The demographic divide Despite weaker economic indicators compared to the north, southern regions record better demographic figures. Italy’s population is progressively aging and the number of residents has declined recently. The median age of Italians is expected to reach 52.9 years by 2050. However, the south of the country contributes to mitigating the demographic decline. In fact, birth rates are the highest in the southern regions, in Sicily, and in Sardinia, with 6.6 childbirths per 1,000 inhabitants, well above the 6.2 births per 1,000 residents recorded in the northwest. Located in the north of the country, Lombardy had the highest mean gross salary in 2024, while workers in Basilicata earned the lowest average wages nationwide. The figure for Lombardy amounted to ****** euros, around *** euros more than in Lazio, where the capital Rome is situated, as reported by Job Pricing. Trentino-South Tyrol was the region with the second-highest average gross salary, ****** euros per year. The last positions of the raking were occupied by the southern regions, with an average wage of ****** euros. High wages and large pay gap  According to the same source, employees working in banking and financial services had some of the largest salaries in Italy. However, men earned roughly ** percent more than women (****** euros versus ****** euros). Similarly, the annual gross salary in the insurance industry was ** percent higher in favor of men. Low-wage workers The south of Italy was also the place registering the highest percentage of low paid employees. These are employees with an hourly salary of less than ********** of the median salary over the total number of employees. More specifically, in the south and on the islands, the share of low-wage employees was **** and **** percent, respectively. In the northern regions, the share amounted to only *** percent.

As of the 2023, the illicit drug in Italy with the highest average price was cocaine, at roughly **** euros per gram, followed by white heroin and brown heroin. Cannabis use Cannabis was the most consumed type of illicit drug in Italy, with more than eight percent of the population having consumed it at least once in 2022. This substance was the most popular among students, with nearly ** percent of the students using it at least once in the given year.
