In 2022 the average age of mothers giving birth to their first child in England and Wales was 29.2 years of age, followed by 31.5 years for the second child, 32.6 for the third child, and 33.6 for the fourth child.

In 2022, the mean age of Hispanic mothers at first birth amounted to 25.7 years in the United States. In comparison, the mean age of mothers of all races and origins in the U.S. was 27.4 years.

Between 1991 and 2021 there has been a clear trend of mothers having children later in life in the United Kingdom, with the average age of mothers in the increasing from 27.7 in 1991 to 30.9 by 2021.

From 2013 to 2023, the average age of women at the birth of their first child was constantly lower in Iceland than in the other four Nordic countries. In 2022, the average age of women at their first birth was 28.9 years, whereas at was just below or slightly over 30 years in all other Nordic countries. That year, Sweden had the highest average age with 30.3 years.

In 2018, the median age of mothers at the birth of their first child in New Zealand was 30.5 years, significantly older than the average age in 1980. The median age of at childbirth in the country has increased over the past few decades, reflecting the changing societal attitudes across different generations in the country.

In 2023, the average age at childbirth among women in France was 31.1 years old. It appears that the mean age of French mothers at childbirth has been increasing since the 1990’s. In 2015, more than 52 percent of French newborns had a mother aged between 30 and 39 years.

Women are having children at an older age

Studies have shown that in France, women tend to have children at an older age than before. In 1990, the proportion of newborns whose mothers were 40 or older amounted to 2.15 percent in France. Years later, in 2014, and after a gradual progression over the years, this share reached 5.13 percent. French mothers do not only have their children at an older age, they mostly have their first born later. In 2014, more than 26 percent of newborns born from a mother aged 40 and older were their first child.

The most fertile country in Europe

Even though the mean age of mothers at first birth is increasing in most Western countries, it seems that women in France still have children at a younger age than most of their European counterparts. But French women are not only younger when they give birth, they also have more children. In 2018, France was the most fertile country in Europe with nearly 2 births per women. A number that has remained relatively stable for several years.

In Portugal, during the considered period, the average age of women when giving birth to their first child increased at a practically regular pace. In 2010, 28.7 years was the average age of first-time mothers. By 2015, this value had risen to 29.5 years of age. In 2023, women giving birth to their first child were, on average, 30.2 years old, which was a decrease from the two previous years.

The average age of mothers in Germany at the birth of their first child was 30.3 years old in 2023, compared to 28.8 years in 2009. The second, third and fourth children are born between the ages of 32 and 35, on average.

The figures show a gradual increase in the average age of mothers at childbirth in Italy between 2002 and 2024. As of 2023, the average age of mothers at childbirth in Italy was estimated to be 32.6 years, an increase of two years compared to 2002. Sicily was the Italian region with the lowest average age, with mothers aged 31.7 years on average when giving birth. Fertility rate Most developed countries today are characterized by a decline in the number of births. Italy hit a new low in 2022, with less than 400,000 births. In 2024, it was among the countries with the lowest fertility rate in the world, with every woman having 1.18 babies on average. Assisted reproductive treatment (ART) In 2023, roughly four percent of pregnancies in Italy were obtained through assisted reproductive treatments (ART) and women above 40 had the highest rate of pregnancies resulting from ART, with 19.2 percent. The number of ART undertaken in Italy increased constantly in the past two decades, except for a slight decline in 2020 when a general decrease in the number of births was experienced with the outbreak of COVID-19.

We study the effects of women’s school starting age on the infant health of their offspring. In Spain, children born in December start school a year earlier than those born the following January, despite being essentially the same age. We follow a regression discontinuity design to compare the health at birth of the children of women born in January versus the previous December, using administrative, population-level data. We find small and insignificant effects on average weight at birth, but, compared to the children of December-born mothers, the children of January-born mothers are more likely to have very low birthweight. We then show that January-born women have the same educational attainment and the same partnership dynamics as December-born women. However, they finish school later and are (several months) older when they have their first child. Our results suggest that maternal age is a plausible mechanism behind our estimated impacts of school starting age on infant health.

Women in Romania gave birth to their first child at an average age of 27.5 years old in 2023. Over the last years, the average age of first birth remained around 27 years old, peaking in 2020 at 27.8 years.
