During the third quarter of 2024, internet users in the United Kingdom (UK) spent an average over five and a half hours per day accessing the internet via any device. UK online audiences spent approximately one hour and 37 minutes per day on social media, while an additional 50 minutes were devoted to using a gaming console daily. Traditional media - is usage declining? Some forms of traditional media in the country are in decline more than others when it comes to usage, which is especially visible in the case of TV. In recent years the number of TV households in the UK has remained fairly unchanged, however, the time spent watching television has been constantly decreasing. Interestingly, radio listenership has not followed this trend. Digital radio format usage is growing as per some studies. Yet, live radio dominates the time spent with any audio in the UK by a large margin.British radio is a showcase for the loyalty of its fans. In mid-2023, after 30 years of employment at BBC, Ken Bruce, one of the highest-earning presenters of the company, left to work at a rival radio station. He took both of his signature programs to his new employer. Even though BBC Radio 2 remains the leading radio station in the UK by audience numbers, Bruce’s departure meant a loss of a million listeners for the BBC between the first and second quarters of 2023.

The consumption of electricity in the United Kingdom has fluctuated on an annual and seasonal basis throughout the period depicted, and indicated a general downward trend. Demand was consistently higher in the winter months, peaking each year in January or December. In April 2024, electricity consumption in the UK amounted to 22.7 terawatt-hours. Domestic users consume the most electricity Although the industrial sector's electricity demand was higher between 1990 and 2005, domestic consumers have since reclaimed their spot as the largest electricity end users in the UK. East and South East England were the regions with the highest domestic electricity consumption in Great Britain, with more than 3.7 megawatt-hours consumed per household in 2022. Declining electricity demand in the UK Electricity consumption in the UK has seen a mostly continual decrease since the turn of the century. After peaking at 357.2 terawatt hours in 2005, consumption has fallen below 300 terawatt hours in 2020. This is despite the UK's population growing by approximately seven million during this period. Projections on electricity consumption in the UK show that the decreasing trend will last until at least 2025.

    Description

The United Kingdom's average residential fixed broadband speed soared to nearly 140 megabits per second (Mbps) in 2023, up from just 103 Mbps in 2022. This rapid increase reflects the country's expanding fiber infrastructure, enabling ultra-fast connections in many residential areas. FTTC remains the leading connection type The rollout and adoption of fiber infrastructure has been designated a top priority by the UK government, with fast, reliable broadband considered crucial in realizing digital transformation efforts across the UK’s four nations. The number of fiber- to-the-premises (FTTP) broadband connections in the UK increased to almost 5.7 million percent in 2023, up from just 3.7 million the previous year. FTTP is considered ‘full fiber’ in that fiber optic cable is used for the entire length of the connection. However, most UK connections that year were fiber-to-the-cabinet (FTTC) connections, which rely on existing copper cables to deliver services from cabinets to premises. Shifting consumption prompts surging data traffic The surge in UK fixed download speeds has been met with increasing broadband data use. The average residential broadband connection consumed more than 500 gigabytes per month in 2023, up from just 30 gigabytes a decade prior. This increase in data traffic reflects the broad adoption of data intensive activities such as 4K streaming, online gaming, and cloud storage.
