The Consumer Price Index (CPI) for food is a component of the all-items CPI. The CPI measures the average change over time in the prices paid by urban consumers for a representative market basket of consumer goods and services. While the all-items CPI measures the price changes for all consumer goods and services, including food, the CPI for food measures the changes in the retail prices of food items only.

Cost of food in the United States increased 3.10 percent in September of 2025 over the same month in the previous year. This dataset provides the latest reported value for - United States Food Inflation - plus previous releases, historical high and low, short-term forecast and long-term prediction, economic calendar, survey consensus and news.

Monthly average retail prices for selected food products, for Canada and provinces. Prices are presented for the current month and the previous four months. Prices are based on transaction data from Canadian retailers, and are presented in Canadian current dollars.

The average for 2021 based on 165 countries was 105.854 index points. The highest value was in South Korea: 208.84 index points and the lowest value was in India: 58.17 index points. The indicator is available from 2017 to 2021. Below is a chart for all countries where data are available.

The FAO Food Price Index (FFPI) averaged 128.8 points in September 2025. This represents an increase of 3.4 percent compared to the same month of the previous year. Food prices worldwide Some food commodities have been hit harder than others in the past years. Global dairy, meat, and vegetable oil prices were on an upward trajectory in the first half of 2025. Regionally, the European Union (EU) and the UK have experienced a particularly high increase in the annual consumer prices for food and non-alcoholic beverages, as compared to other selected countries worldwide. Inflation in Europe The inflation rate for food in the EU grew from 0.2 percent in May 2021 to 19.2 percent in March 2023, as compared to the same month in the previous year. In the following months, the food inflation started decreasing again, yet has picked up again in 2025 in line with the global trend. The overall inflation rate in the Euro area reached its peak in December 2022 at 9.2 percent. The rate has since fallen to 2.4 percent in December 2024. As measured by the Harmonized Index of Consumer Prices (HICP), inflation rates in Europe were highest in Turkey, Romania, and Estonia as of April 2025.

Online inflation of food products followed the trend of physical stores and showed a significant peak in 2022. In North America, online food prices went up by **** percent that year, before decreasing to a **** year-over-year percentage change in 2023. By 2025, online prices of food products might increase by **** percent in the considered region.

Nigeria: Food price index, world average = 100: The latest value from 2021 is 101.71 index points, an increase from 84.436 index points in 2017. In comparison, the world average is 105.854 index points, based on data from 165 countries. Historically, the average for Nigeria from 2017 to 2021 is 93.073 index points. The minimum value, 84.436 index points, was reached in 2017 while the maximum of 101.71 index points was recorded in 2021.

Food prices can vary a lot, and changes over time can often give us insights into the underlying markets and agricultural production within countries.

The price of foods gives an important indicator of the balance between agricultural production and market demand. These prices matter to consumers and producers. They have obvious impacts on consumer affordability. But they also affect the income of farmers and producers.

In low-to-middle-income countries, a large share of the population is employed in agriculture. Producers typically benefit from higher food prices; consumers from lower prices. Food markets can therefore have a strong impact on food affordability, hunger and undernourishment, and dietary quality.

Abstract

Food price inflation is an important metric to inform economic policy but traditional sources of consumer prices are often produced with delay during crises and only at an aggregate level. This may poorly reflect the actual price trends in rural or poverty-stricken areas, where large populations reside in fragile situations. This data set includes food price estimates and is intended to help gain insight in price developments beyond what can be formally measured by traditional methods. The estimates are generated using a machine-learning approach that imputes ongoing subnational price surveys, often with accuracy similar to direct measurement of prices. The data set provides new opportunities to investigate local price dynamics in areas where populations are sensitive to localized price shocks and where traditional data are not available.

        A dataset of monthly food price inflation estimates (aggregated for all food products available in the data) is also available for all countries covered by this modeling exercise.
