The average mobile data usage per capita in 2018 was significantly less for the ETNO perimeter of Europe than for Japan, South Korea, and the United States. Europeans on average used 4.3 gigabytes per month of mobile data compared to that of 6.91, 7.15, and 7.24 gigabytes per month in Japan, South Korea, and the United States, respectively. It is important to note that there is a huge variation between European countries in terms of average usage, as Europe* is a regional representation compared to the selected countries included in this study.
According to forecasts, smartphone data usage per month in Mexico is set to be about 7.2 gigabytes per month in 2021. Looking ahead to 2026, traffic is expected to reach approximately 28.4 gigabytes. In Latin America, smartphone data traffic is also projected to grow in the coming years.
This statistic displays the average monthly smartphone cellular data usage from 2016 to 2021. In 2016, on average a smartphone consumed 1.7 GBs of cellular data per month. That number is projected to reach 8.9 GBs in 2021.

In 2024, smartphones across the globe used an average of 20.29 gigabytes of mobile data per month, up from 17.27 gigabytes the previous year. This figure is expected to reach 23.78 gigabytes in 2025, and 42.38 gigabytes by 2029.
As of 2023, the average data consumption per user per month in India was at 24.1 gigabytes. 4G data traffic contributes to 99 percent of the overall data traffic while 5G was launched in India in October 2022. Increased online education, remote working for professionals and higher OTT viewership contributed to the data traffic growth.
In a survey conducted amongst mobile users in Australia in 2022, around 16 percent of respondents indicated that they use their entire mobile internet data allowance each month. The average monthly data use per fixed residential broadband connection reached 535 gigabytes in the United Kingdom in 2023, up from 482 gigabytes in 2022. Increasing broadband data traffic in the UK reflects the broad adoption of data intensive activities such as 4K streaming and online gaming.
Mobile data usage in Singapore reached an average of 86 petabytes (86,610 terabytes) per month in the third quarter of 2023. Despite the expansion of public WLANs, mobile data use remained on the rise.
Data pricing trend in Singapore Singapore has always had one of the most expensive data prices in Southeast Asia. However, new technologies such as 5G, as well as the competitive telecommunications market, led to price reductions over the past few years. In 2022, one gigabyte of mobile data cost around 0.61 U.S. dollars on average, indicating a decrease of more than two dollars compared to 2019. Despite the foreseeable trend of decreasing data prices, it would still remain relatively high compared to neighboring Indonesia's 0.28 U.S. dollars per gigabyte.
Singapore’s mobile data providers The telecommunications market in Singapore is shared by three main providers, Singtel, Starhub and M1. Among the leading providers of the country, Singtel had the best 5G coverage experience, as of May 2023.
In the first quarter of 2021, the average Singaporean mobile internet user consumed about 12.7 GB of data per month. With the increasing demand of online video and social media content this figure is expected to further grow over the next few years.
Since the declaration of the coronavirus (COVID-19) as a pandemic (March 11, 2020), the average daily broadband usage in the United States has gone up compared to earlier in the year. In the week from March 11 to March 18, 2020, the average daily broadband data usage per user in the United States was 6.3 GB during the office hours, an increase of 41.4 percent compared to January. The increase is most likely due to more people working from home and overall restrictions for people to stay at home.
The number of daily active users of Microsoft Teams has stayed the same in the past year, around 320 million. Due to the impact of the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak and the growing practices of social distancing and working from home, Microsoft has seen dramatic increases in the daily use of their communication and collaboration platform within a short period of time. Microsoft Teams is part of Microsoft 365, a set of collaboration apps and services launched in July 2017. Increased data consumption from “staying at home” The average daily in-home data usage in the United States has increased significantly during the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak in March 2020. Compared to the same amount of days in March 2019, the daily average in-home data usage increased by a total of 4.4 gigabytes in March 2020, a roughly 40 percent increase. Data consumption from the usage of gaming consoles and smartphones increased the most, although the increases can be observed across nearly all device categories. Social media platforms and video and conference all platforms are the technology services that are used the most during the outbreak in the U.S.
