This table shows regional figures on the average consumption of energy (natural gas and electricity) of private dwellings broken down by type of dwelling and ownership for Nederland, group of provinces, provinces and municipalities. Besides, for total dwellings only, the share of heat distribution (district heating) has been added, because this is relevant for the interpretation of the height of the average consumption of natural gas.
Data available from: 2010
Status of the figures: All figures from 2010 - 2021 are definite. Figures of 2022 and 2023 are revised provisional. Figures for 2024 are provisional.
Changes as of September 2025: Figures added for 2024. Figures for 2022 and 2023 have been revised based on smart-meter data. These figures are more accurate than figures based on standard yearly consumption data.
Changes as of October 2023: Provisional figures of 2022 have been added. Figures of 2021 have been updated. The category “Average consumption of electricity” is replaced by “Average supply of electricity” and a category “Average net supply of electricity” has been added.
When will new figures be published? A revision to the method of this statistic is currently underway, causing the table to be delayed. New figures will come in the 3rd quarter of the folowing year.

TwitterNatural gas consumption in the United States amounted to 33.11 trillion cubic feet in 2024. This was a record high, up from 30.6 trillion cubic feet in 2020. Figures increased notably from 2018 onward. Natural gas demand highest in the power sector In the U.S., natural gas plays a huge role in generating electricity and heating homes. The electric power sector is responsible for the largest share of natural gas consumption in the U.S., followed closely by the industrial sector. Consumption of natural gas by the electric power sector has doubled since 2005, as coal use plummeted. Natural gas consumption close to petroleum levels Natural gas is the second most consumed fuel in the U.S. following petroleum, with natural gas looking to overtake petroleum in the coming years. Benefiting from a surge in production following technological advances in the 2010s, U.S. natural gas demand has increased notably, especially as it pertains to its use in the power sector and the export of LNG.

TwitterNatural gas prices are the highest in the residential sector. In 2024, U.S. households paid 14.59 U.S. dollars per 1,000 cubic feet, down from an all-time high of over 15.2 U.S. dollars per 1,000 cubic feet. Overall, U.S. residential natural gas prices have increased nearly tenfold since 1975. Commercial natural gas costs were second-highest, while prices in the electric power sector were the lowest, at around three U.S. dollars on average. Prices for the industrial and electric power customers tend to be close to the wholesale electricity price. The growing natural gas market U.S. natural gas consumption has increased more than any other fuel after the U.S. oil boom of the 2010s. Petroleum consumption has been more variable, and use of coal has significantly decreased. Today, natural gas is used extensively for electric power generation, with it having overtaken coal as the primary electricity generating source. This is despite coal prices being a lot less volatile and generally lower than natural gas. Future of natural gas on the global stage Natural gas is also an important energy source worldwide. It has been the second-largest source of electricity generation since the 2000s and has slowly narrowed the gap to coal, the world's main power source. In 2024, natural gas-powered turbines the world over generated 6,890 terawatt-hours of electricity.
