TwitterIn 2024, passengers travelling on a domestic flight had the largest carbon footprint of transportation modes in the UK, at *** grams of carbon dioxide equivalent per kilometer (g CO₂e per km). By comparison, the carbon footprint of passengers travelling by train was just ** g CO₂e per km. Which cars have the largest carbon footprint? After flights, cars typically had the highest carbon footprints per kilometer in the UK. The average petrol car produced *** grams of CO₂e per km in 2024, while diesel cars averaged roughly *** grams of CO₂e per km. Both vehicle types had higher emissions per kilometer than the average battery electric vehicle (BEV). In terms of market segments, luxury cars had the highest average carbon footprint of all car types. Passenger cars are the largest source of UK transportation emissions by far. Transportation emissions in the UK There had been little change in UK transportation GHG emissions since 1990, until a dramatic slump in 2020 due the outbreak of COVID-19. While emissions rebounded in the following two years, they are projected to have fallen again in 2023 to around *** MtCO₂e. Although this figure is well below pre-pandemic levels, transportation is still the largest source of emissions in the UK.

As part of the Analysis Function Reproducible Analytical Pipeline Strategy, processes to create all National Travel Survey (NTS) statistics tables have been improved to follow the principles of Reproducible Analytical Pipelines (RAP). This has resulted in improved efficiency and quality of NTS tables and therefore some historical estimates have seen very minor change, at least the fifth decimal place.
All NTS tables have also been redesigned in an accessible format where they can be used by as many people as possible, including people with an impaired vision, motor difficulties, cognitive impairments or learning disabilities and deafness or impaired hearing.

The Motor Vehicle Parts & Accessories Manufacturing industry remains healthy thanks to the aftermarket as UK car production dwindles. According to the SMMT, UK car manufacturers assembled 779,584 vehicles in 2024, a 13.9% decrease from 2023, with engine production down 7.1% in the same year. Car production between January and August 2025 fell further by 5.9% compared to the same period in 2024, reducing the volume of parts needed at factories. Sharp dips in car production in previous years, coupled with current struggles in the automotive sector, directly affect the volume of parts ordered. Foreign orders present some opportunities, but the competition for imports is fierce, reducing the market share of domestic manufacturers.
Over the five years through 2025-26, industry revenue is forecast to expand at a compound annual rate of 2% to £12 billion, when the average profit margin will be 6% and revenue growth of 2.2% in 2025-26. In 2024-25, revenue expanded thanks to aftermarket orders as car production sank. Higher car usage and the presence of older cars on UK roads lead to strong retail sales, keeping revenue strong for many car parts makers. Operating profit has narrowed amid rising input costs and low prices for vehicle parts and accessories, caused partly by the high degree of import penetration and substantial buying power held by car manufacturing giants like Jaguar Land Rover, Nissan and BMW. The threat of imports has compelled manufacturers to maintain competitive prices.
The car parts market is set to perform well. Exports will rise in the coming years as supply chain disruptions dissipate. Fuel economy improvements, safety enhancements and the increasing sophistication of car technology will support vehicle part and accessory manufacturing, while the aftermarket will sustain essential repair sales. The number of vehicles on UK roads and miles driven will climb over the next decade, supporting demand for crucial parts and industry revenue growth. Component makers must adjust their operations to produce components for electric and hybrid electric vehicles, which will account for a higher share of domestic production as the UK focuses on achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. Revenue is anticipated to climb at a compound annual rate of 1.9% to reach £13.2 billion over the five years through 2030-31.

The Department for Transport is committed to continuously improving the quality and transparency of our outputs, in line with the Code of Practice for Statistics. In line with this, we have recently concluded a planned review of the processes and methodologies used in the production of Vehicle licensing statistics data. The review sought to seek out and introduce further improvements and efficiencies in the coding technologies we use to produce our data and as part of that, we have identified several historical errors across the published data tables affecting different historical periods. These errors are the result of mistakes in past production processes that we have now identified, corrected and taken steps to eliminate going forward.
Most of the revisions to our published figures are small, typically changing values by less than 1% to 3%. The key revisions are:
Licensed Vehicles (2014 Q3 to 2016 Q3)
We found that some unlicensed vehicles during this period were mistakenly counted as licensed. This caused a slight overstatement, about 0.54% on average, in the number of licensed vehicles during this period.
3.5 - 4.25 tonnes Zero Emission Vehicles (ZEVs) Classification
Since 2023, ZEVs weighing between 3.5 and 4.25 tonnes have been classified as light goods vehicles (LGVs) instead of heavy goods vehicles (HGVs). We have now applied this change to earlier data and corrected an error in table VEH0150. As a result, the number of newly registered HGVs has been reduced by:
3.1% in 2024
2.3% in 2023
1.4% in 2022
Table VEH0156 (2018 to 2023)
Table VEH0156, which reports average CO₂ emissions for newly registered vehicles, has been updated for the years 2018 to 2023. Most changes are minor (under 3%), but the e-NEDC measure saw a larger correction, up to 15.8%, due to a calculation error. Other measures (WLTP and Reported) were less notable, except for April 2020 when COVID-19 led to very few new registrations which led to greater volatility in the resultant percentages.
Neither these specific revisions, nor any of the others introduced, have had a material impact on the statistics overall, the direction of trends nor the key messages that they previously conveyed.
Specific details of each revision made has been included in the relevant data table notes to ensure transparency and clarity. Users are advised to review these notes as part of their regular use of the data to ensure their analysis accounts for these changes accordingly.

The average speed is estimated to be 57.9 mph for the year ending March 2023, down 1.2% from March 2022.
On local ‘A’ roads for the year ending March 2023, the average delay is estimated to be 45.9 seconds per vehicle per mile (spvpm) compared to free flow. This is down 0.4% on year ending March 2022.
The average speed is estimated to be 23.6 mph for the year ending March 2023, down 0.8% on year ending March 2022.

Rural Urban Classification
Prior to 2024 rural-urban classification of residence is based on the 2011 ten-category breakdown. There is a break in series from 2024 as these are based on the 2021 six-category rural-urban classifications. A number of output areas have been reclassified from 2024 due to the new methodology, therefore the new categories are not directly comparable to the old ones.

The National Travel Survey (NTS) results in 2023 showed:
people in England made 915 trips on average in 2023, about 18 trips per week
this was an increase of 6% on 2022 and a decrease of 4% on 2019
there were increases in trip rates amongst private transport modes and public transport modes in 2023 compared to 2022, apart from London buses and active transport modes which have remained at a similar level
walking trips remained similar in 2023 with 263 trips per person, this was 5% higher than in 2019
trip rates for buses outside London saw an increase of 8% in 2023 compared to 2022 but remained below pre-pandemic (2019) levels
the 5,974 miles people travelled on average in 2023 was 11% higher than in 2022, and a decrease of 8% compared to 2019
on average people spent 353 hours travelling in 2023, around 58 minutes a day
on average people spent 22 minutes per cycling trip, 21 minutes per car driver trip and 18 minutes per walking trip, on average in 2023

TwitterWith approximately 122.1 crimes per 1,000 population, Cleveland, in North East England, had the highest crime rate of all the police force areas in England and Wales in 2024/25. High crime rates are evident in other areas of northern England, such as West Yorkshire and Greater Manchester at 114.5 and 108.2, respectively. In the UK capital, London, the crime rate was 105.5 per 1,000 people. The lowest crime rate in England was in the relatively rural areas of Wiltshire in South West England, as well as North Yorkshire. Overall crime in England and Wales The number of crimes in England and Wales reached approximately 6.74 million in 2022/23, falling slightly to 6.66 million in 2023/24, and 6.59 million in 2024/25. Overall crime has been rising steadily across England and Wales for almost a decade, even when adjusted for population rises. In 2022/23, for example, the crime rate in England and Wales was 93.6, the highest since 2006/07. When compared with the rest of the United Kingdom, England and Wales is something of an outlier, as crime rates for Scotland and Northern Ireland have not followed the same trajectory of rising crime. Additionally, there has been a sharp increase in violent crimes and sexual offences since the mid-2010s in England and Wales. While theft offences have generally been falling, the number of shoplifting offences reached a peak of 530,640 in 2024/25. Troubled justice system under pressure Alongside rising crime figures, many indicators also signal that the justice system is getting pushed to breaking point. The percentage of crimes that are solved in England and Wales was just 5.7 percent in 2023, with sexual offences having a clearance rate of just 3.6 percent. Crimes are also taking far longer than usual to pass through the justice system. In 2022, it took an average of 407 days for a crown court case to reach a conclusion from the time of the offence, compared with 233 days in 2018. This is most likely related to the large backlog of cases in crown courts, which reached over 67,750 in 2023. Furthermore, prisons in England and Wales are dangerously overcrowded, with the government even releasing some prisoners early to address the issue.

On the Strategic Road Network (SRN) for 2022, the average delay is estimated to be 9.3 seconds per vehicle per mile (spvpm), compared to free flow, a 9.4% increase on 2021 and a 2.1% decrease on 2019.
The average speed is estimated to be 58.1 mph, down 1.4% from 2021 and up 0.2% from 2019.
On local ‘A’ roads for 2022, the average delay was estimated to be 45.5 seconds per vehicle per mile compared to free flow, up 2.5% from 2021 and down 2.8% from 2019 (pre-coronavirus)
The average speed is estimated to be 23.7 mph, down 1.7% from 2021 and up 2.2% from 2019 (pre-coronavirus).
Average speeds in 2022 have stabilised towards similar trends observed before the effects of the coronavirus pandemic.
Please note that figures for the SRN and local ‘A’ roads are not directly comparable.
The Department for Transport went through an open procurement exercise and have changed GPS data providers. This led to a step change in the statistics and inability to compare the local ‘A’ roads data historically. These changes are discussed in the methodology notes.
