    Description

Falling consumer demand and a continued slump in print advertising spending have pressured Canada's Magazine and Periodical Publishing industry. As access to digital media has increased, readers have opted to consume digital publications instead of printed materials, undercutting the industry's primary revenue source. Similarly, advertisers have shifted to digital platforms and reduced their spending on print, thereby limiting publishers' opportunities for revenue growth. In response, publishers have cut staff, slimmed production, consolidated and expanded their digital offerings. However, publishers have failed to fully recapture all lost revenue with digital editions of magazines and periodicals. As a result, industry revenue is forecast to weaken at a CAGR of 4.7% to $1.0 billion by the end of 2025, with a slight downward trend of 0.1% in 2025 alone, as profit reaches 15.8%. The entire publishing sector has undergone significant changes as a result of evolving media consumption and the climb of digital-only publications. Subscriptions and circulation have also continued to depress as consumers have switched to reading online-only publications that are not included in this industry. Reform in government subsidies was introduced before the current period, when the Canada Periodical Fund (CPF) mandated a 5,000-annual paid circulation requirement to qualify for assistance and a $1.5 million per year subsidy cap, restricting prior, more lenient policies. The CPF's requirements have affected small publishers, which have struggled to meet the circulation requirements and large publications, which have absorbed higher costs due to the assistance cap. Going forward, publishers will refocus on strengthening digital offerings and monetizing data. Advertisers are expected to engage in more targeted digital advertising as consumers continue to shift toward digital formats. Although publishers will expand their digital presence in response, competition from external online-only publications, such as blogs, will accelerate and potentially dampen any gains. Growth in digital revenue is expected to only partially offset declines in subscription sales. Overall, industry revenue is poised to stumble at a CAGR of 0.5% to $1.0 billion through the end of 2030.

    Description

Book and magazine wholesalers have battled for sales with the rise of online content. The digital shift has altered how people read, buy and access content, and its impact on tangible goods like books, newspapers and magazines has been especially pronounced. In recent years, wholesale demand has softened as readers migrate towards ebooks, digital magazines, online news and online subscription services. Subdued demand has intensified competition, pushed some publishers to bypass independents and squeezed margins as retailers lean towards digital or direct-to-consumer options. Yet magazines have still found pockets of demand in categories like food, entertainment and home and garden, providing a glimmer of resilience amid broader headwinds. Overall, industry revenue is expected to decline at an annualised 3.2% over the five years through 2025-26 to reach $1.4 billion. This includes an anticipated drop of 1.5% in 2025-26. Book and magazine wholesalers have witnessed demand drifting away from traditional print towards digital formats and alternative distribution channels. Roy Morgan data shows that magazine readership among Australians aged 14 and over for print and online formats has eased from about 67.6% of the population in the year to March 2024 to 65.4% in the year to March 2025, with print-only readership shrinking as consumers encounter free or discounted content. Book-buying trends have mirrored that shift, with around 64% of Australians buying a book in the year to April 2024, below the 19-country global average of 72%, according to the Study in Consumer Behaviour 2024 published by RISE Bookselling. Rising sustainability preferences and increasing wholesale bypass by major publishers have created a tough pricing landscape for wholesalers. Going forwards, digital content will continue to erode print share, even as magazines and books migrate to new formats and business models. Wholesalers will increasingly consolidate or choose to specialise as struggling businesses exit or narrow their focus to niche titles. Growth will hinge on digital investments, direct-to-consumer platforms, data-driven forecasting, print-on-demand and AI-assisted workflows that cut costs and improve inventory precision. Downstream demand from newsagents and bookstores will remain under pressure, but wholesalers that sustain diverse publisher partnerships and build robust online channels may offset some print disruption with new revenue streams, better profit margins and closer retailer collaborations. Industry revenue is forecast to fall at an annualised 0.5% over the five years through 2030-31 to reach $1.3 billion.

    Description

The declining demand for print in major European markets like the UK, Germany and France means newspaper publishers face shrinking revenue from both sales and printed advertisements. Publishers are adjusting by developing their digital presence, introducing subscription paywalls, subscriber-only newsletters, digital advertising initiatives and strategic media partnerships to support revenue as traditional print readership continues to slump. In the five years through 2025, Book, Newspaper & Magazine Publishing revenue is projected to drop at a compound annual rate of 4.6%, to reach €102.5 billion, including an estimated drop of 3.9% in 2025 when the average industry profit margin is expected to reach 9%. Despite difficult conditions, the book publishing segment has had a strong growth in revenue since 2020, fuelled by consumers picking up more books during lockdown periods. However, the cost of print publishing has risen significantly in recent years, driven higher by global inflation with the overall producer price index for paper and paper products in the Euro area climbed 1.1% since January 2025. Publishers also face higher transport and wage costs, which are squeezing profit and limiting revenue growth. In 2024, Western European transport expenses rose by approximately 3%, according to the European Commission. Rising fuel prices and persistent driver shortages continue to push logistics costs up across the publishing sector. Looking to the future, publishers must adapt to the new digital world. The gradual slump in print media means publishers must develop their digital presence to supplement their print publications. Still, publishing companies face growing pressure as more people turn to self-publishing platforms and social-focused news channels, bypassing traditional publishers. This will prompt companies to expand into multimedia like podcasts, video journalism, and interactive graphics to diversify content formats and reach younger demographics. These trends increasingly erode established income sources like print sales and conventional advertising. As a result, the industry will likely see revenue remain strained for several years ahead. Industry revenue is forecast to grow at a compound annual rate of 0.1% over the five years through 2030, reaching €103 billion.
