Based on the observations of sea ice extent and types over the last 30 years, this map shows how frequently sea ice has been present and what is the most likely predominant ice type and where. Sea ice is any form of ice that is found at sea and has originated from the freezing of seawater. The ice type gives an indication of the thickness of sea ice such as new ice, grey ice, grey-white ice, first year ice, and old ice. Ice represents a danger for navigation. Information on sea ice is essential in estimating transportation costs, and what type of vessel is appropriate. This map shows the typical sea ice types at the end of the summer melt season (September 10) as well as frequency of sea ice on that date. The frequency of sea ice indicates how often sea ice has been present on September 10 over the last 30 years.

    Description

Container freight rates oscillated dramatically between January 2023 and July 2025. Freight rates slumped to their lowest level on the 26th of October 2023, when the going rate for a 40-foot container was only ***** U.S. dollars. Since then, the global freight rate has significantly increased, hitting over ***** U.S. dollars in July 2024, the highest value on record. As of July 10, 2025, freight rates decreased to 2,672 U.S. dollars per 40ft container. How did we get here? The global supply chain is a fragile system consisting of numerous links. Disruption to one can send cascading effects down a chain that needs to function properly for the whole system to work. The COVID-19 pandemic turned out to be an event of such a magnitude to either bring to halt whole industries and supply chains, or severely reduce their efficiency. Due to its complexity and transcontinental nature, container shipping was hit especially hard by the COVID-19 pandemic. Since the start of the pandemic, the shipping industry has had to struggle with port closures and congestions, labor shortages, difficulties with capacity utilization, as well as a lack of new shipping containers. In more recent months, the impact of the conflict in the Middle-East between Israel and numerous Islamic nations has had a significant effect on oil exports in the region, further exacerbating an industry in desperate need of recovery. Container carriers profiting While costs of operating a container fleet have increased, the surge in freight rates has not served just to cover rising expenses. Container ship operators had been reporting record-high operating profit margins since the beginning of the pandemic. However, despite these high profit margins, the freight rate increase has had some repercussions. In the second quarter of 2023, main container shipping companies had an average profit margin of *** percent, a decrease of almost ** percent compared to the peak EBIT in the first quarter of 2022. Despite this decrease, some of the carriers are combating this trend by using their previous profits to increase their carrying capacity by buying new containers and ordering new container ships. However, the delivery of these newly ordered ships is still years away.

    Description

In 2024, the farm value of maple syrup in Ontario amounted to 12 Canadian dollars per liter. The farm gate value of one liter of maple syrup in Ontario has fluctuated over the past eighteen years, having hit a high of 15.59 Canadian dollars in 2015. The volume of maple syrup produced in Ontario has also varied quite dramatically in the last few years. What is farm gate value? Farm gate value is the market value of a cultivated product, minus transportation and marketing costs. Farm gate value is generally a lot lower than the retail price of a product which a consumer pays in-store. This is because it does not include costs for packing, shipping, handling, storage, marketing, and profit margins of the involved companies. Canadian maple syrup Maple syrup has long been a part of Canadian culture and a source of national pride. Aboriginal peoples taught early settlers how to produce the syrup. It is now enjoyed in countries all around the world in various forms such as maple sugar, butter and candy. Quebec is quite clearly the home of Canadian maple syrup production. In 2020, they were responsible for over 92 percent of all maple syrup production, whilst Ontario accounted for just over three percent. Canadian production peaked at around 14.3 million gallons in 2020.

    Description

This statistic shows the change in the price of gasoline per liter in selected countries for the period between June 2019 and June 2020. The price changes concern unleaded premium (95 RON) for France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom, and regular unleaded for Canada, Japan, and the United States (AKI 87). RON stands for Research Octane Number, while AKI means Anti-Knock Index. Both represent the most common octane rating in the countries shown. In June 2020, the gasoline price per liter in the U.S. was 23.4 percent lower than it was in June 2019.

    Influences on gasoline prices

The price of gasoline is a frequently discussed issue, and is a part of almost everybody’s life in developed countries. Gasoline prices worldwide are dependent of a number of factors: crude oil prices, costs for processing and distribution, demand, strength of currencies, taxation, and availability. The most influential factor is the crude oil price. This price includes the costs for exploration, extraction, and transport. What the consumer pays in the end is also an issue of national oil pricing policy. Typical regions with high taxes on gasoline are European countries and Japan. Other countries keep consumer prices low by subsidizing the costs for gasoline. Among latter countries are the United States, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Venezuela, Egypt, Malaysia, Bolivia, and others. There are many other factors, however, which directly influence the price of gasoline. Wars, crises, and natural disasters in oil producing regions, for example, can obstruct the production and transportation, and thus cause higher crude oil prices. Last but not least, the end-consumer defines the price through his or her demand. A higher number of people driving cars means higher prices for gasoline, which is often the case in the summer months or holiday seasons.
