    Protein-Protein, Genetic, and Chemical Interactions for Tracy Cai X (2019):AWD regulates timed activation of BMP signaling in intestinal stem cells to maintain tissue homeostasis. curated by BioGRID (https://thebiogrid.org); ABSTRACT: Precise control of stem cell (SC) proliferation ensures tissue homeostasis. In the Drosophila intestine, injury-induced regeneration involves initial activation of intestinal SC (ISC) proliferation and subsequent return to quiescence. These two phases of the regenerative response are controlled by differential availability of the BMP type I receptor Thickveins (Tkv), yet how its expression is dynamically regulated remains unclear. Here we show that during homeostasis, the E3 ubiquitin ligase Highwire and the ubiquitin-proteasome system maintain low Tkv protein expression. After ISC activation, Tkv is stabilized by proteasome inhibition and undergoes endocytosis due to the induction of the nucleoside diphosphate kinase Abnormal Wing Disc (AWD). Tkv internalization is required for the activation of the Smad protein Mad, and for the return to quiescence after a regenerative episode. Our data provide insight into the mechanisms ensuring tissue homeostasis by dynamic control of somatic stem cell activity.

    Description

    Alternate Wetting and Drying (AWD) is a water saving technique thus helping farmers adapt to less water availability, it reduces the methane gas emission in rice production, and it increases/maintains productivity levels. The International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) and partners, are doing several studies to evaluate the feasibility of implementing this technology in Colombia. This necessitates an understanding of economic, climatic, political, agronomic and social considerations. Literature shows how gender roles can influence the adoption of a technology or be affected by the introduction of a new technology. Therefore, a baseline in five departments of Colombia – Tolima, Norte de Santander, Cesar, Córdoba and Casanare, was implemented to identify: a) barriers and motivations of farmers to implement AWD and b) gender roles in decision making over rice production and labor. This last to understand: how might gender impact the adoption of AWD in Colombia? And, how will the adoption of AWD affect the gender division of labor? In order to answer these questions, a household survey with sex-disaggregated information was implemented to 609 households with at least one irrigated rice. The implementation of the survey was supported by Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC), the National Association of Rice in Colombia (FEDEARROZ, by its acronym in Spanish) and the Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS)

    Description

    A water allocation is the percentage of a licensed water user’s entitlement that is credited to their water account for use. We announce allocations each year on 1 July and regularly thereafter until all licence categories in a water source are fully allocated.

    We allocate water using water sharing plans to ensure long-term water security and prioritised access to water across NSW. Allocations vary based on the water available in dams, river flows, and the prevailing catchment and weather conditions. In formal terms, allocations are sometimes known as Available Water Determinations.

    A detailed description of the AWD process is provided on the DPE-Water website and can be accessed here.

    The AWD for Supplementary licence accounts is a separate process and is not dependent on the water available. It is made once at the start of the year and unless there is a management change because of the growth in use strategy, it is maintained at the maximum value prescribed in the plan, which is generally 1 megalitre per share (equivalent to 100% of entitlement).

    The British Antarctic Survey Arctic Whaling Database (BAS-AWD) has at present, has over 11,000 individual records of British whaling voyages to the Greenland Sea and the Davis Strait between 1725 and 1913. Where practical the data analysis has endeavoured to be comprehensive, and as a result the records contain information on the following categories: name and rig of the ship, its classification (condition of hull and rigging), its tonnage, its draft, the port and year the ship was built, its home port, its owner, name of the master, whaling grounds worked, the date of sailing and return, number of bowhead whales, bottlenose whales, narwhals, beluga whales, seals, walrus, and polar bears caught, as well as the weight of whalebone taken, the volume of whale oil and blubber and the volume of seal oil and blubber produced. However, the record-keeping is incomplete as a result not all information within these categories is available for each voyage.
