    Description

As of 2024, Lionel Messi had won the Ballon d'Or more times than any other player in the world, with eight awards in total. His most recent Ballon d’Or was awarded in 2023 following his first ever World Cup win with Argentina. Meanwhile, Messi’s professional rival Cristiano Ronaldo has won the award five times, the last time coming in 2017. Who is Lionel Messi? Born in Rosario in 1987, Lionel Messi is one of the most talented soccer players in the history of the sport. Looking at the teams Messi contributed the most to in terms of trophies, his heroics at Barcelona stand well above the rest. In 2023, Messi signed a two-year contract with American club Inter Miami. His influence was immediately felt online, with Inter Miami’s social media following surging following the announcement of Messi’s imminent arrival. Messi vs. Ronaldo Few can compare to the Argentinian when it comes to ability, but Cristiano Ronaldo is certainly part of the discussion. Ronaldo’s awards are every bit as impressive as Messi’s, with the former having won more UEFA Champions League titles. Moreover, Cristiano Ronaldo is the player with the highest combined social media following worldwide, with around 300 thousand more followers than Messi as of February 2023. Ronaldo was also the highest paid athlete worldwide in the 2023/24 season, earning significantly higher than Messi in terms of salary, but slightly less in endorsements.

    Description

It is widely assumed that celebrities are imbued with political capital and the power to move opinion. To understand the sources of that capital in the specific domain of sports celebrity, we investigate the popularity of global soccer superstars. Specifically, we examine players’ success in the Ballon d’Or – the most high profile contest to select the world’s best player. Based on historical election results as well as an original survey of soccer fans, we find that certain kinds of players are significantly more likely to win the Ballon d’Or. Moreover, we detect an increasing concentration of votes on these kinds of players over time, suggesting a clear and growing hierarchy in the competition for soccer celebrity. Further analyses of support for the world’s two best players in 2016 (Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo) show that, if properly adapted, political science concepts like partisanship have conceptual and empirical leverage in ostensibly non-political contests.

    Description

Since he made his first team debut for FC Barcelona in 2003, Lionel Messi has won numerous trophies for club and country. With the Argentine squad, Messi won the FIFA World Cup in 2022. He was also able to lift the Copa América with his team in 2021.

Elite rivalry There are few players with the accolades to rival Messi’s trophy cabinet and Cristiano Ronaldo stands above the rest. With more than one hundred awards to his name, the Portuguese forward is recognized alongside the Argentinian as being among soccer’s global elite. Their dominance within the sport can be underscored by the number of Ballon D’Or trophies between them. Messi and Ronaldo have won the prestigious award seven and five times, respectively.

    Argentina’s soccer heroes
While Lionel Messi is the all-time leading goal scorer for Argentina, the South American squad has produced many legendary players throughout its history. Notable mentions include Diego Maradona, who won four international trophies with the national team, and Gabriel Batistuta, who is also one of the leading all-time goal scorers at the FIFA World Cup tournaments.

    Description

The two players that walked the most during the 2022 FIFA World Cup group stage were perhaps surprising: rather than goalkeepers or center backs, forwards Robert Lewandowski and Lionel Messi topped the rankings, with the former travelling 5,202 meters at walking pace in his game against Saudi Arabia. Meanwhile, Messi was the only player to appear three times in the top ten, with more than 14 kilometers covered at walking speed during his first three games.

Why does Messi walk so much? While Messi is nearing the end of his career as a player, this is likely not why he walks so much. In fact, the distance he walks was also noticed during his time at Barcelona. It has been suggested that through biding his time and patiently reading the game, Messi occupies valuable space on the pitch for his team, opens up room for his teammates, and carefully chooses opportunities to attack. As one of the 2022 World Cup’s top goal scorers, it is a style of play he uses to great effect.

Has Messi ever won the World Cup? The number of trophies won by Lionel Messi across his career is impressive, with the Argentinian winning more than most players can dream of. His haul includes four Champions League titles and a record seven Ballon d’Or awards. He was finally able to add a World Cup medal to his collection in 2022, after inspiring Argentina to victory against France in the final.
