Short-term business statistics (STS) give information on a wide range of economic activities. All STS data are index data. Additionally, annual absolute values are released for building permits indicators. Percentage changes are also available for each indicator: Infra-annual percentage changes - changes between two consecutive months or quarters - are calculated on the basis of non-adjusted data (prices) or calendar and seasonally adjusted data (volume and value indicators) and year-on-year changes - comparing a period to the same period one year ago - are calculated on the basis of non-adjusted data (prices and employment) or calendar adjusted data (volume and value indicators).

In 2008, the Administrative Office of the United States Courts (AOUSC) began implementing the NewSTATS (New Streamline Timely Access to Statistics) Project with respect to bankruptcy data. The project's goals were to modernize the system for collecting, processing, analyzing, and reporting statistics of the federal court system. Based on the records for bankruptcy cases in NewSTATS, a data base for internal use in the Research Division of the Federal Judicial Center has been created. That data base is the Bankruptcy Petition NewSTATS Snapshots [BPNS] Data Base.
The number of registered company insolvencies in January 2024 was 1,769, 5% higher than in the same month in the previous year (1,685 in January 2023). This was higher than levels seen while the Government support measures were in place in response to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and also higher than pre-pandemic numbers.
The company insolvencies consisted of 339 compulsory liquidations, 1,294 creditors’ voluntary liquidations (CVLs), 120 administrations and 16 company voluntary arrangements (CVAs). CVL numbers were lower than in January 2023, while compulsory liquidation and administration numbers were higher.
For individuals, the total number of insolvencies in January 2024 was 8,089, 4% higher than in the same month in the previous year (7,756 in January 2023).
The individual insolvencies consisted of 768 bankruptcies, 2,793 debt relief orders (DROs) and 4,528 individual voluntary arrangements (IVAs). The higher number of individual insolvencies compared to January 2023 was driven by a 60% increase in the number of DROs and a 20% increase in the number of bankruptcies, while the number of IVAs was 16% lower. IVA numbers in 2023 were lower than in 2022, which saw a record high annual number. DRO and bankruptcy numbers in 2023 were higher than in 2022, although the number of bankruptcies remained well below pre-2020 levels.
There were 8,356 Breathing Space registrations in January 2024, which is 10% higher than the number registered in January 2023. 8,232 were Standard breathing space registrations, which is 10% higher than in January 2023, and 124 were Mental Health breathing space registrations, which is 27% higher than the number in January 2023.

This publication relates to individual insolvency only. Statistics relating to company insolvency can be found on the "https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/company-insolvency-statistics-releases" class="govuk-link">company insolvency releases page. These new monthly publications contain some additional information that was previously only released quarterly, such as seasonally adjusted numbers and rates of insolvency per 10,000 companies. This is in accordance with the plans announced following a "https://www.gov.uk/government/consultations/consultation-on-changes-to-insolvency-service-official-statistics" class="govuk-link">user consultation. After seasonal adjustment, 8,708 individuals entered insolvency in England & Wales in March 2024. This was 19% lower than in February 2024 and 9% lower than in March 2023.
The individual insolvencies consisted of 681 bankruptcies, 2,628 debt relief orders (DROs) and 5,399 individual voluntary arrangements (IVAs). The number of IVAs registered in March was similar to numbers seen over the past 12 months. DRO numbers were slightly lower than the record high monthly numbers seen in the second half of 2023, but remained high compared to historical levels. The number of bankruptcies was similar to the past nine months and slightly higher than in March 2023. However, bankruptcy numbers remained at about half of pre-2020 levels.
In the 12 months ending 31 March 2024, one in 470 adults in England & Wales entered insolvency (a rate of 21.3 per 10,000 adults). This is lower than the individual insolvency rate of 24.3 per 10,000 adults (1 in 412) who entered insolvency in the 12 months ending 31 March 2023.
There were 7,710 Breathing Space registrations in March 2024. This is 7% lower than in March 2023.
