    Description

Between 2001 and 2006, Canada’s population grew by 5.4%. Only two provinces, Alberta and Ontario and three territories registered growth rates above the national average. The three Maritime provinces (Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick) had the smallest population growth, while Newfoundland and Labrador and Saskatchewan experienced population declines. In 2006, about 21.5 million people, almost two-thirds of Canada’s population lived in 33 census metropolitan areas (CMAs). Between 2001 and 2006, the population of these CMAs climbed 6.9%, faster that the national average. Barrie registered the fastest population growth of any CMA (19.2%), followed by Calgary (13.4%), Oshawa (11.6%) and Edmonton (10.4%).

    Measurement technique
The data have been collected by visually applying an interpretive rule, beginning with the first observation in 1852. That rule is to assess ice on (freeze date) and ice off (thaw date) as observed from the shore of Kempenfelt Bay at the City of Barrie (44.3904° N, 79.6911° W). This refers to ice in situ; for instance, if the ice thaws in the spring but ice from the east is blown back in (a rare event), the first ice thaw date is used. Older values were extracted from local newspaper records, and newer values (beginning in the mid-twentieth century) were recorded by Robert Sarjeant (until the 1990s) and then Alex Mills (since the 1990s).
    Description

Lake Simcoe is a large lake at 744 square km. This ice record is from the west end of Kempenfelt Bay at the City of Barrie. Lake Simcoe had a robust ice harvesting business until the early years of the twentieth century and it has long hosted a large ice fishing community, although this has shrunk in the twenty-first century. The first part of the ice record was assembled in the early or mid-twentieth century by accessing the published ice-on and ice-off dates from reports in local newspapers, back to the mid-nineteenth century. Thereafter, it was added to year-by-year by local citizens under the leadership of Bob Sarjeant in the latter part of the twentieth century and then Alex Mills in the twenty-first century. During this period, the population of the City of Barrie, and hence the city itself, has grown steadily: about 16,000 in 1950 to about 150,000 in 2020.
