    Description

In 2024, the total gross domestic product (GDP) of the Guangdong - Hong Kong - Macao Greater Bay Area amounted to more than two trillion U.S. dollars. That year, the GDP of the city of Shenzhen alone amounted to around 517 billion U.S. dollars, ranking first among cities in the Greater Bay Area. The Greater Bay Area in China The Guangdong - Hong Kong - Macao Greater Bay Area is an economic zone comprised of the two special administrative regions Hong Kong and Macao and nine cities of Guangdong province in mainland China, namely Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Zhuhai, Foshan, Zhongshan, Dongguan, Huizhou, Jiangmen, and Zhaoqing. The concept of the Greater Bay Area has been formulated by the Chinese government to further integrate Macao and Hong Kong into the Chinese mainland and to boost the economy of the cities in the Pearl River Delta. In the 1980s and 1990s, the Pearl River Delta had been one of the prime regions for economic development, but in recent years it has lost ground to the Yangtze River Delta in East China, the largest of the economic macro-regions in China. A development plan for the Greater Bay Area, which was initiated in 2017 and further elaborated thereafter, aims at developing the region into the world's largest and economically most successful Bay Area. GDP development in the Greater Bay Area In 2022, the GDP of the Greater Bay Area cities was still affected by the coronavirus pandemic and decreased slightly in U.S. dollar terms compared to the previous year. However, the development was uneven, with some of the cities on the mainland experiencing strong economic growth, while GDP growth in Hong Kong and Macau still suffered significantly from the pandemic. In 2024, per capita GDP in the Greater Bay Area ranged at about 23,783 U.S. dollars, which was one of the highest values in China. However, per capita GDP in Hong Kong and Macao is still considerably higher then in the neighboring cities on the mainland.

    Description

The Department of Housing (DOH) collects data on the number of households that have remained sheltered or stable and/or have received support with their basic needs through federal and state funded programs. HUD categorizes these programs as: Housing Development and Minor Home Repair Public Facilities, Micro-Enterprise and Economic Development, General Public Services, Fair Housing, Core Service Agencies and Shelters. The State categorizes these programs generally as serving persons experiencing or at risk of experiencing homelessness. Subgrantees that administer these programs use the online service platform, City Data Services, to report quarterly updates including the number and general demographic of clients served by each program. At the end of the year, the data is aggregated into an annual report that is submitted to HUD in the form of a Consolidated Annual Performance and Evaluation Report (CAPER) through their online portal, IDIS, and through other reporting tools for the State. These annual reports allow DOH to gain a full scope of clients served, identify specific program outcomes and highlights other work engaged in during a specific program year. Additionally, the data in this report is then disaggregated to show 2) The demographics (race/ethnicity) of those benefitting from the program, which can be compared to the overall County demographics. The granularity of the data makes the racial, spatial, income, and gender disparities that too often negatively impact households’ housing status apparent. Since these data show services provision at the individual level, publication of these measures will inform the community of the scale, cost, and trade-offs of addressing housing related challenges in the Bay area.

In addition to the distribution of need, these data show how DOH and its subgrantees have directed a variety of resources to support multiple individuals across San Mateo County in 2024. In recent years, DOH has seen a continued decrease in federal funding that is made available to local jurisdictions and governments. To stabilize this decline, DOH has leveraged state Permanent Local Housing Allocation (PLHA) funds to meet community needs and is being reported in this data. The data reflects that approximately 40% of the individuals that were served in 2024 will be at or below 30% of the Area Median Income (AMI). Further highlighting the need for services among low and extremely low-income individuals in the County. Additionally, the Hispanic population in County accounts for 25% of the total population, but the 2023 data shows that over 50% of individuals served identified as Hispanic. This data is representative of individuals who identify with one Race, as well as also identifing as Hispanic. Providing specific counts will enable San Mateo County community members to better understand the decision-making process and equity impacts of DOH, stimulating equity, accountability, and engagement. The global developer population is expected to reach 28.7 million people by 2024, an increase of 3.2 million from the number seen in 2020. According to the source, much of this growth is expected to occur in China, where the growth rate is between six percent to eight percent heading up to 2023. How much do software developers earn in the U.S.? Software developers work within a wide array of specialties, honing their skills in different programming languages, techniques, or in disciplines such as design. The average salary of U.S.-based designers working in software development reached 108 thousand U.S. dollars as of June 2021, while this figure climbs to 165 thousand U.S. dollars for engineering managers. Salaries are highly dependent on location, however, with an entry-level developer working in the San Francisco/Bay area earning an average of 44.79 percent more than their counterparts starting out in Austin. JavaScript and HTML/CSS still the most widely used languages While programming languages continue to emerge or fall out of favor, JavaScript and HTML/CSS are mainstays of the coding landscape. In a global survey of software developers, over 60 percent of respondents reported using JavaScript, and HTML/CSS. SQL, Python, and Java rounded out the top five.
