Belgium's share of the population without access to a bank account decreased to a new low in 2021, according to a three-year survey. The decrease seemed especially fueled by the increase of the "unbanked" population - or those who did not have access to the services of a bank or another, similar financial organization - among the richest respondents. The share of respondents who were classified under the poorest 40 percent of the country, for example, grew from 1.1 percent in 2017 to 22 percent in 2021. The source does not mention whether the figures were rounded.

To measure the three variables, namely (a) male population, (b) female population and (b) total population, we initially analyzed and categorized the data for each of the age groups. For age groups we divided it into roughly a 5 year bucket for ages between 0 and 85. For over 85, we aggregated data into a single group for all ages. Description
    About this dataset

    Context

The dataset tabulates the data for the Belgium, WI population pyramid, which represents the Belgium population distribution across age and gender, using estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey (ACS) 2018-2022 5-Year Estimates. It lists the male and female population for each age group, along with the total population for those age groups. Higher numbers at the bottom of the table suggest population growth, whereas higher numbers at the top indicate declining birth rates. Furthermore, the dataset can be utilized to understand the youth dependency ratio, old-age dependency ratio, total dependency ratio, and potential support ratio.

    Key observations

    • Youth dependency ratio, which is the number of children aged 0-14 per 100 persons aged 15-64, for Belgium, WI, is 18.5.
    • Old-age dependency ratio, which is the number of persons aged 65 or over per 100 persons aged 15-64, for Belgium, WI, is 41.1.
    • Total dependency ratio for Belgium, WI is 59.6.
    • Potential support ratio, which is the number of youth (working age population) per elderly, for Belgium, WI is 2.4.

    Description
    About this dataset

    Context

The dataset tabulates the Belgium population over the last 20 plus years. It lists the population for each year, along with the year on year change in population, as well as the change in percentage terms for each year. The dataset can be utilized to understand the population change of Belgium across the last two decades. For example, using this dataset, we can identify if the population is declining or increasing. If there is a change, when the population peaked, or if it is still growing and has not reached its peak. We can also compare the trend with the overall trend of United States population over the same period of time.

    Key observations

In 2023, the population of Belgium was 348, a 1.14% decrease year-by-year from 2022. Previously, in 2022, Belgium population was 352, a decline of 0.28% compared to a population of 353 in 2021. Over the last 20 plus years, between 2000 and 2023, population of Belgium decreased by 108. In this period, the peak population was 464 in the year 2003. The numbers suggest that the population has already reached its peak and is showing a trend of decline. Source: U.S. Census Bureau Population Estimates Program (PEP).

    Description

In 2023, the population of Belgium numbered around 11.7 million. Most of these inhabitants lived in the Dutch-speaking Flemish Region, which was home to nearly half of Belgium’s population. The Walloon Region, broadly in line with the French-speaking part of Belgium, numbered roughly 3.68 million inhabitants, and another 1.24 million lived in Brussels and the surrounding areas (which are bilingual).

     Population density by region

Despite having the lowest number of inhabitants, the Brussels-Capital Region had the highest population density, at nearly 7,400 inhabitants per square kilometer in 2017. By comparison, this was less than 500 inhabitants in Flanders and just 214 in Wallonia.

    GDP per region

Wallonia was not just the region with the lowest number of inhabitants per square kilometer, it also had the lowest GDP per capita. In 2019, the most recent available year, GDP per capita reached 30,236 euros in this region. In contrast, GDP per capita was nearly 2.5 times as high in Brussels, at 71,412 euros per capita.

Population Over 65 Years, Population Under 18 Years, Population Between 18 and 64 Years, Percent of Total Population for Age Groups
    Measurement technique
The data presented in this dataset is derived from the latest U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey (ACS) 2018-2022 5-Year Estimates. To measure the two variables, namely (a) population and (b) population as a percentage of the total population, we initially analyzed and categorized the data for each of the age cohorts. For age cohorts we divided it into three buckets Children ( Under the age of 18 years), working population ( Between 18 and 64 years) and senior population ( Over 65 years).
