In 2025, Texas A&M University-College Station was ranked as the best distance learning institution in the United States, with 40 percent of its students enrolled online. Florida International University, University of Florida, Arizona State University Digital Immersion, and University of Arizona rounded out the top five.

This dataset was an inspiration to me to analytically find the best value Master's programs in data science given the statistics and rankings of each respective university. I acquired a majority of this data through Forbes. Though this data doesn't entirely go through every university from last year's ranking system, I went through each schools webpages through the top 250 universities to find the best value programs and if they offered a Data Science MS. I hope you use this data to make the best decision for yourself and make a respectable upgrade in your career as a Data Scientist.

NOTE: Some of the metrics are skewed for my usage i.e. I am a citizen in New York State and the cost of public universities in NY will be lesser than if you did not come from New York.

I also set a standard of 3.0 as a minimum GPA to be admitted to programs if a university did not provide a minimum GPA to be admitted.

Contents of the Dataset

The dataset includes the following columns:

• course_status: Whether the course is currently available (On-Demand or Finished).
• pricing: Indicates whether the course is free, paid, or includes options like “free to audit”.
• duration_in_hours: Estimated number of hours required to complete the course.
• rating: The average user rating of the course, typically on a scale of 0 to 5.
• reviews: The total number of reviews submitted by users.
• best_of_all_time: A boolean field (true or false) indicating whether the course is included in Class Central’s "Best of All Time" list.

Data Source and Collection

All course data was scraped from the publicly accessible parts of Class Central (https://www.classcentral.com) — a platform that aggregates and organizes online course listings from top providers around the world.

The scraping process adhered strictly to ethical practices:

• ✔️ Robots.txt Compliant: Only URLs permitted by robots.txt were visited.
• ✔️ No API or backend access: No APIs or restricted endpoints were used — only publicly available HTML content was parsed.
• ✔️ Respectful scraping speed: A respectful delay was maintained between requests to avoid overloading the servers.
• ✔️ No login or authentication: No user accounts, cookies, or tokens were used to access data.
• ✔️ Only public metadata: Course titles, descriptions, and ratings are available directly on the public course pages.

No proprietary or hidden information has been extracted. The intent is to support academic and non-commercial research in the field of edtech.
