    Description

Cambridge was the fastest growing city in the United Kingdom between 2013 and 2023, with its population increasing by 17.3 percent. Exeter, Milton Keynes, and Peterborough also grew quite fast, with their populations increasing by 15.2 percent, 14.9 percent, and 14 percent, respectively. Largest UK urban areas When looking at cities defined by their urban agglomerations, as of 2023, London had approximately 9.65 million people living there, far larger than any other city in the United Kingdom. The urban agglomeration around the city of Birmingham had a population of approximately 2.67 million, while the urban areas around Manchester and Leeds had populations of 2.79 and 1.92 million respectively. London not only dominated other UK cities in terms of its population, but in its importance to the UK economy. In 2023, the gross domestic product of Greater London was approximately 569 billion British pounds, compared with 101 billion for Greater Manchester, and 85 billion in the West Midlands Metropolitan Area centered around Birmingham. UK population growth In 2023, the overall population of the United Kingdom was estimated to have reached approximately 68.3 million, compared with around 58.9 million in 2000. Since 1970, 2023 was also the year with the highest population growth rate, growing by 0.98 percent, and was at its lowest in 1982 when it shrank by 0.12 percent. Although the UK's birth rate has declined considerably in recent years, immigration to the UK has been high enough to drive population growth in the UK, which has had a positive net migration rate since 1994.

    Description

The urban areas geography consists of major urban agglomerations, cities, and smaller towns defined in terms of their physical extent rather than by any administrative boundaries Source: Census 2001 / Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (ODPM) Publisher: Nomis Geographic coverage: England and Wales Time coverage: 2001 Notes: Urban areas have been defined starting with the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister's areas of urban land use - areas in England and Wales of at least 20 hectares in extent identified using a tangible bricks-and-mortar approach. Major urban areas and others with more than one central focus are divided where possible to produce figures about localities within them. Previously separate urban areas, where urban land has merged, are also recognised by subdivisions where possible. Subdivisions often follow the boundaries of local authorities existing before reorganisation in 1974, or the boundaries of current authorities within urban areas.

    Description

Rural Urban ClassificationThe 2021 RUC is a statistical classification to provide a consistent and standardised method for classifying geographies as rural or urban. This is based on address density, physical settlement form, population size, and Relative Access to Major towns and cities (populations of over 75,000 people). The classification is produced by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) with advice from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), the Welsh Government and colleagues from the Government Geography Profession (GGP).This is 2021 rural-urban classification (RUC) of 2024 Local Authority Districts in England and Wales. This means that the 2021 RUC methodology has been applied to the 2024 LAD boundaries. LAD classifications are divided into four categories based on their populations:1. Majority Rural: had at least 50% of their population residing in Rural OAs2. Intermediate Rural: 35-50% rural population3. Intermediate Urban: 20-35% rural population4. Urban: 20% or less of the population lived in rural OAs.Each 2024 LAD category is split into one of two Relative Access categories, using the same data as the 2021 Output Area RUC. If more than 50% of a LAD population lives in ‘Nearer a major town or city’ OAs, it is deemed ‘nearer a major town or city’; otherwise, it is classified as ‘further from a major town or city’. Where data is unavailable for Super Output Area geographies, it may be appropriate for users to undertake analysis at the LAD level. At this level, the categorisation works slightly differently in that most areas will include a mix of both rural and urban areas - so the LA RUC categorisation is a reflection of this. A statistical geography may contain substantial portions of open countryside but still be given an ‘Urban’ classification if the majority of the population within the area live in settlements that are urban in nature. Users should take this into consideration to ensure correct interpretations of any analysis of RUC LAD categories.

    Description

This data collection consists of photographs of key locations used for fieldwork in Bombay(59), Lagos(10) and Los Angeles(2). In Bombay there are photographs of key districts such as Andheri, Colaba, Mahim and Mira Road, along with up-state water supply infrastructure such as Modak Sagar. In Lagos there are photographs of Ajegunle, Amukoko, Oshodi and other areas including images of inadequate water supply arrangements and poor waste collection services. In Los Angeles there are images of the LA river which was transformed in the New Deal era into a waste water channel.

This three year project investigates the relationship between water and cities in the modern era. The project explores a series of themes covering political, cultural, economic and technical dimensions to the development of urban infrastructure for water supply in large metropolitan areas.
The main outcome will be a book on the cultural history of water to be aimned across a range of disciplines including urban planners, geographers and other readers interested in the complexities of physical infrastructure and urban design.

Urban environmental themes are now the focus of vibrant international debates ranging across a whole spectrum of disciplines from architecture and civil engineering to sociology and human geography. The conceptual starting point for this project will be a critical exploration of the newly emerging concept of cyborg urbanization through the multi-faceted relationship between water and urban space. Water possesses its own bio-physical properties but is simultaneously shaped by political , cultural and scientific aspects of its interaction with human societies. The study of water allows us rich insights into the production of urban space and the reconfiguration of relations between nature and society in the modern era.

Priority Places for England There is now a new version of this dataset available, please see: Priority Places for England: 2016. The data was used as a targeting dataset for the English Woodland Grant Scheme Woodland Creation Grant from 2012/13. The Forestry Commission identified Priority Places for England (PPE) areas based on data that includes populations, deprivation indices and existing public access provision. Methodology summary: Census Output Areas with usual resident population (minus prison and MOD population) were identified. Those Census Output Areas within urban areas (>10,000 population) that are also within the 40% most deprived areas in England were identified. These areas were buffered by 4km to create the PPE boundaries in this dataset. Further details can be requested from the data custodian. Woodland Creation Grant schemes that fell within the boundaries of the PPE data were potentially eligible for an Additional Contribution of grant aid.
