In 2023, there were around 1.5 billion people worldwide who spoke English either natively or as a second language, slightly more than the 1.1 billion Mandarin Chinese speakers at the time of survey. Hindi and Spanish accounted for the third and fourth most widespread languages that year.

Languages in the United States The United States does not have an official language, but the country uses English, specifically American English, for legislation, regulation and other official pronouncements. The United States is a land of immigrations and the languages spoken in the United States vary as a result of the multi-cultural population. The second most common language spoken in the United States is Spanish or Spanish Creole, which over 41 million people spoke at home in 2021. There were also 3.5 million Chinese speakers (including both Mandarin and Cantonese),1.7 million Tagalog speakers and 1.5 million Vietnamese speakers counted in the United States that year.

Different languages at home The percentage of people in the United States speaking a language other than English at home varies from state to state. The state with the highest percentage of population speaking a language other than English is California. About 44 percent of California’s population was speaking a language other than English at home in 2021.

The US Census Bureau defines Asian as "A person having origins in any of the original peoples of the Far East, Southeast Asia, or the Indian subcontinent, including, for example, Cambodia, China, India, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Pakistan, the Philippine Islands, Thailand, and Vietnam. This includes people who reported detailed Asian responses such as: Indian, Bangladeshi, Bhutanese, Burmese, Cambodian, Chinese, Filipino, Hmong, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Laotian, Malaysian, Nepalese, Pakistani, Sri Lankan, Taiwanese, Thai, Vietnamese, Other Asian specified, Other Asian not specified.". 2020 Census block groups for the Wichita / Sedgwick County area, clipped to the county line. Features were extracted from the 2020 State of Kansas Census Block Group shapefile provided by the State of Kansas GIS Data Access and Support Center (https://www.kansasgis.org/index.cfm).Change in Population and Housing for the Sedgwick County area from 2010 - 2020 based upon US Census. Census Blocks from 2010 were spatially joined to Census Block Groups from 2020 to compare the population and housing figures. This is not a product of the US Census Bureau and is only available through City of Wichita GIS. Please refer to Census Block Groups for 2010 and 2020 for verification of all data Standard block groups are clusters of blocks within the same census tract that have the same first digit of their 4-character census block number. For example, blocks 3001, 3002, 3003… 3999 in census tract 1210.02 belong to Block Group 3. Due to boundary and feature changes that occur throughout the decade, current block groups do not always maintain these same block number to block group relationships. For example, block 3001 might move due to a change in the census tract boundary. Even if the block is no longer in block group 3, the block number (3001) will not change. However, the identification string (GEOID20) for that block, identifying block group 3, would remain the same in the attribute information in the TIGER/Line Shapefiles because block identification strings are always built using the decennial geographic codes.Block groups delineated for the 2020 Census generally contain between 600 and 3,000 people. Local participants delineated most block groups as part of the Census Bureau's Participant Statistical Areas Program (PSAP). The Census Bureau delineated block groups only where a local or tribal government declined to participate or where the Census Bureau could not identify a potential local participant.A block group usually covers a contiguous area. Each census tract contains at least one block group and block groups are uniquely numbered within census tract. Within the standard census geographic hierarchy, block groups never cross county or census tract boundaries, but may cross the boundaries of county subdivisions, places, urban areas, voting districts, congressional districts, and American Indian, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian areas.Block groups have a valid range of 0 through 9. Block groups beginning with a zero generally are in coastal and Great Lakes water and territorial seas. Rather than extending a census tract boundary into the Great Lakes or out to the 3-mile territorial sea limit, the Census Bureau delineated some census tract boundaries along the shoreline or just offshore.

As of 2020, there were approximately 6.3 million veterans of the United States military still alive who served during the period of the Vietnam War from 1964 to 1975. Around 8.75 million service personnel served during the war, with 40% of those stationed in Vietnam and the surrounding Southeast Asian countries. Veterans of this conflict reflect the largest cohort of American veterans still alive in terms of service era.

Vietnam War veterans may still suffer from long-term health effects of their service during the war. These range from mental health conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression, to health conditions caused by exposure to toxic chemicals used to clear trees and plants in the Vietnamese jungle during the war. Since the signing of the Vietnam War Veterans Recognition Act of 2017 by President Donald J. Trump, March 29th is designated in the U.S. as National Vietnam War Veterans Day.

    Description

The access to services of banks or similar organizations differs widely worldwide depending on the country. While the whole population in all the Nordic countries, the Netherlands, Australia, and Canada had access to banks (meaning an “unbanked” population of zero percent), countries like Morocco and Vietnam had very high unbanked population. Morocco was the country with the lowest share of bank account owners: less than 30 percent as of 2017. Vietnam, Egypt, and the Philippines were other countries with very high share of unbanked populations.

    Why are people unbanked?

Countries with high shares of unbanked, such as Morocco and the abovementioned, are typically less stable economies with a less developed financial system. It is generally also countries where the citizens have little trust in the banking system. Although these countries have the highest shares of unbanked, the lack of access to services of banks or similar organizations are also present in more developed and financially stable countries as well. In the United States for example, seven percent of the population are unbanked. The most common reason for this, according to U.S. financial households in 2019, was that they had too little money. Financial services often cost money and comes with fees, and without sufficient finances, customers might find it too expensive to open a bank account.

Did the situation change after COVID-19?

It can be seen, at least in Latin American countries, that the share of unbanked population dropped because of the COVID-19 pandemic, as various social benefit programs were introduced to alleviate the economic impact of the pandemic. The change in unbanked population was especially apparent in Brazil, where the share dropped by 73 percent in 2020.

According to a survey in 2022, clothing, footwear, and cosmetic products were the most popular online product categories according to online shoppers in Vietnam. Home appliances ranked second, with 67 percent of respondents having purchased these items online.

Online shopping on the rise in Vietnam

In 2022, around 7.5 percent of total retail sales in Vietnam came from e-commerce, equaling over 16.4 billion U.S. dollars. The growth of this sector has been recorded year-on-year during the last decade in the country. In the same year, over half of the Vietnamese population reported having purchased consumer goods online. Not only are there more people buying products online, but the average amount spent per consumer on e-commerce channels has also been increasing exponentially in Vietnam.

    Vietnam’s internet economy

Vietnam had the third largest internet economy in Southeast Asia, behind Indonesia and Thailand, with a total market value of 23 billion U.S. dollars. While e-commerce accounted for the lion’s share, other segments within the internet economy in the country have been growing fast in recent years. For instance, the COVID-19 pandemic has made online entertainment the new normal for people across different age groups, contributing to the substantial increase in online media market value in Vietnam. Furthermore, after the pandemic, food delivery, ride-hailing, and online travel have continued to benefit from the shift in consumer preferences towards online products and services.

    Description

The Tet Offensive was a military operation undertaken by the forces of North Vietnam and the Viet Cong insurgency during the Lunar New Year festival (Tet) in early 1968. The offensive was a surprise attack which targeted the main population centers throughout South Vietnam, with towns, cities, and military bases being seized by communist forces. While initially successful in taking control of areas of strategic importance, the communist forces were not able to hold these positions for more than a couple of days. As the U.S. and South Vietnamese forces re-grouped to fight off the attack, the North Vietnamese and Viet Cong armies suffered heavy losses.

    Outcome of the offensive

While the number of wounded among the communist forces is unknown, at least 60,000 of their soldiers were killed during the three and a half weeks of the offensive. The U.S. and South Vietnamese forces suffered considerably fewer losses, while the high number of civilian casualties damaged support for the communists among the civilian population of South Vietnam. The decisive repulsion of the attack did little to win support for the war in the United States, as the scale of the offensive was seen as delegitimizing claims that a U.S. victory in the conflict was near at hand. Despite some in the U.S. military command, such as General Westmoreland, wanting to send additional troops in order to strike a decisive blow against the communists, U.S. public opinion had turned decisively against the war effort and a process of 'vietnamization' of the conflict was begun under President Johnson.

In total, the country received around 12.6 million international tourist arrivals in 2023, a fourfold increase from the previous year, after the recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.

    Tourism in Vietnam

Thanks to its long coastline, historical French colonial landmarks, many world heritage sites, and vibrant culture, Vietnam is an emerging destination in Southeast Asia. Since the country opened its door to the world in the late 1980s, tourism has grown in importance as a part of the modern Vietnamese economy. By 2028, the share of direct GDP contribution from the tourism sector is expected to reach over 7.4 percent, with international tourism receipts forecasted to reach over ten billion U.S. dollars that same year. Next to increasing international arrivals, domestic tourism had also been thriving as more Vietnamese could afford to travel.

    Vietnam’s tourism industry rebound post-COVID-19

The COVID-19 pandemic significantly disrupted the growth track of the Vietnamese tourism industry. However, as the pandemic was brought under control and restrictions were lifted, the sector showed signs of rebound and was expected to regain its momentum by 2023. Thanks to the government’s efforts to promote tourism and improve domestic infrastructure, in 2023, the number of international tourist arrivals by all means of transportation went up by approximately 3.4 percent, contributing to the growth in revenue of the country's tourism sector that year.

    Description

Vietnam was colonized by France in the late 19th century (along with Cambodia and Laos as French Indochina), with the French Empire controlling the country as a protectorate from 1883 to 1939, and then as a possession from 1939 to 1945. These territories were occupied by the Japanese during World War II, after which the Vietnamese nationalist leader Ho Chi Minh declared the country's independence in September 1945. France did not recognize the declaration of independence and soon became engaged in a military conflict against the pro-independence forces, which would become known as the First Indochina War (1946-54). The French forces fighting in this conflict came from a diverse range of countries within the French Empire, with the largest number of casualties being among the "regular indigenous" troops - largely ethnic Vietnamese soldiers, who fought on the French side. Casualty statistics for those who fought on the Vietnamese side in the war are not available, however, historians estimate as many as half a million people were killed, including civilians.
The conflict ended in 1954 with the signing of peace agreements at the Geneva Conference, which gave independence to Laos and Cambodia, while Vietnam was partitioned into North Vietnam, controlled by Ho Chi Minh's Communist Party of Vietnam, and South Vietnam, where a regime allied with France and the U.S. was installed. This partition would be the driving cause of the war between North and South Vietnam from 1955, which the United States would join on the South Vietnamese side in 1964.

    Description

The anti-war movement in the United States arose during the 1960s in reaction to U.S. actions in Vietnam and the conscription of soldiers into the military through a draft lottery. The movement encompassed a broad swathe of U.S. society, largely stemming from social movements such as Students for a Democratic Society and the civil rights movement led by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., as well as less conventional sources of dissent (at the time) such as clergy, artists, and military servicemembers themselves.

Protests escalated from 1968 onwards, with particularly notable moments around the 1968 Democratic Party national convention in Chicago, Illinois, and the Kent State University shootings, where four student protesters were killed by National Guard members. Media coverage of events such as the My Lai massacre in 1968, where around 400 unarmed Vietnamese villagers were killed by U.S. soldiers, further galvanized public opinion against the war and spurred on protests.
