    At over 155 million gallons, Californians drank far more wine than any other state in 2021. Florida, which ranked second, consumed roughly half that amount.

    Wine consumption by category Approximately 90 percent of the wine consumed in the United States was table wine. This type of wine is non-sparkling, quite affordable, and suitable for drinking with a meal. The second-most commonly enjoyed type of wine was Champagne and sparkling, which accounted for a consumption share of nearly ten percent that year. Vermouth and aperitif wines were consumed the least by Americans.

    In 2016, Americans drank about 949 million gallons of wine, an increase from the previous year when wine consumption amounted to 922 million gallons. This type of wine has a low volume of alcohol content and is normally served along with food, hence the name “table” wine. Between 2014 and 2015, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon were the most purchased wines among U.S. consumers. Chardonnay, a type of white wine, originated from Burgundy, France. It is traditionally paired with fish and chicken dishes. Franzia, Barefoot and Sutter Home were the leading table wine brands in 2021. The Franzia brand, which is known for its box wines, sold more than 12 million 9-liter cases that period. However, the Barefoot brand, which is produced in California, held the largest share of the table wine market. In 2020, the majority of U.S. wine sales stemmed from off-premise outlets. Over 309 million cases of wine were sold off-premises that year. Groceries were the primary wine distribution channel in 2014, followed by liquor stores.
