    Description

In 2021 Binance's cryptocurrency reached a market cap of more than 90 billion U.S. dollars twice, after being worth less than 7 billion in 2020. Indeed, the digital coin's market cap rally in 2021 places it in the top three of cryptocurrencies with the highest market cap. The latest increase follows after the BNB price increased due to speculation that the demand for the coin would increase as Binance created a one billion U.S. dollar fund for new DeFi (decentralized finance) applications to be built within their own blockchain - called Binance Smart Chain or BSC.

    Description

The price of the native coin from BNB Chain (formerly BSC) grew by 50 percent in late 2021 but was much lower in 2022. On July 22, 2025, for example, a single BNB coin was worth more than 766.4 U.S. dollars - a value that is very different from the all-time high of 766.4 U.S. dollars in November 2021. Regardless, Binance Coin ranked in the top 10 most expensive cryptocurrencies in 2022. Noticeable is that the price increase of BNB in November 2021 coincides with a similar price change for Ethereum (ETH), a cryptocurrency where BNB initially originated in 2017 before coming to its own years later.BNB's history: From a reward token in 2017 to an ecosystem after 2019As the name suggests, Binance Coin, or BNB, originally started as an extension of the Binance.com trading platform, the most used cryptocurrency exchange in the world. It initially functioned on the Ethereum blockchain network as an ERC-20 token, offering incentives to owners like reduced trading fees, affiliate rewards, or a lottery ticket system ('Launchpad') that let users invest in new, Binance-selected crypto projects. In 2019, however, BNB moved away from the Ethereum network and migrated to Binance's self-developed blockchain: Binance Smart Chain, or BSC (called BNB Chain since February 2022). Here, BNB started to support a chain that initially did not focus on hosting decentralized apps but focused on high transaction speed and being able to handle large amounts of traffic.DeFi and GameFi: the main segments for BNBBSC, however, made significant strides in 2021, partly due to traffic overload and high gas prices on Ethereum, as well as the growing interest in both Decentralized Finance (DeFI) and NFTs. Much like Cardano, Solana, and Terra, Binance Smart Chain consequently became a valid alternative to Ethereum. The total value locked (TVL) of BNBs blockchain within DeFi, for example, ranked only behind that of Terra and Ethereum in early 2022. Another area where Binance's blockchain and token play a significant role is that of GameFi, or 'play-to-earn' blockchain games that are powered by cryptocurrencies. Some of the more well-known and most popular NFT games, like Alien Worlds and Axie Infinity, run on the blockchain behind BNB.

    Description

Cryptocurrency historical datasets from January 2012 (if available) to October 2021 were obtained and integrated from various sources and Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) including Yahoo Finance, Cryptodownload, CoinMarketCap, various Kaggle datasets, and multiple APIs. While these datasets used various formats of time (e.g., minutes, hours, days), in order to integrate the datasets days format was used for in this research study. The integrated cryptocurrency historical datasets for 80 cryptocurrencies including but not limited to Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), Binance Coin (BNB), Cardano (ADA), Tether (USDT), Ripple (XRP), Solana (SOL), Polkadot (DOT), USD Coin (USDC), Dogecoin (DOGE), Tron (TRX), Bitcoin Cash (BCH), Litecoin (LTC), EOS (EOS), Cosmos (ATOM), Stellar (XLM), Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC), Uniswap (UNI), Terra (LUNA), SHIBA INU (SHIB), and 60 more cryptocurrencies were uploaded in this online Mendeley data repository. Although the primary attribute of including the mentioned cryptocurrencies was the Market Capitalization, a subject matter expert i.e., a professional trader has also guided the initial selection of the cryptocurrencies by analyzing various indicators such as Relative Strength Index (RSI), Moving Average Convergence/Divergence (MACD), MYC Signals, Bollinger Bands, Fibonacci Retracement, Stochastic Oscillator and Ichimoku Cloud. The primary features of this dataset that were used as the decision-making criteria of the CLUS-MCDA II approach are Timestamps, Open, High, Low, Closed, Volume (Currency), % Change (7 days and 24 hours), Market Cap and Weighted Price values. The available excel and CSV files in this data set are just part of the integrated data and other databases, datasets and API References that was used in this study are as follows: [1] https://finance.yahoo.com/ [2] https://coinmarketcap.com/historical/ [3] https://cryptodatadownload.com/ [4] https://kaggle.com/philmohun/cryptocurrency-financial-data [5] https://kaggle.com/deepshah16/meme-cryptocurrency-historical-data [6] https://kaggle.com/sudalairajkumar/cryptocurrencypricehistory [7] https://min-api.cryptocompare.com/data/price?fsym=BTC&tsyms=USD [8] https://min-api.cryptocompare.com/ [9] https://p.nomics.com/cryptocurrency-bitcoin-api [10] https://www.coinapi.io/ [11] https://www.coingecko.com/en/api [12] https://cryptowat.ch/ [13] https://www.alphavantage.co/ This dataset is part of the CLUS-MCDA (Cluster analysis for improving Multiple Criteria Decision Analysis) and CLUS-MCDAII Project: https://aimaghsoodi.github.io/CLUSMCDA-R-Package/ https://github.com/Aimaghsoodi/CLUS-MCDA-II https://github.com/azadkavian/CLUS-MCDA

    Description

The Bitcoin market, while exhibiting volatility, demonstrates substantial growth potential. Considering the study period of 2019-2033, a base year of 2025, and a forecast period of 2025-2033, we can infer a significant market expansion. While specific market size figures are not provided, the presence of major players like Binance, Coinbase (implied by ANX presence, a Coinbase subsidiary), and others indicates a substantial market capitalization. The high number of companies involved suggests a competitive landscape driving innovation and adoption. Growth drivers likely include increasing institutional investment, regulatory clarity in some regions, growing acceptance as a store of value, and the expanding development of Bitcoin-related applications and services. Trends such as the rise of decentralized finance (DeFi) and the growing interest in Bitcoin's underlying blockchain technology further contribute to market expansion. However, restraints such as regulatory uncertainty in various jurisdictions, price volatility, and potential environmental concerns related to Bitcoin mining present ongoing challenges. We can expect a CAGR exceeding 15% given the inherent growth potential of the crypto market, though this requires more concrete data to accurately reflect. The segmentation details are unknown, but we can assume categories exist based on user type (institutional vs. retail), geographical location, and service offerings (exchanges, custodial services, mining). The future of the Bitcoin market hinges on navigating these challenges while capitalizing on the aforementioned drivers and emerging trends. The historical period (2019-2024) likely saw significant fluctuations mirroring the cyclical nature of cryptocurrency markets. The forecast period (2025-2033) projects continued growth, albeit with varying rates dependent on macroeconomic conditions, technological advancements, and regulatory developments. Key players will continually adapt to these changes, leading to consolidation and innovation within the industry. The regional data, while missing, would likely show varying levels of adoption based on factors such as regulatory frameworks, technological infrastructure, and financial literacy. North America and Europe are expected to hold significant market shares, but regions like Asia and Africa also present potential for considerable growth. Overall, the Bitcoin market presents a complex interplay of opportunity and risk, requiring careful analysis of macroeconomic factors and technological disruptions.

    Description

The share of stablecoins within the overall crypto market was below that of Ethereum (ETH) and Bitcoin (BTC). This would mark a significant rise of the digital asset, as earlier calculations from December 2021 indicated a stablecoin market share of ***** percent. What may play a part in these figures is that "regular" cryptocurrencies such as Ethereum saw a significant decline in price between May and June 2022 - leading to their market cap to decline as well. Fiat-backed stablecoins like Tether, USD Coin and Binance USD, on the other hand, were not as impacted. That said, the crash of algorithmic stablecoin TerraUSD and its token Terra (LUNA) led to much uncertainty on whether non-fiat backed stablecoins could work.

    Description

The cryptocurrency market, valued at $882.9 million in 2025, is projected to experience steady growth, driven by increasing adoption of digital assets for transactions and investments. The Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 3.3% suggests a consistent, albeit moderate, expansion over the forecast period (2025-2033). Key drivers include the growing acceptance of cryptocurrencies as a legitimate form of payment, particularly among younger demographics, and the increasing institutional investment in the sector. Technological advancements, such as improved scalability and enhanced security features, are also contributing to market growth. While regulatory uncertainty and volatility remain significant restraints, the market is gradually maturing, attracting more sophisticated investors and businesses. The market is segmented by application (transactional, investment, and others) and type (Bitcoin, Ether, Litecoin, and others), with Bitcoin and Ether dominating the market share. The geographic distribution shows significant concentration in North America and Europe, though emerging markets in Asia-Pacific are rapidly gaining traction. The competitive landscape is highly fragmented, with major players such as Binance, Coinbase, and Kraken vying for market share. These companies are constantly innovating to enhance their offerings and attract new users. The continued expansion into decentralized finance (DeFi) and the growing adoption of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) further fuels the market’s potential for long-term growth. The forecast for 2033, considering the 3.3% CAGR, points to a market exceeding $1.2 billion. This projection reflects the anticipated ongoing, albeit gradual, adoption of cryptocurrencies by both retail and institutional investors. The relative stability of the market will likely depend on the interplay between regulatory frameworks, technological innovations, and evolving investor sentiment. Increased regulatory clarity in major jurisdictions could significantly accelerate market expansion, while prolonged volatility might cause slower growth. Competition among cryptocurrency exchanges will remain intense, pushing companies to improve security, offer a wider range of services, and enhance the user experience. The continued evolution of blockchain technology and its applications will also play a crucial role in shaping the future of the cryptocurrency market, including the exploration of new use cases beyond investments and payments.

    Description

Out of the big soccer clubs worldwide that offer fan tokens, Paris Saint-Germain's market cap was over 20 million U.S. dollars higher than that of FC Barcelona. Fan tokens from the Catalan club became especially popular in April 2021 after they were listed on crypto trading platform Binance - explaining the sudden growth in market cap around that time. The market cap increase for PSG is less clear, although there have been reports that Argentine soccer star Lionel Messi received "a large amount of" cryptocurrency fan tokens as a signing on fee at the French club. Regardless, fan tokens - or NFTs issued by sports clubs that grant owners special perks or give them (limited) ownership over their favorite team, and can be bought and traded like cryptocurrencies - became increasingly popular in 2021. This development originally started in Italy to spread to Spain and Turkey, with AS Roma and Manchester City becoming the latest clubs to join in this trend.

    Description

Cryptocurrency enjoyed a prosperous year in 2021 as the asset class enjoyed record returns. In 2021, the crypto industry's total market capitalization grew by 187.5%, peaking at around US$3 trillion, with many of the top coins offering four-digit and even five-digit percentage returns. The value of Bitcoin peaked at almost US$65,000 in mid-April 2021 before falling to US$30,000 by June 2021. Today, over 20,000 different cryptocurrencies exist, with some having little to no following while others enjoy immense popularity, like Bitcoin and Ethereum. The tide turned however as the year came to an end as many economies grappled with numerous macroeconomic headwinds. Financial markets were negatively impacted by these headwinds with both stocks and fixed-income assets struggling. Cryptocurrency would not be spared, leading crypto assets like Bitcoin and Ethereum down as much as 50% in the first half of 2022. Market experts speculate that cryptocurrency may fall even lower by year-end 2022 given the uncertainty that has recently plagued the industry following the collapse of one of the largest cryptocurrency exchanges.

The Fall of FTX Prior to November 2022, FTX was recognized as one of the largest cryptocurrency exchanges in the world, gaining immense popularity during its short existence. The exchange was founded in 2019 with Sam Bankman-Fried co-founding and being the largest stakeholder in the company from inception. Mr Bankman-Fried also co-founded Alameda Research 2017, a quantitative cryptocurrency trading firm.
FTX enjoyed a meteoric rise, peaking in 2021 as the company’s valuation reached US$32 billion. The exchange also issued its own cryptocurrency token called FTT. At its peak in 2021, the exchange had over 1 million users and was the third largest crypto exchange by volume with its token FTT reaching a market cap of $9.39 billion. In 2022, as crypto assets struggled, the FTX exchange stood as one of the brighter lights in the sector. As other cryptocurrency exchanges were challenged on many fronts including bankruptcy earlier in the year, the majority owner of FTX came to the rescue offering financial support to several companies including Robinhood and Voyager. Sam Bankman-Fried would soon gain the nickname “Crypto’s White Knight”. FTX's downfall began when CoinDesk, a news site specializing in bitcoin and digital currencies, released a statement on November 2 2022 revealing that Alameda Research Trading firm was heavily invested in FTT, FTX’s own cryptocurrency, which represented around 40% of the trading firm’s asset holdings. This news put Sam in the spotlight and sparked widespread selloffs in digital assets. The story exposed the depth and complexity of the relationship between FTX and Alameda Research, including that FTX was lending significant quantities of its own token FTT to the trading firm to build up the cash levels. Although the company attempted damage control through public reassurances to its customers, it failed to prevent customers from withdrawing their funds. Four days later on November 6 2022, Binance, the world’s largest crypto exchange announced their decision to sell their entire holdings of the FTT tokens worth approximately US$529 million. Binance’s decision to liquidate its position in FTT was based on a risk management strategy following the collapse of the Terra (LUNA) crypto token earlier in 2022. Subsequent to this announcement, withdrawal requests began to rise rapidly and two days later, FTX was faced with a liquidity crisis and stopped paying back customers. While a bail-out was initially offered by Binance, it was rescinded after the necessary due diligence. As a result, eight days after the story broke, on November 11 2022 the company, FTX filed for bankruptcy.

Crypto trader Binance ranked among the largest cryptocurrency exchangers in the world in 2024, with trading volume that was about four times as high as Bybit or OKX. It should be noted that these figures are separate from platforms Binance.US, Binance TR, or Binance.KR. The platform from the Cayman Islands faced investigations from the U.S. SEC, which came to a head in November 2023. Binance did not rank as the most used cryptocurrency exchanges used by consumers in the United States. Binance's settlement with the U.S. In November 2023, Binance agreed to pay a four billion U.S. dollar settlement with United States agencies — one of the biggest corporate fines in U.S. history. The U.S. Department of Justice investigated the platform for years for failure to prevent money laundering and growing crypto theft. The company's founder and CEO Changpeng Zhao pleaded guilty to the charges, agreeing to step down. Zhao would remain as the company's majority shareholder. The U.S. Treasury announced Binance will be subject to five years of monitoring and “significant compliance undertakings, including to ensure Binance’s complete exit from the United States.” Mixed signals from crypto companies The Binance settlement occurred in a month when overall crypto trading volume recorded its highest numbers for all of 2023. One of the main causes is the sudden popularity of FTT, a token released by FTX — the company founded by Sam Bankman-Fried. The developments surrounding Binance caused investors to move away from Binance's stablecoin BNB to the stablecoin from FTX. Earlier in November 2023, however, Coinbase saw its shares fall after announcing its quarterly performance figures.

    Cryptocurrency Exchanges Market Outlook

The global cryptocurrency exchanges market size was valued at approximately $32 billion in 2023 and is expected to reach around $78 billion by 2032, registering a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 10.4% during the forecast period. The growth of this market is primarily driven by increasing adoption of digital currencies, technological advancements in blockchain technology, and growing interest from institutional investors.

The surge in adoption of cryptocurrencies by both retail and institutional investors is a significant factor propelling the market growth. Cryptocurrencies, with Bitcoin and Ethereum leading the charge, have become more accepted as both a medium of exchange and a store of value. This widespread acceptance is driving the need for more advanced and secure cryptocurrency exchanges. The rise in digital literacy among the global population and the increasing willingness of individuals to explore alternative investments also fuel this growth. Additionally, the financial instability caused by geopolitical events and fluctuating fiat currencies has led many to seek refuge in the relatively more stable cryptocurrency market.

Technological advancements in blockchain technology are another major factor driving the market. Improved blockchain protocols and smart contract functionalities are making transactions more secure and transparent, thereby encouraging more users to engage in cryptocurrency trading. Moreover, the development of decentralized finance (DeFi) platforms, which eliminate intermediaries, is compelling more users to shift towards decentralized exchanges. These technological improvements not only enhance security but also contribute to the scalability and efficiency of cryptocurrency exchanges, making them more attractive to both retail and institutional investors.

Institutional interest in cryptocurrencies has grown exponentially over the past few years. Major financial institutions, including banks and hedge funds, are now actively participating in the cryptocurrency market. This institutional influx brings significant capital and liquidity into the market, thus enhancing the overall trading volume and stability. The entry of these large players also adds a layer of credibility to the market, encouraging more retail investors to participate. Regulatory advancements, particularly in regions like North America and Europe, are also creating a more secure framework for institutional investments, thus further stimulating market growth.

As the cryptocurrency market continues to evolve, Non Fungible Token Exchanges are emerging as a significant area of interest. These exchanges facilitate the buying, selling, and trading of NFTs, which are unique digital assets representing ownership of specific items or content on the blockchain. The rise of NFTs has opened new avenues for digital art, collectibles, and even virtual real estate, attracting a diverse range of investors and creators. The integration of NFTs into the broader cryptocurrency ecosystem is driving innovation and expanding the utility of blockchain technology. As more users explore the potential of NFTs, exchanges are adapting to accommodate this growing demand, offering specialized platforms and services to cater to NFT enthusiasts.

Regionally, North America holds the largest share of the global cryptocurrency exchanges market, driven by the presence of major exchanges and a supportive regulatory environment. Asia Pacific is expected to witness the highest growth rate due to the rising popularity of cryptocurrencies in countries like Japan, South Korea, and India. Europe also presents significant growth opportunities with increasing adoption and favorable legislative measures across the region.

    Type Analysis

The cryptocurrency exchanges market can be segmented by type into Centralized, Decentralized, and Hybrid exchanges. Centralized exchanges, which operate similarly to traditional stock exchanges, are currently the most popular. These platforms are favored for their user-friendly interfaces, high liquidity, and robust security measures. However, they are also prone to regulatory scrutiny and hacking risks. Despite these challenges, centralized exchanges continue to dominate the market, with platforms like Coinbase, Binance, and Kraken leading the way.

Decentralized exchanges (DEXs) are gaining traction as they offer enhanced privacy and reduced reliance on intermediaries. Bu

    Bitcoin Exchange Market Outlook

The global Bitcoin exchange market size is projected to grow from USD 4.1 billion in 2023 to approximately USD 12.3 billion by 2032, reflecting a robust CAGR of 13.1% over the forecast period. This growth trajectory is driven by several factors, including increasing adoption of cryptocurrencies, burgeoning interest in decentralized finance (DeFi), and advancements in blockchain technology.

One of the primary growth factors for the Bitcoin exchange market is the increasing acceptance and mainstream adoption of cryptocurrencies by both individuals and institutions. As more people become aware of the benefits of digital currencies, such as lower transaction fees and enhanced security features, the demand for Bitcoin exchanges is expected to rise. Furthermore, institutional investors are increasingly viewing Bitcoin as a legitimate asset class, leading to significant inflows of capital into the cryptocurrency market. Regulatory clarity in various regions is also fostering a conducive environment for Bitcoin exchange growth, reducing the perceived risks associated with cryptocurrency investments.

Another significant driver is the rapid technological advancements in blockchain and related technologies, which underpin Bitcoin exchanges. Innovations such as scalability solutions, improved transaction speeds, and enhanced security protocols are making Bitcoin exchanges more reliable and user-friendly. These technological advancements are attracting a broader user base, including retail investors and traders who seek efficient and secure platforms for cryptocurrency transactions. Moreover, the rise of decentralized finance (DeFi) platforms is providing new opportunities for Bitcoin exchanges, enabling users to engage in a wide range of financial activities without intermediaries.

The proliferation of mobile and internet connectivity has also played a crucial role in the growth of the Bitcoin exchange market. With the increasing penetration of smartphones and high-speed internet, more people can easily access Bitcoin exchanges and participate in cryptocurrency trading. This is particularly significant in developing regions where traditional banking infrastructure may be lacking. Mobile-based Bitcoin exchanges are offering a convenient and accessible means for people to invest in cryptocurrencies, further driving market growth.

As the Bitcoin exchange market continues to expand, innovative financial solutions such as Bitcoin Loan services are emerging, offering new opportunities for both investors and borrowers. Bitcoin Loans allow users to leverage their cryptocurrency holdings as collateral to secure loans, providing liquidity without the need to sell their digital assets. This financial product is gaining traction as it offers a flexible and efficient way for individuals and businesses to access capital. The integration of Bitcoin Loans into the broader financial ecosystem is expected to further drive the adoption of cryptocurrencies, as it provides an alternative to traditional lending mechanisms. By offering competitive interest rates and streamlined processes, Bitcoin Loan services are attracting a diverse range of users, from retail investors to institutional clients, looking to optimize their financial strategies.

In terms of regional outlook, North America currently dominates the Bitcoin exchange market, driven by high adoption rates and favorable regulatory frameworks. The presence of major cryptocurrency exchanges and advanced technological infrastructure also contributes to the region's leadership. However, the Asia Pacific region is expected to exhibit the highest growth rate during the forecast period, fueled by increasing cryptocurrency adoption in countries like Japan, South Korea, and India. The region's tech-savvy population and supportive government policies are further propelling market expansion. Europe and Latin America are also witnessing significant growth, driven by increasing investment in digital currencies and the development of blockchain technologies.
