Fuctional classification is the process by which streets and highways are grouped into classes, or systems, according to the character of traffic service that they are intended to provide. The three primary functional classifications include arterials, collectors, and local roads.

Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras are used across the ring road of Birmingham City Council to identify and register every vehicle that enters the zone 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and 365 days a year. This information is then securely transmitted to a data centre where software determines the compliance of the vehicle based on its emissions profile The table details the indicative location of Birmingham City Council CAZ cameras with the unique camera site name.
