This EnviroAtlas dataset shows the Birmingham, AL EnviroAtlas community boundary. It represents the outside edge of all the block groups included in the EnviroAtlas Community. This dataset was produced by the US EPA to support research and online mapping activities related to EnviroAtlas. This file contains the digital vector boundaries for Middle layer Super Output Areas (LSOAs), in Birmingham for the 2021 Census geography.The boundaries available are: Generalised Clipped (BGC) - Generalised to 20m and clipped to the coastline (Mean High Water mark) and more generalised than the BFE boundaries.Middle layer Super Output AreasMiddle layer Super Output Areas (MSOAs) are made up of groups of Lower layer Super Output Areas (LSOAs), usually four or five. They comprise between 2,000 and 6,000 households and have a usually resident population between 5,000 and 15,000 persons. MSOAs fit within local authorities.Outputs from Census 2021 are for 2021 MSOAs and are made up of unchanged 2011 MSOAs and new 2021 MSOAs.Contains both Ordnance Survey and ONS Intellectual Property Rights.TopoJSON Shapefile for Power BIOn the Export tab you will find a file under the Alternative exports. This file contains the digital vector boundaries for Output Areas (OAs), in Birmingham for the 2021 Census geography.The boundaries available are: Generalised Clipped (BGC) - Generalised to 20m and clipped to the coastline (Mean High Water mark) and more generalised than the BFE boundaries.Output AreasOutput Areas (OAs) are the lowest level of geographical area for census statistics and were first created following the 2001 Census. Using Census 2021 data, some changes were made to 2011 OAs as a result of population and household changes since 2011. Additionally, around 200 OA boundaries were selectively realigned to ward boundaries.2011 OAs that were still made up of between 40 and 250 households and had a usually resident population between 100 and 625 persons did not change. Otherwise, new 2021 OAs were created by merging or splitting 2011 OAs to make sure they fitted within the population and household thresholds of the unchanged 2011 OAs.There are some exceptions where OAs may have more than 625 people, for example, where there is a large prison.Outputs from Census 2021 are for 2021 OAs and are made up of unchanged 2011 OAs and new 2021 OAs.NoteThe map view is limited to 1,000 datapoints and if unfiltered may not show all points.Contains both Ordnance Survey and ONS Intellectual Property Rights.TopoJSON Shapefile for Power BIOn the Export tab you will find a file under the Alternative exports. From the site: “The Geologic Atlas of the United States is a set of 227 folios published by the U.S. Geological Survey between 1894 and 1945. Each folio includes both topographic and geologic maps for each quad represented in that folio, as well as description of the basic and economic geology of the area. The Geologic Atlas collection is maintained by the Map & GIS Library. The repository interface with integrated Yahoo! Maps was developed by the Digital Initiatives -- Research & Technology group within the TAMU Libraries using the Manakin interface framework on top of the DSpace digital repository software. Additional files of each map are available for download for use in GIS or Google Earth. A tutorial is provided which describes how to download theses files.”

This EnviroAtlas dataset estimates green space along walkable roads. Green space within 25 meters of the road centerline is included and the percentage is based on the total area between street intersections. In this community, green space is defined as Trees & Forest, Grass & Herbaceous, Woody Wetlands, and Emergent Wetlands. In this metric, water is also included in green space. Green space provides valuable benefits to neighborhood residents and walkers by providing shade, improved aesthetics, and outdoor gathering spaces. The Birmingham, AL EnviroAtlas Meter-scale Urban Land Cover (MULC) dataset comprises 2,778 km2 around the city of Birmingham and portions of surrounding counties. The area classified is based on the US Census Bureau's 2010 Urban Area for Birmingham, AL with a 1 km buffer added. This area includes the majority of Jefferson County and a large percentage of Shelby County, as well as very small portions of Bibb, Blount, Chilton, and St. Clair counties. These MULC data and maps were derived from 1-m pixel, four-band (red, green, blue, and near-infrared) leaf-on aerial photography acquired from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) National Agriculture Imagery Program (NAIP) that were collected in summer 2011. LiDAR datasets collected in 2010, 2011 and 2013 were also used to create this MULC. Six land cover classes were mapped: Water, Impervious Surfaces, Soil/Barren, Tree/Forest, Grass/Herbaceous Non-Woody Vegetation, and Wetlands (Woody and Emergent). Wetlands were obtained from the best available existing wetlands data, which was a National Wetlands Inventory (NWI) layer. An analysis of 500 completely random and 95 stratified random photo-interpreted land cover reference points yielded an overall user's accuracy of 83.4% (MAX) and an overall fuzzy user's accuracy of 87.6% (RIGHT) (see confusion matrices below). Point locations within specific tornado paths are included that give detailed survey information gathered from assessment teams in the field. The attribute information includes: Event Date, Survey Date, Damage Indicator, Degree of Damage, EF-Rating at the point location, Wind Speed, and the tornado associated with the survey point. For example, one community may have two commercial districts- Local Commerical and General Commercial. Another community may have three commercial districts- Neighborhood Commercial, Hi-Tech Office, and Retail Commercial. A wide range of uses could be included in these categories, but for the purpose of this feature class, they are all translated into "Commercial/Office." In some cases a category on community's future land use map could not be translated into a single composite category. When this occurred, areas were manually translated into the appropriate generalized category. For example, a Public Lands class on a community's map would be manually translated into the Public/Institutional and Recreation/Conservation composite categories.
