About this dataset

Context

The dataset tabulates the Birmingham population over the last 20 plus years. It lists the population for each year, along with the year on year change in population, as well as the change in percentage terms for each year. The dataset can be utilized to understand the population change of Birmingham across the last two decades. For example, using this dataset, we can identify if the population is declining or increasing. If there is a change, when the population peaked, or if it is still growing and has not reached its peak. We can also compare the trend with the overall trend of United States population over the same period of time.

In 2023, the population of Birmingham was 196,644, a 0.12% decrease year-by-year from 2022. There were approximately 1,202 schools in Birmingham and West Midlands Metropolitan County in 2022/23, compared with 1,204 in the previous year and 1,195 in 2015/16.

There were approximately 28,620 full-time equivalent teachers working at schools in Birmingham and West Midlands County in the 2022/23 academic year, compared with 28,714 in the previous year.

There were approximately 538,290 students attending schools in Birmingham and West Midlands Metropolitan County in 2022/23, compared with 534,177 in the previous year and 503,954 in 2015/16.

The population of the West Midlands Metropolitan County in 2023 was estimated to be approximately 2.98 million, with the overall population divided into seven metropolitan districts. The metropolitan district of Birmingham had the largest population, at 1.16 million, followed by Coventry at 360,702, and Sandwell at 347,551.

In 2023, the population of the United Kingdom reached 68.3 million, compared with 67.6 million in 2022. London’s population growth Throughout the 1980s, the population of London fluctuated from a high of 6.81 million people in 1981 to a low of 6.73 million inhabitants in 1988. During the 1990s, the population of London increased once again, growing from 6.8 million at the start of the decade to 7.15 million by 1999. London's population has continued to grow since the turn of the century, reaching a peak of 8.96 million people in 2019, and is forecast to reach 9.8 million by 2043.
