The DHCS Medi-Cal Birth Statistics tables present the descriptive statistics for California resident births that occurred in a hospital setting, including data on maternal characteristics, delivery methods, and select birth outcomes such as low birthweight and preterm delivery. Tables also include key comorbidities and health behaviors known to influence birth outcomes, such as hypertension, diabetes, substance use, pre-pregnancy weight, and smoking during pregnancy. DHCS additionally presents birth statistics for women participating in the Medi-Cal Fee-For-Service (FFS) and managed care delivery systems, as well as births financed by private insurance, births financed by other public funding sources, and births among uninsured mothers. Medi-Cal data reflect mothers that were deemed as Medi-Cal certified eligible. TwitterThis dataset contains California’s adolescent birth rate (ABR) by county, age group and race/ethnicity using aggregated years 2014-2016. The ABR is calculated as the number of live births to females aged 15-19 divided by the female population aged 15-19, multiplied by 1,000. Births to females under age 15 are uncommon and thus added to the numerator (total number of births aged 15-19) in calculating the ABR for aged 15-19. The categories by age group are aged 18-19 and aged 15-17; births occurring to females under aged 15 are added to the numerator for aged 15-17 in calculating the ABR for this age group. The race and ethnic groups in this table utilized five mutually exclusive race and ethnicity categories. These categories are Hispanic and the following Non-Hispanic categories of Multi-Race, Black, American Indian (includes Eskimo and Aleut), Asian and Pacific Islander (includes Hawaiian) combined, and White. Note that there are birth records with missing race/ethnicity or categorized as “Other” and not shown in the dataset but included in the ABR calculation overall.

Context
The dataset tabulates the data for the California population pyramid, which represents the California population distribution across age and gender, using estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey (ACS) 2018-2022 5-Year Estimates. It lists the male and female population for each age group, along with the total population for those age groups. Higher numbers at the bottom of the table suggest population growth, whereas higher numbers at the top indicate declining birth rates. TwitterThis is a source dataset for a Let's Get Healthy California indicator at https://letsgethealthy.ca.gov/. Infant Mortality is defined as the number of deaths in infants under one year of age per 1,000 live births. Infant mortality is often used as an indicator to measure the health and well-being of a community, because factors affecting the health of entire populations can also impact the mortality rate of infants. Although California’s infant mortality rate is better than the national average, there are significant disparities, with African American babies dying at more than twice the rate of other groups. Data are from the Birth Cohort Files. The infant mortality indicator computed from the birth cohort file comprises birth certificate information on all births that occur in a calendar year (denominator) plus death certificate information linked to the birth certificate for those infants who were born in that year but subsequently died within 12 months of birth (numerator). Studies of infant mortality that are based on information from death certificates alone have been found to underestimate infant death rates for infants of all race/ethnic groups and especially for certain race/ethnic groups, due to problems such as confusion about event registration requirements, incomplete data, and transfers of newborns from one facility to another for medical care. Note there is a separate data table "Infant Mortality by Race/Ethnicity" which is based on death records only, which is more timely but less accurate than the Birth Cohort File. Single year shown to provide state-level data and county totals for the most recent year. Numerator: Infants deaths (under age 1 year). Denominator: Live births occurring to California state residents. Multiple years aggregated to allow for stratification at the county level. For this indicator, race/ethnicity is based on the birth certificate information, which records the race/ethnicity of the mother. The mother can “decline to state”; this is considered to be a valid response. These responses are not displayed on the indicator visualization.

This is the code replication archive for the paper, "The COVID-19 Baby Bump in the United States," published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The underlying natality microdata are restricted, so this archive contains only the code to replicate our analysis.We use natality microdata covering the universe of U.S. births for 2015-2021 and California births from 2015 through February 2023 to examine childbearing responses to the COVID-19 pandemic. We find that 60% of the 2020 decline in U.S. fertility rates was driven by sharp reductions in births to foreign-born mothers although births to this group comprised only 22% of all U.S. births in 2019. This decline started in January 2020. In contrast, the COVID-19 recession resulted in an overall “baby bump” among U.S.-born mothers which marked the first reversal in declining fertility rates since the Great Recession. Births to U.S.-born mothers fell by 31,000 in 2020 relative to a pre-pandemic trend but increased by 71,000 in 2021. The data for California suggest that U.S. births remained elevated through February 2023. The baby bump was most pronounced for first births and women under age 25, suggesting that the pandemic led some women to start families earlier. Above age 25, the baby bump was most pronounced for women ages 30-34 and women with a college education. The 2021-2022 baby bump is especially remarkable given the large declines in fertility rates that would have been projected by standard statistical models.
