    Measurement technique
The data presented in this dataset is derived from the 20 years data of U.S. Census Bureau Population Estimates Program (PEP) 2000 - 2023. To measure the variables, namely (a) population and (b) population change in ( absolute and as a percentage ), we initially analyzed and tabulated the data for each of the years between 2000 and 2023. Description
    About this dataset

    Context

The dataset tabulates the Boise County population over the last 20 plus years. It lists the population for each year, along with the year on year change in population, as well as the change in percentage terms for each year. The dataset can be utilized to understand the population change of Boise County across the last two decades. For example, using this dataset, we can identify if the population is declining or increasing. If there is a change, when the population peaked, or if it is still growing and has not reached its peak. We can also compare the trend with the overall trend of United States population over the same period of time.

    Key observations

In 2023, the population of Boise County was 8,517, a 1.88% increase year-by-year from 2022. Previously, in 2022, Boise County population was 8,360, an increase of 2.79% compared to a population of 8,133 in 2021. Over the last 20 plus years, between 2000 and 2023, population of Boise County increased by 1,736. In this period, the peak population was 8,517 in the year 2023. The numbers suggest that the population has not reached its peak yet and is showing a trend of further growth. Source: U.S. Census Bureau Population Estimates Program (PEP).

    Description

This maps shows City of Boise annexations since the original townsite was established in 1866 by the Idaho Territorial Legislature. Use the time-slider to watch the City grow over time.

An annexation is the legal incorporation of a geographic area in to a political body. A de-annexation is the secession of a geographic area from a political body. De-annexed areas are areas that were once part of the incorporated boundaries of Boise City but have been removed from the incorporated boundaries (based on the ordinance tied to the de-annexation). The source of the data is the ordinances of annexation recorded by the Boise City Clerks' office.

The map also depicts the current incorporated boundaries for cities within Ada County. The Ada County Assessor's Office maintains the city limits and impact areas datasets within Ada County. City boundaries are determined by taxcode and maintained continually, adding areas annexed to city limits by current ordinances. The impact areas dataset depicts the unincorporated areas of Ada County surrounding each city as identified in Title 9 of the Ada County Code, in accordance with Idaho Code Section 67-6526.

This data is maintained by City of Boise GIS and is based on the legal descriptions contained in the ordinances. This data set is continually being updated as annexations occur. It is current to the date it was published.

The data presented in this dataset is derived from the latest U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey (ACS) 2019-2023 5-Year Estimates. To measure the three variables, namely (a) male population, (b) female population and (b) total population, we initially analyzed and categorized the data for each of the age groups. For age groups we divided it into roughly a 5 year bucket for ages between 0 and 85. For over 85, we aggregated data into a single group for all ages. Description
    About this dataset

    Context

The dataset tabulates the data for the Boise City, ID population pyramid, which represents the Boise City population distribution across age and gender, using estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey (ACS) 2019-2023 5-Year Estimates. It lists the male and female population for each age group, along with the total population for those age groups. Higher numbers at the bottom of the table suggest population growth, whereas higher numbers at the top indicate declining birth rates. Furthermore, the dataset can be utilized to understand the youth dependency ratio, old-age dependency ratio, total dependency ratio, and potential support ratio.

    Key observations

    • Youth dependency ratio, which is the number of children aged 0-14 per 100 persons aged 15-64, for Boise City, ID, is 21.2.
    • Old-age dependency ratio, which is the number of persons aged 65 or over per 100 persons aged 15-64, for Boise City, ID, is 21.9.
    • Total dependency ratio for Boise City, ID is 43.2.
    • Potential support ratio, which is the number of youth (working age population) per elderly, for Boise City, ID is 4.6.

    Description

This is a polygon data set depicting the current comprehensive planning areas for Boise City. A comprehensive planning area is defined in Chapter 4-1, page 171, of Blueprint Boise, the current Boise City Comprehensive Plan as, "On the largest scale, the entire area (area of impact) for which the City has authority to prepare comprehensive plans. On a smaller scale, planning area refers to the various sub-areas (i.e. West Bench, Central Bench, Southwest, etc,) which the City has defined as making up the larger planning area. These sub-areas are defined by physical barriers and/or the character of existing developments within them, and may each have specific planning objectives and policies articulated in the Comprehensive Plan." Each polygon in this data set is a specific smaller scale (sub-area) planning area. Collectively, the polygons represent the geography for the Boise City large scale comprehensive planning area. This data set is a critical component of the official Land Use Map within the Boise City Comprehensive Plan. It is used to identify specific areas within Boise City and the Boise Area of Impact to which specific land use designations and policies are applied. The data set is used to assist Boise City staff to identify specific planning areas and manage the growth of those areas to be consistent with the policies and intentions set out in the Boise City Comprehensive Plan. The dataset is generally coincident with the Boise Area of Impact; and is updated through City Council approval when the Boise Area of Impact changes. The data is current to the date the data set was published. For more information, please visit City of Boise Planning & Development.

    Description

This is a polygon data set representing the officially registered neighborhood associations for City of Boise within the city Area of Impact as identified in Chapter 3: Community Structure and Design of the Boise Blueprint - Boise's Comprehensive Plan. Neighborhood Associations are non-profit organizations primarily composed of land owners representing areas of Boise with a distinct ‘style’ or ‘character’ (unique: topography, architecture, history of development, goals) with rights to participate in and influence decisions effecting the development, growth, and maintenance of their defined areas; areas collectively identified as neighborhoods. Each neighborhood has a documented plan with the City of Boise and exists entirely within the current Boise area of impact. This data set was originally created by COMPASS, a regional planning agency for Ada and Canyon County. The data set is now maintained by the City of Boise GIS team. This data set is updated as changes occur and represents a snapshot of the current neighborhood association areas. For more information, please visit City of Boise Energize Our Neighborhoods.

    Description

This is a polygon data set depicting adopted future land use designations within the Boise area of impact, as defined in Blueprint Boise, the citywide comprehensive plan. Land use designations are used to regulate and guide growth and development of the city in order to support the welfare of citizens and the community. Land uses represent the desired optimal future use of lands based on a systematic assessment conducted by the city that evaluates: 1) land and water potential; 2) alternatives for land use; and 3) economic and social conditions. Each land use designation includes specific objectives and policies for development/redevelopment as adopted in the comprehensive plan. Land use designations are not zoning districts; however, land use designations do influence the allowable zones.

    About this dataset

    Context

The dataset tabulates the population of Boise City by gender across 18 age groups. It lists the male and female population in each age group along with the gender ratio for Boise City.
