Demographic Data for Boston’s Neighborhoods, 1950-2019
Boston is a city defined by the unique character of its many neighborhoods. The historical tables created by the BPDA Research Division from U.S. Census Decennial data describe demographic changes in Boston’s neighborhoods from 1950 through 2010 using consistent tract-based geographies. For more analysis of these data, please see Historical Trends in Boston's Neighborhoods. The most recent available neighborhood demographic data come from the 5-year American Community Survey (ACS). The ACS tables also present demographic data for Census-tract approximations of Boston’s neighborhoods. For pdf versions of the data presented here plus earlier versions of the analysis, please see Boston in Context.

This database, including both datasets and spatial shape files, contains information on occupation, school attendance, nativity, and race of the Boston population, by ward, for the years 1880, 1900, and 1930. This database can be used to visualize the profound changes in the economic, educational, and ethnic composition of Boston between 1880 and 1930. It illustrates, among other changes, the great expansion of secondary school enrollment, the decline of youth participation in the work force, the growth of white-collar jobs, the decline of unskilled labor, and the geographical distribution of the Boston Irish, Italian, Jewish, and African-American populations over time. This contextual knowledge is useful for historians researching this time period, and useful to non-historians by depicting the origins of fundamental changes whose legacy is still present in Boston today. The underlying data are drawn from the Integrated Public Use Microdata Series maintained by the University of Minnesota (see documentation for full citation). The data contained here can also be viewed through an interactive map hosted by BostonMap (http://worldmap.harvard.edu/maps/historical_boston).

The U.S. Geological Survey has conducted geologic mapping to characterize the sea floor offshore of Massachusetts. The mapping was carried out using a Simrad Subsea EM 1000 Multibeam Echo Sounder on the Frederick G. Creed on four cruises conducted between 1994 and 1998. The mapping was conducted in cooperation with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and with support from the Canadian Hydrographic Service and the University of New Brunswick. The long-term goal of this mapping effort is to produce high-resolution geologic maps and a Geographic Information System (GIS) project that presents images and grids of bathymetry, shaded relief bathymetry, and backscatter intensity data from these surveys that will serve the needs of research, management and the public.

This dataset represents a group of paper records (a "series") within the Marie C. McCormick papers, 1956-2016 (inclusive), 1968-2009 (bulk), which can be accessed on-site at the Center for the History of Medicine at the Francis A. Countway Library of Medicine in Boston, Massachusetts. The series consists of course teaching records and occasional student records generated by Marie C. McCormick during her tenure at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in the departments of Maternal and Child Health and Society, Human Development, and Health. Courses include: MCH 204 (Maternal and Child Health Issues, Programs and Policies); MCH 219d (Research Methods in Maternal and Child Health); and SHH 246 (Issues in Maternal and Child Health Programs and Policies). Teaching records include: course syllabi and class outlines; student handouts; reading lists and collected publications; presentation and lecture notes; and overhead transparencies and 35-millimeter slides. Student records include student lists, coursework, dissertation drafts and proposals, examination and grading records, and correspondence. Series also includes a CD and a 3.5 inch floppy disk, containing presentations, course readings, and syllabi. Data and associated records are accessible onsite at the Center for the History of Medicine per the conditions governing access described below. Conditions Governing Access to Original Collection Materials: The series represented by this dataset includes student information that is restricted for 80 years from the date of record creation, and Harvard University records that are restricted for 50 years from the date of record creation. Access to electronic records is also premised on the availability of a computer station, requisite software, and/or the ability of Public Services staff to review and/or print out records of interest in advance of an on-site visit. Researchers should contact Public Services for more information. The Marie C. McCormick papers were processed with grant funding from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, as awarded and administered by the Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR) in 2016. View the Marie C. McCormick Papers finding aid for a full collection inventory of both paper and digital records, and for more information about accessing and using the collection.
