Brazil's retail price for diesel fuel reached **** U.S. dollars per liter in 2022. After two years of continual increase, this was the highest price recorded since the turn of the century and a reflection of surging benchmark crude oil prices around the world. In comparison, the lowest retail price for diesel fuel was reported in 2002, at about **** U.S. dollars per liter.

In 2024, a liter of commercial hydrous ethanol fuel in Brazil was sold at an average price of **** Brazilian reals. This represented an increase of roughly three percent in comparison to the previous year, when Brazil's average sale price of ethanol fuel reached **** Brazilian reals. Hydrous ethanol accounts for most of the ethanol production in Brazil.

The north and north-east regions of Brazil had the highest average sale price of ethanol fuel in 2024, with figures amounting to **** and **** Brazilian reals per liter, respectively. Meanwhile, the central-west region had the lowest price, standing below the national average, at **** Brazilian reals per liter. Brazil's ethanol fuel production has surpassed ** million cubic meters in recent years.

That was also the highest figure recorded in the indicated period. In 2021, the minimum biodiesel blend in commercialized diesel fuel in Brazil oscillated between ** and ** percent. Biodiesel sales in the country are conducted through bi-monthly auctions.

The National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Bio fuels (ANP in Portuguese) releases weekly reports of gas, diesel and other fuels prices used in transportation across the country. These datasets bring the mean value per liter, number of gas stations analyzed and other information grouped by regions and states across the country.

In May 2025, crude oil exported from Brazil had an average price of **** U.S. dollars per kilogram, after attaining **** U.S. dollars the month prior. Global oil prices continued to fall in the first half of 2025, which is reflected in the decrease in Brazil's oil export prices. Natural gas imports and domestic production Similar to crude oil, Brazil's natural gas imports also experienced a decline in 2023. The country imported approximately *** billion cubic meters of natural gas, with *** billion cubic meters in gaseous form and **** billion cubic meters as liquefied natural gas (LNG). The decrease in imports can be attributed to Brazil's growing domestic natural gas production, highlighting the country's efforts to reduce dependence on foreign energy sources and strengthen its position in the global energy market.

This paper analyzes the relationship between gasoline and ethanol markets. Previous researches emphasize on substitution effect between gasoline and ethanol. However, in Brazil gasoline and ethanol are substitutes and complementary goods. We investigate the substitution and complementarity effects between fuels by using Structural Vector Autoregressions Vector (SVAR). As a result, in the short run gasoline price shock effect in ethanol demand is greater than ethanol price shock. In the long run, however, consumers make the consumption of ethanol grow. Furthermore, the introduction of flex fuel technology in Brazil did not produce any impact on ethanol price and demand. The crisis has affected positively the biofuel price nevertheless. As an implication, due to gasoline price shock the sucroalcohol sector must guarantee the ethanol domestic supply in the long run.

The Brazilian wood fuel market dropped modestly to $19.2B in 2024, remaining stable against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% from 2012 to 2024; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $20.2B in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2024, consumption remained at a lower figure.
