This dataset looks at the number of Brazilian municipalities where mining is a key economic activity and those where mining is a key job provider. We also listed municipalities that have mining as both a main economic activity and the main employer in a given town. We have also generated maps to visualize the impact of mining in Brazil as a key economic activity and/or job provider. Similarly, we have listed the same information for all the municipalities that received oil royalties in 2019, and the top 100 municipalities whose wealth was mainly generated by agribusiness in 2022. By detailing the economic and employment situation in Brazilian extractive municipalities (mining, oil, and crops), we demonstrate that company towns in Brazil (locations that are highly dependent on one key economic activity for employment generation) are few. Extractive industries may no longer be labour intensive, although economic dependency may follow indirectly, such as because of tax generation. Macroeconomic stability and lower external vulnerability have allowed the issuance of Brazilian external debt bonds denominated in Brazilian reais since 2005. Those issuances have not been used to finance current account deficits. They are important to build a benchmark for corporate bond issuances, associated with the systemic risk of the Brazilian economy. Bond emissions in local currency usually have the advantage of eliminating the exchange rate risk for the debtor. It might also be used as hedge for an external investor, and they are not exposed to the convertibility risk, related to foreign reserve shortages or capital controls. Brazilian issuances of securities abroad denominated in local currency have had longer maturity than comparable bonds in the domestic market in the period. Since the country does not depend on foreign issuances to pay its debt, the monetary authority has been able to choose more favorable moments for the issuances in terms of the returns paid on the bonds.

Abstract Objective: to estimate the underreporting of fatal work accidents (FWA) in information systems of the Ministry of Health, State Secretariat of Public Security (SSP), Ministry of Labor and Social Security Secretariat, from 2007 to 2015, in Palmas, Tocantins. Methods: the data sources of the FWA cases were the Mortality Information System (SIM), the Hospital Information System of the Unified Health System (SIH-SUS), the Information System on Diseases of Compulsory Declaration (SINAN), the Annual Social Information Report (RAIS), the Information System of Communication of Work Accidents (SISCAT), police reports (PR), Cadaver Referrals (GEC) and Cadaveric Examination Reports (LEC). To calculate underreporting within each system, a single database was created with the records of all sources, eliminating repetitions. Results: 114 cases were identified. Under-reports identified were: SIM, 28.9%; SINAN, 44.7%; SSP, 55.3%; RAIS, 73.1%; SISCAT, 65.4%, for insured workers. Conclusion: the best performance in registry is from SIM. Extensive underreporting was observed in all other sources. Mortality records due to FWA are underestimated. Action to improve recording, especially at SIH-SUS, RAIS, SISCAT, and SSP, followed by SINAN and SIM, are required.
