    Description

Breton Island, Louisiana Baseline (Geographic, NAD83) consists of vector line data that were input into the Digital Shoreline Analysis System (DSAS) version 4.0, which is computer software used to compute rate of change statistics. A baseline was acquired from the Barrier Island Comprehensive Monitoring Program (BICM) 2009 report (http://lacoast.gov/reports/project/3890772~1.pdf). The baseline included in the BICM report covered the entire Louisiana coastline, so the baseline representing Breton Island had to be clipped then exported to a new shapefile named Breton_Baseline.shp. The position relative to Breton Island was determined to be the best possible baseline to use for the study. The baseline file was used to create the transect files, which are required by the DSAS program to calculate rate of change statistics.

    Description

These data were automated to provide an accurate high-resolution historical shoreline of Breton Island, Louisiana suitable as a geographic information system (GIS) data layer. These data are derived from shoreline maps that were produced by the NOAA National Ocean Service including its predecessor agencies which were based on an office interpretation of imagery and/or field survey. The NGS attribution scheme 'Coastal Cartographic Object Attribute Source Table (C-COAST)' was developed to conform the attribution of various sources of shoreline data into one attribution catalog. C-COAST is not a recognized standard, but was influenced by the International Hydrographic Organization's S-57 Object-Attribute standard so the data would be more accurately translated into S-57. Description

The table brings together all the data used for the construction of the economic dimension of the Breton Sustainable Development Index. This dimension brings together themes and indicators on the economic dynamics of Breton territories at the level of public institutions of inter-municipal cooperation (EPCI). For each subdimensional, the data provides: — statistical indicators; — the same standardised and ordered statistical indicators out of 1; — a summary index which corresponds to the average of the standardised statistical indicators; — a category of territory (balanced territory A, intermediate territory B, fragile territory C) calculated according to the positioning of the index against the other 58 indices (one per EPCI). For more information on table structuring and data sources, see the Data Dictionary, downloadable at: http://kartenn.region-bretagne.fr/portail-idd/data.html

    Origin

The data come from several statistical sources: DIRECCTE, INSEE (RP, DADS), CRESS, GIP Bretagne Environnement. The calculations of the indicators and indices were carried out by the Knowledge, Observation, Planning and Prospective Service. The geographical contours come from OpenStreetMap.

    Description

    Description

What? An aerial wildlife population survey is used in Cape Breton Highlands National Park to estimate moose (Alces alces) population density. When? Monitoring frequency for this measure occurs every two to three years. Surveys take place in early March when there is snowpack present, the weather is stable, and sightability is increased by sun angle and day length. How? The population survey uses a random stratified design. The study area is Cape Breton Highlands National Park (950km2) and is divided up into Survey Units (SU’s) or “blocks”. Survey units are numbered sequentially in rows running from west to east, beginning in the north. Stratification lines are flown along transects running through the center point of each survey unit, and cluster analysis is used to assign all survey units a moose density stratum: High, Medium or Low. Survey units are randomly selected from each stratum to be flown in the block survey. 50 survey units are initially selected (35 Low, 10 Medium, 5 High), with more survey units added as necessary to obtain a population estimate with a 90% confidence interval. Why? Moose are the top herbivore in Cape Breton Highlands National Park. Benefiting from favourable conditions following a spruce budworm outbreak and, having no significant natural predators, the moose population has become hyperabundant, resulting in negative impacts to the parks forest ecosystem. This survey every helps to monitor changes in moose density in the park, and determine if it is at a sustainable level (ie. within the natural range of variability observed in predator controlled populations).

    Description

This dataset contains binary point-cloud data, produced from remotely sensed, geographically referenced topobathymetric measurements collected by Photo Science, Inc., encompassing the Breton and Gosier Island, LA study areas. The original area of interest was buffered by 100 meters to ensure complete coverage, resulting in approximately 75 square miles of lidar data. The Breton Island Lidar project called for the planning, acquisition, processing, and derivative products of topobathymetric lidar data, collected at a nominal pulse spacing (NPS) of 0.5-0.45 meters (4-5 points/square meter). Lidar acquisition was prioritized to coincide with the lowest tide possible. Water clarity was also assessed and deemed acceptable prior to acquisition flights. The data, in meters, are projected to UTM Zone 16 North and referenced horizontally to the NAD83 (2011) datum and vertically to the NAVD88 (GEOID12A) datum. The classified point-cloud data were delivered in LAS v1.2 format and the merged DEM was converted to a GeoTIFF file. Each LAS file contains data in a 1-kilometer by 1-kilometer tile named according to the US National Grid conventions. The final product was a LAZ file for Breton Island and another for Gosier Islands.

    Description

What? Eastern Red-Backed Salamander (Plethodon cinereus) abundance is being monitored at various old growth forest sites within Cape Breton Highlands National Park. When? Monitoring frequency occurred annually for three consecutive years after initial set-up, and biennially henceforth. In each cycle, four consecutive visits are conducted over a four week period in the fall; the timing is intended to coincide with favourable soil temperatures for salamanders. How? The monitoring sites are located within old growth stands in Cape Breton Highlands National Park. The sites consist of 40 – 50 artificial cover objects (ACO’s – typically pine boards measuring 10” x 10” x 1”) laid down directly on the mineral soil of the forest floor. At each site visit the artificial cover objects are temporarily lifted and inspected; species, count, color phase and age class are recorded of resident salamanders. Why? Salamanders are a useful indicator species of forest health because they are sensitive to a wide range of ecological stressors, particularly those that influence micro-climate, air and water quality. Description

What? Stream temperatures on third order streams in Cape Breton Highlands National Park are being monitored to determine if mean water temperatures are changing over time. When? Monitoring frequency occurs annually from June 15th to September 15th on various park streams. How? Water temperature data loggers are deployed in selected park streams in the spring of each year and are retrieved in the fall. The loggers are programmed to record hourly water temperatures over the period of deployment and the results are downloaded at the end of the deployment period. Why? Water temperature can be used to detect landscape level changes due to issues such as hydroelectric development, thermal pollution, and deforestation. Water temperature also represents a direct indicator of the effects of climate change on aquatic environments.

    Description

As part of the restoration monitoring component of the Deepwater Horizon early restoration project, scientists from the U.S. Geological Survey St. Petersburg Coastal and Marine Science Center (USGS SPCMSC) conducted single-beam and multibeam bathymetry surveys around Breton Island, Louisiana (LA), from August 3-5, 2022, for Field Activity Number (FAN) 2022-328-FA. The purpose of data collection was to develop a baseline digital elevation model of the seafloor around Breton Island for comparison with both previous and future elevation assessments, and to evaluate elevation change following island restoration. The survey encompassed approximately 65 square kilometers of nearshore environment including the former Mississippi River to Gulf Outlet and submerged areas of South Breton Island. The single-beam bathymetry was acquired using two 12-foot personal watercrafts (PWCs) and a 20-foot Twin Vee. All vessels were outfitted with high precision Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) ...
