The Omicron variant had been designated by the World Health Organization as a variant of concern in November 2021 and is regarded as more infectious than previous variants.

    These reports summarise the surveillance of influenza, COVID-19 and other seasonal respiratory illnesses.

    Weekly findings from community, primary care, secondary care and mortality surveillance systems are included in the reports.

    Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, for the 2020 to 2021 season the weekly reports will be published all year round.

    This page includes reports published from 8 October 2020 to the 8 July 2021.

    Due to a misclassification of 2 subgroups within the Asian and Asian British and Black and Black British ethnic categories, the proportions of deaths for these ethnic categories in reports published between week 27 2021 and week 29 2021 were incorrect. These have been corrected from week 30 2021 report onwards.

    The impact of the correction specifically affects the proportion of deaths with an Asian and Asian British and/or Black and Black British ethnic categories. The total number of deaths reported was unaffected. Other ethnicity data included in the reports were not affected by this issue.

    This feature service contains COVID-19 data automatically updated from the Public Health England (PHE) API service, daily. Using this API, this service takes the current day request minus two days. Therefore the data will always be two days behind. This is a result of the delay between PHE's specimen date and reporting date.The Polygon Layers, which all contain spatial data, provide information about the latest cumulative figures at three geographies; Local Authority, Regions and Nations. The Tables, which are not spatially aware, provide historical data for each feature. The format of these tables allow you to use the Join tool with the Polygon Layers and create a time enabled layer. This can be used within a dashboard or on the animation tool to view patterns over time.

    The 2019 novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV), otherwise known as COVID-19, is an infectious disease first identified in the city of Wuhan, capital of Hubei province in China. Infections have since been reported worldwide resulting in an unprecedented international response that amongst other containment measures, lead to the widespread suspension of many sporting fixtures worldwide. Resuming sport Resuming high-level sporting events has presented officials with a myriad of problems with solutions such as the regular testing of players and exclusion of live, in-person audiences have enabled the games to take place within the constraints of the ongoing containment measures.
    English Premier League English Premier League football became one of the first major sporting events to resume in the United Kingdom on June 17th after having being suspended due to the Coronavirus in March The opinion of the British population on the return of the Premier league was heavily divided with almost half of the population holding the opinion that the 17th June was 'too soon' for the Premier league to resume however 26 percent of the population indicated that this was 'about the right time' for its return. As might be expected there was a substantial relationship observed between the level of interest of the respondent and their opinion on the appropriateness of the return of the Premier League. Only the respondents that indicated that the Premier League is one of their 'TOP' interests exhibited the greatest share indicating that the 17th June was 'about the right time' for the Premier League to resume with over 57 percent indicating as such. Conversely, the greatest share of all other respondent groups indicated that it was 'too soon' for the Premier League to resume.
    Level of risk presented to athletes During a representative survey of the British adult population, undertaken between the 3rd and 4th June 2020, respondents were asked their opinion on the level of risk presented to professional athletes taking part in these competitions that have resumed. The greatest share of respondents held the opinion that the resuming sporting fixtures would present the same level of risk to professional athletes taking part in these competitions. The share of respondents that held the opinion that resuming sporting fixtures would present a higher amount of risk to athletes was also quite substantial with 33 percent indicating as such. As with the opinions on the appropriateness of the return of the Premier League the perceived level of risk to athletes in resuming sports is heavily related to the respondents stated interest in the returning sport. The share of respondent that hold the opinion that that resuming sporting fixtures would present the same level of risk to professional athletes taking part in these competitions increases with increasing interest in the Premier League with 57 percent of the respondents that stated the Premier League was one of their 'TOP' interests indicating as such.

    The UK COVID-19 Vocal Audio Dataset is designed for the training and evaluation of machine learning models that classify SARS-CoV-2 infection status or associated respiratory symptoms using vocal audio. The UK Health Security Agency recruited voluntary participants through the national Test and Trace programme and the REACT-1 survey in England from March 2021 to March 2022, during dominant transmission of the Alpha and Delta SARS-CoV-2 variants and some Omicron variant sublineages. Audio recordings of volitional coughs, exhalations, and speech (speech not available in open access version) were collected in the 'Speak up to help beat coronavirus' digital survey alongside demographic, self-reported symptom and respiratory condition data, and linked to SARS-CoV-2 test results. The UK COVID-19 Vocal Audio Dataset represents the largest collection of SARS-CoV-2 PCR-referenced audio recordings to date. PCR results were linked to 70,794 of 72,999 participants and 24,155 of 25,776 positive cases. Respiratory symptoms were reported by 45.62% of participants.       • Due to the large size of the dataset, to assist with ease of download, the audio files have been zipped into covid_data.z{ip, 01-24}. This enables the dataset to be downloaded in short periods, reducing the chances of a dropped internet connection scuppering progress. To unzip, first, ensure that all zip files are in the same directory. Then run the command 'unzip covid_data.zip' or right-click on 'covid_data.zip' and use a programme such as 'The Unarchiver' to open the file.

PCR results were linked to 70,794 of 72,999 participants and 24,155 of 25,776 positive cases. Respiratory symptoms were reported by 45.62% of participants. This dataset has additional potential uses for bioacoustics research, with 11.30% participants reporting asthma, and 27.20% with linked influenza PCR test results.

    11th January 2020 Change to vaccination data made available by UK gov - now just cumulative number of vaccines delivered are available for both first and second doses. For the devolved nations the cumulative totals are available for the dates from when given, however for the UK as a whole the total doses given is just on the last date of the index, regardless of when those vaccines were given.

    4th January 2020 VACCINATION DATA ADDED - New and Cumulative First Dose Vaccination Data added to UK_National_Total_COVID_Dataset.csv and UK_Devolved_Nations_COVID_Dataset.csv

    2nd December 2020:

    NEW population, land area and population density data added in file NEW_Official_Population_Data_ONS_mid-2019.csv. This data is scraped from the Office for National Statistics and covers the UK, devolved UK nations, regions and local authorities (boroughs).

    20th November 2020:

    With European governments struggling with a 'second-wave' of rising cases, hospitalisations and deaths resulting from the SARS-CoV-2 virus (COVID-19), I wanted to make a comparative analysis between the data coming out of major European nations since the start of the pandemic.

    I started by creating a Sweden COVID-19 dataset and now I'm looking at my own country, the United Kingdom.

    The data comes from https://coronavirus.data.gov.uk/ and I used the Developer's Guide to scrape the data, so it was a fairly simple process. The notebook that scapes the data is public and can be found here. Further information about data collection methodologies and definitions can be found here.

    The data includes the overall numbers for the UK as a whole, the numbers for each of the devolved UK nations (Eng, Sco, Wal & NI), English Regions and Upper Tier Local Authorities (UTLA) for all of the UK (what we call Boroughs). I have also included a small table with the populations of the 4 devolved UK nations, used to calculate the death rates per 100,000 population.

    As I've said for before - I am not an Epidemiologist, Sociologist or even a Data Scientist. I am actually a Mechanical Engineer! The objective here is to improve my data science skills and maybe provide some useful data to the wider community.

    CVD-COVID-UK/COVID-IMPACT, co-ordinated by the British Heart Foundation (BHF) Data Science Centre (https://bhfdatasciencecentre.org/), is one of the NIHR-BHF Cardiovascular Partnership’s National Flagship Projects.

    CVD-COVID-UK aims to understand the relationship between COVID-19 and cardiovascular diseases through analyses of de-identified, pseudonymised, linked, nationally collated health datasets across the four nations of the UK. COVID-IMPACT is an expansion of this approach in England to address research questions looking at the impact of COVID-19 on other health conditions and their related risk factors. The consortium has over 400 members across more than 50 institutions including data custodians, data scientists and clinicians, all of whom have signed up to an agreed set of principles with an inclusive, open and transparent ethos.

    On March 4, 2020, the first death as a result of coronavirus (COVID-19) was recorded in the United Kingdom (UK). The number of deaths in the UK has increased significantly since then. As of January 13, 2023, the number of confirmed deaths due to coronavirus in the UK amounted to 202,157. On January 21, 2021, 1,370 deaths were recorded, which was the highest total in single day in the UK since the outbreak began.

    The UK has had the highest number of deaths from coronavirus in western Europe. In terms of rate of coronavirus deaths, the UK has recorded 297.8 deaths per 100,000 population.

The South East has the highest number of first-episode confirmed cases of the virus in the UK with 3,123,050 cases, while London and the North West have 2,912,859 and 2,580,090 confirmed cases respectively. As of January 16, the UK has had 50 new cases per 100,000 in the last seven days.
