    Description

The Counties dataset was updated on October 31, 2023 from the United States Census Bureau (USCB) and is part of the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT)/Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) National Transportation Atlas Database (NTAD). This resource is a member of a series. The TIGER/Line shapefiles and related database files (.dbf) are an extract of selected geographic and cartographic information from the U.S. Census Bureau's Master Address File / Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing (MAF/TIGER) Database (MTDB). The MTDB represents a seamless national file with no overlaps or gaps between parts, however, each TIGER/Line shapefile is designed to stand alone as an independent data set, or they can be combined to cover the entire nation. The primary legal divisions of most states are termed counties. In Louisiana, these divisions are known as parishes. In Alaska, which has no counties, the equivalent entities are the organized boroughs, city and boroughs, municipalities, and for the unorganized area, census areas. The latter are delineated cooperatively for statistical purposes by the State of Alaska and the Census Bureau. In four states (Maryland, Missouri, Nevada, and Virginia), there are one or more incorporated places that are independent of any county organization and thus constitute primary divisions of their states. These incorporated places are known as independent cities and are treated as equivalent entities for purposes of data presentation. The District of Columbia and Guam have no primary divisions, and each area is considered an equivalent entity for purposes of data presentation. The Census Bureau treats the following entities as equivalents of counties for purposes of data presentation: Municipios in Puerto Rico, Districts and Islands in American Samoa, Municipalities in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, and Islands in the U.S. Virgin Islands. The entire area of the United States, Puerto Rico, and the Island Areas is covered by counties or equivalent entities. The boundaries for counties and equivalent entities are mostly as of January 1, 2023, as reported through the Census Bureau's Boundary and Annexation Survey (BAS).

Data Quality ▼►Scope of quality information  ▼►Resource level  attribute Scope description  Attributes The States and railroads maintain their own file and get updated to the FRA. The information is reported to the FRA on the U.S. DOT-ARR Crossing inventory form.

Attributes The quality of the inventory can vary because a record of grade crossing location is being maintained by each state and railroad that is responsible for maintaining its respective information.

Lineage ▼►Lineage statement The data was downloaded from the HWY-Rail Crossing Inventory Files. All crossings that were closed or abandon were queried out of the data. All of the crossings with a zero within the latitude or longitude were queried out. Any crossing outside a bounding box of box ((Latitude >= 18 & Latitude <= 72) AND (Longitude >= -171 & Longitude <= -63)) were queried out.

    Description

The Means of Transportation to Work table from the 2019 American Community Survey is as of Thursday September 17, 2020. This data was joined by 2019 tract-level shapefiles for all 50 States, District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, also provided by Census. A new file was created the combines the demographic variables from the former with the cartographic boundaries of the latter. The demographic variables contain count estimates for means of transportation to work, by Census tract, the shapefile allows these values to be visualized on a map. Percentage values for the count estimates were calculated and added, with workers 16 years and over as the denominator.

The Bikeshare dataset was compiled on June 30, 2025 and was updated September 17, 2025 from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) and is part of the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT)/Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) National Transportation Atlas Database (NTAD). The bikeshare layer shows the _location of all bikeshare docking stations, along with their address if known and the city and state it is located in. Prior to April 30, 2025, this bikeshare layer reflected the bikeshare stations available for the latest Intermodal Passenger Connectivity Database (IPCD) data collection along with intermodal passenger connectivity information. To provide this timelier snapshot of bikeshare stations, the Bureau of Transportation Statistics is no longer including connectivity information. To obtain the previously provided IPCD Bikeshare layer on NTAD for the latest only bikeshare year that included connectivity information, query the current IPCD layer on NTAD (https://doi.org/10.21949/1522239) using the query where the “BIKE_SHARE†field is equal to 1, signifying that bikeshare service is provided at that _location.
