The urbanization rate in Africa was estimated at nearly **** percent in 2024. Urbanization on the continent has increased steadily since 2000, when close to ** percent of the total population lived in urban areas. This share is expected to increase further in the coming years. However, the proportion of the rural and urban population varies significantly on the continent. In 2024, Gabon and Libya were the most urbanized countries in Africa, each exceeding ** percent. In contrast, Burundi and Niger registered the lowest urbanization rates, which recorded only ** and ** percent of their populations living in urban areas, respectively. Overall, the degree of urbanization on the continent was lower than the world average, which was set at ** percent as of 2025. In that year, Africa and Asia were the continents with the lowest urbanization rate.

The urban indicators data available here are analyzed, compiled and published by UN-Habitat’s Global Urban Observatory which supports governments, local authorities and civil society organizations to develop urban indicators, data and statistics. Urban statistics are collected through household surveys and censuses conducted by national statistics authorities. Global Urban Observatory team analyses and compiles urban indicators statistics from surveys and censuses. Additionally, Local urban observatories collect, compile and analyze urban data for national policy development. Population statistics are produced by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, World Urbanization Prospects.
The dataset consists of settlement extents across Burundi, as well as accompanying settlement type based on the degrees of urbanization, place codes, and confidence level for each settlement extent. Updates in this version include: (1) The degree of urbanisation has replaced the previous classifications of built-up areas, small settlement areas, and hamlets (2) Boundary names have been removed, since the OCHA dataset is not an official set of boundaries and may not be accurate (3) Building count ranges have been included (4) Predicted false positives have been included (5) Population data have been removed until new constrained population numbers are available (6) Settlement status has been included, as it pertains to Version 01 of the settlement extents This work has been undertaken as part of the Geo-Referenced Infrastructure and Demographic Data for Development (GRID3) programme. The programme is funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the United Kingdom's Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office. The GRID3 BDI - Settlement Extents v3.0 consists of a geographic representation of settlements in Burundi, in two forms: (1) settlement polygons, and (2) spatial points depicting the centroids of settled grid cells at 3-arc seconds (or ~100 meters) contained within settlement polygons.
Both layers include attributes as described in the codebooks.
The current version supersedes GRID3 Burundi Settlement Extents, Version 02; the following changes were made: (1) Development of a new methodology to derive building counts and settlement polygons with open data. (2) Estimation of a probability value for settlement polygons (3) Addition of a building-area measure (4) Replacement of degree of urbanization with classification based on built-up areas, small settlement areas, and hamlets (5) Elimination of building-count ranges (6) Elimination of variable comparing to previous versions
