    CONTENT

The world's busiest airports by passenger traffic are measured by total passengers (data from Airports Council International), defined as passengers enplaned plus passengers deplaned plus direct-transit passengers. Harts field–Jackson Atlanta International Airport has held the top spot as the world's busiest airport each year since 1998, except for 2020, when it was temporarily unseated by Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport due to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Harts field–Jackson Atlanta regained the top position in 2021. Alternatively, London has the world's busiest city airport system by passenger count.

As of 2022, the United States accounts for the top four busiest airports in the world. Eight countries have at least two airports in the top 50, with the United States at 19, Turkey with three; and France, Germany, India, Mexico, Spain, and the United Kingdom with two airports each In terms of regions, North America has 22 airports in the top 50, followed by Europe at 11, Southeast Asia and West Asia each at five, East Asia, South Asia and South America each at two, and Oceania has one.

    Airport City Mappings and Aggregations

    By data.world's Admin [source]

    About this dataset

This dataset provides mapping and aggregation data for airports, cities, and countries. It was created for The Pudding's story titled What Airport Traffic Tells Us About the World's Megacities, which was published in July 2018. The flight data included in this dataset was obtained from the ICAO API, with connections excluded in the counts.

The dataset contains information on flights to cities, including a mapping of cities with multiple airports as well as a reference file mapping cities to their corresponding airports. This allows for analysis and understanding of airport traffic patterns within different cities.

In addition to city and airport information, the dataset also includes details about countries where the airports are located. This comprehensive data provides insights into global air travel trends and facilitates further exploration regarding population demographics.

Please note that this dataset does not include specific dates related to flight records but offers a static snapshot of airport-city aggregations at the time it was created.

The original source for this dataset is mentioned as ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) through their API. The population data used can be directly downloaded from United Nations sources.

Overall, this expansive collection of data serves as a valuable resource for researchers interested in studying airport traffic patterns and understanding relationships between airports, cities, and countries worldwide

    How to use the dataset

    Understanding the Columns

    • City: The name of the city.
    • code_4: The 4-letter code representing the city.
    • code_3: The 3-letter code representing the city.
    • Airport Name: The name of the airport.
    • three-digit code: The three-digit code assigned to the airport.
    • four_digit: The four-digit code assigned to the airport.
    • l1: The first level of location information for the airport.
    • l2: The second level of location information for the airport.
    • Country: The country where the airport is located.

    Using Flight Data

The dataset includes flight data with mappings from cities to their corresponding airports.

    • To find flights to specific cities, refer to /analysis_data/airport-city-aggregations.csv. This file provides mapping and aggregation data specifically for flights to cities, including multiple airports within each city.

    • To determine which airports correspond to each city, consult /analysis_data/city-mappings.csv, which contains a mapping of cities with their corresponding airports.

    Analyzing Airport Traffic

The dataset allows you to analyze airport traffic patterns and understand connections between different cities worldwide.

    • You can filter or group by columns such as City, Country, or Airport Name to aggregate data based on your analysis needs.

    • By cross-referencing flight routes depicted in maps provided in conjunction with this dataset (referenced in the source), you can gain insights into the world's megacities and their connectivity.

    Population Data

For additional context, population data for cities and countries can be obtained directly from the United Nations (UN).

    Example Analysis

You can use this dataset to answer various interesting questions, such as:

    • Which are the busiest airports in terms of traffic?
    • What are the major airline hubs around the world?
    • How is airport traffic distributed across different countries and continents?
    • How do flight frequencies vary between cities with multiple airports?
    • Are there any emerging airport hubs in developing regions?

    Remember to explore

    Research Ideas

    • Analyzing airport traffic patterns: This dataset can be used to analyze airport traffic patterns by examining the number of flights and passengers for each city and airport. Researchers or analysts can identify the busiest airports, the most popular routes, and the cities with the highest air travel demand.
    • Studying city connectivity: The dataset provides information on cities and their corresponding airports, allowing researchers to study the connectivity between different cities around the world. By analyzing flight routes, researchers can gain insights into global transportation networks and identify major hubs for international travel.
    • Exploring urbanization and economic development: Since this dataset i...

    Description

Nigeria is the African country with the largest population, counting over 230 million people. As of 2024, the largest city in Nigeria was Lagos, which is also the largest city in sub-Saharan Africa in terms of population size. The city counts more than nine million inhabitants, whereas Kano, the second most populous city, registers around 3.6 million inhabitants. Lagos is the main financial, cultural, and educational center in the country. Where Africa’s urban population is booming The metropolitan area of Lagos is also among the largest urban agglomerations in the world. Besides Lagos, another most populated citiy in Africa is Cairo, in Egypt. However, Africa’s urban population is booming in other relatively smaller cities. For instance, the population of Bujumbura, in Burundi, could grow by 123 percent between 2020 and 2035, making it the fastest growing city in Africa and likely in the world. Similarly, Zinder, in Niger, could reach over one million inhabitants by 2035, the second fastest growing city. Demographic urban shift More than half of the world’s population lives in urban areas. In the next decades, this will increase, especially in Africa and Asia. In 2020, over 80 percent of the population in Northern America was living in urban areas, the highest share in the world. In Africa, the degree of urbanization was about 40 percent, the lowest among all continents. Meeting the needs of a fast-growing population can be a challenge, especially in low-income countries. Therefore, there will be a growing necessity to implement policies to sustainably improve people’s lives in rural and urban areas.

    Description

As of 2022, Brazilian cities had some of the most used bus rapid transit (BRT) systems in the world, with Rio de Janeiro recording just over *********** passengers, the largest BRT ridership in the world. São Paulo ranked fourth, with *********** annual passengers. While Brazilian cities have some of the largest riderships, in terms of length, the largest bus rapid transit system in the world is in Jakarta, Indonesia. Bus rapid transit Bus rapid transit (BRT) differs slightly from conventional urban bus transit in that BRT is intended to provide higher capacity and lower transport times. This is generally achieved through a combination of dedicated bus lanes, multiple car vehicles, buses having right of way, and greater distance between stops. BRT systems are most popular in Latin America. Rapid transit in Latin America Coexisting with its extensive use of BRT, Latin America also has a considerable network of metro train systems. ** cities in Latin America have a metro train network and the region has an annual metro ridership consistently larger than North America. However, the Latin American metro network is somewhat limited in scope, having an overall track length lower than its ridership would suggest and with many systems having been built relatively recently.
