    Description

This dataset is part of the Geographical repository maintained by Opendatasoft. This dataset contains data for zip codes 5 digits in United States of America.ZIP Code Tabulation Areas (ZCTAs) are approximate area representations of U.S. Postal Service (USPS) ZIP Code service areas that the Census Bureau creates to present statistical data for each decennial census. The Census Bureau delineates ZCTA boundaries for the United States, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Guam, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, and the U.S. Virgin Islands once each decade following the decennial census. Data users should not use ZCTAs to identify the official USPS ZIP Code for mail delivery. The USPS makes periodic changes to ZIP Codes to support more efficient mail delivery.Processors and tools are using this data.EnhancementsAdd ISO 3166-3 codes.Simplify geometries to provide better performance across the services.Add administrative hierarchy.

    Description
This feature service is derived from the Esri "United States Zip Code Boundaries" layer, queried to only CA data.

Published by the California Department of Technology Geographic Information Services Team.
The GIS Team can be reached at ODSdataservices@state.ca.gov.

U.S. ZIP Code Boundaries represents five-digit ZIP Code areas used by the U.S. Postal Service to deliver mail more effectively. The first digit of a five-digit ZIP Code divides the United States into 10 large groups of states (or equivalent areas) numbered from 0 in the Northeast to 9 in the far West. Within these areas, each state is divided into an average of 10 smaller geographical areas, identified by the second and third digits. These digits, in conjunction with the first digit, represent a Sectional Center Facility (SCF) or a mail processing facility area. The fourth and fifth digits identify a post office, station, branch or local delivery area.

As of the time this layer was published, in January 2025, Esri's boundaries are sourced from TomTom (June 2024) and the 2023 population estimates are from Esri Demographics. Esri updates its layer annually and those changes will immediately be reflected in this layer. Note that, because this layer passes through Esri's data, if you want to know the true date of the underlying data, click through to Esri's original source data and look at their metadata for more information on updates.

Cautions about using Zip Code boundary data
Zip code boundaries have three characteristics you should be aware of before using them:
    1. Zip code boundaries change, in ways small and large - these are not a stable analysis unit. Data you received keyed to zip codes may have used an earlier and very different boundary for your zip codes of interest.
    2. Historically, the United States Postal Service has not published zip code boundaries, and instead, boundary datasets are compiled by third party vendors from address data. That means that the boundary data are not authoritative, and any data you have keyed to zip codes may use a different, vendor-specific method for generating boundaries from the data here.
    3. Zip codes are designed to optimize mail delivery, not social, environmental, or demographic characteristics. Analysis using zip codes is subject to create issues with the Modifiable Areal Unit Problem that will bias any results because your units of analysis aren't designed for the data being studied.
As of early 2025, USPS appears to be in the process of releasing boundaries, which will at least provide an authoritative source, but because of the other factors above, we do not recommend these boundaries for many use cases. If you are using these for anything other than mailing purposes, we recommend reconsideration. We provide the boundaries as a convenience, knowing people are looking for them, in order to ensure that up-to-date boundaries are available.

The dashboard was creating using Business Analyst Infographics. Read more about it here: https://www.esri.com/en-us/arcgis/products/data/overview?rmedium=www_esri_com_EtoF&rsource=/en-us/arcgis/products/esri-demographics/overview Data Source: U.S. Census Bureau, Census 2020 Summary File 1, 2021 American Community Survey(ACS), and ESRI 2022 Demographics and Tapestry Segmentation. For more information on Esri Demographics see HERE and for Tapestry see HERE.Geographies: The council district boundaries used in this dashboard are those that were effective as of May 6, 2023.Much of the science for determining the data for an irregular polygon is explained here:https://doc.arcgis.com/en/community-analyst/help/calculation-estimates-for-user-created-areas.htmCalculation estimates for user-created areasBusiness Analyst employs a GeoEnrichment service which uses the concept of a study area to define the location of the point or area that you want to enrich with additional information. If one or more points is input as a study area, the service will create a one-mile ring buffer around the points or points to collect and append enrichment data. You can optionally change the ring buffer size or create drive-time service areas around a point. The GeoEnrichment service uses a sophisticated geographic retrieval methodology to aggregate data for rings and other polygons. A geographic retrieval methodology determines how data is gathered and summarized or aggregated for input features. For standard geographic units, such as states, provinces, counties, or postal codes, the link between a designated area and its attribute data is a simple one-to-one relationship. For example, if an input study trade area contains a selection of ZIP Codes, the data retrieval is a simple process of gathering the data for those areas.Data Allocation MethodThe Data Allocation method allocates block group data to custom areas by examining where the population is located within the block group and determines how much of the population of a block group overlaps a custom area. This method is used in the United States, and similarly in Canada. The population data reported for census blocks, a more granular level of geography than block groups, is used to determine where the population is distributed within a block group. If the geographic center of a block falls within the custom area, the entire population for the block is used to weight the block group data. The geographic distribution of the population at the census block level determines the proportion of census block group data that is allocated to user specified areas as shown in the example.Note:Depending on the data, households, housing units or businesses at the block group level are used as weights. Employing block centriods is superior because it accounts for the possibility that the population may not be evenly distributed geographically throughout a block group.

    Description

Address ranges describe a label given to a unique collection of addresses that fall along a road or path. Address ranges provide a way of locating homes and businesses based on their street addresses when no other location information is available.Using a house number, street name, street side and ZIP code, address ranges can locate the address to the geographic area associated to that side of the street. Once geocoded, the U.S. Census Bureau can assign the address to a field assignment area or tabulate the data for that address. In addition, academics, researchers, professionals and government agencies outside of the Census Bureau use MAF/TIGER address ranges to transform tabular addresses into geographical datasets for decision-making and analytical purposes.Address ranges must be unique to geocode addresses to the correct location and avoid geocoding conflicts. Multiple elements in MAF/TIGER are required to make an address range unique including street names, address house numbers and street feature geometries, such as street centerlines. The address range data model is designed to maximize geocoding matches with their correct geographic areas in MAF/TIGER by allowing an unlimited number of address range-to-street feature relationships. The Census Bureau’s Geography Division devises numerous operations and processes to build and maintain high quality address ranges so that:Address ranges accurately describe the location of addresses on the ground.Address All possible city-style addresses are geocoded.Address ranges can handle all known address and street name variations.Address ranges conform with current U.S. Postal Service ZIP codes.Address ranges are reliable and free from conflicts.Automated software continually updates existing address ranges, builds new address ranges and corrects errors. An automated operation links address location points and tabular address information to street feature edges with matching street names in the same block to build and modify address ranges. Many business rules and legal value checks ensure quality address range data in MAF/TIGER. For example, business rules prevent adding or modifying address ranges that overlap another house number range with the same street name and ZIP code. Legal value checks verify that address ranges include mandatory attribute information, valid data types and valid character values. Some of the TIGER/Line products for the public include address ranges and give the public the ability to geocode addresses to MAF/TIGER address ranges for the user’s own purpose. The address range files are available for the nation, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Island Areas at the county level. TIGER/Line files require geographic information system (GIS) software to use.The Census Bureau Geocoder Service is a web service provided to the public. The service accepts up to 1,000 input addresses and, based on Census address ranges, returns the interpolated geocoded location and census geographies. Users can access the service a web interface or a representational state transfer (REST) application program interface (API) web service.Download: https://www2.census.gov/geo/tiger/TGRGDB24/tlgdb_2024_a_us_addr.gdb.zip
