As of June 2024, the most popular database management system (DBMS) worldwide was Oracle, with a ranking score of 1244.08; MySQL and Microsoft SQL server rounded out the top three. Although the database management industry contains some of the largest companies in the tech industry, such as Microsoft, Oracle and IBM, a number of free and open-source DBMSs such as PostgreSQL and MariaDB remain competitive. Database Management Systems As the name implies, DBMSs provide a platform through which developers can organize, update, and control large databases. Given the business world’s growing focus on big data and data analytics, knowledge of SQL programming languages has become an important asset for software developers around the world, and database management skills are seen as highly desirable. In addition to providing developers with the tools needed to operate databases, DBMS are also integral to the way that consumers access information through applications, which further illustrates the importance of the software.

The London cut available to download here, was created using a postcode list. Therefore, if there is an error in the postcode, or some other problem caused the postcode listed not to match a London postcode, those business will not be included in the file. Furthermore, inaccuracies in postcodes may mean that no local authority is listed for a company.

Each entry represents a financial accounts submission of either a whole company or part of one. Some businesses have more than one entry in the directory because they need to submit more than one set of accounts for different parts of their business. Therefore, the number of entries in the directory will be greater than the number of businesses.

    Description

Abstract copyright UK Data Service and data collection copyright owner. The Annual Business Survey (ABS) is an annual survey of businesses covering the production, construction, distribution and service industries, which represents about two-thirds of the UK economy in terms of Gross Value Added (GVA). Every year, ABS questionnaires are sent by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) to around 62,000 businesses in Great Britain, and by the Department for Finance and Personnel Northern Ireland (DFPNI) to around 9,000 businesses in Northern Ireland. Data for Northern Ireland are not available from the UK Data Archive. The ABS is the largest business survey conducted by the ONS in terms of the combined number of respondents and variables it covers (62,000 questionnaires despatched in Great Britain, with around 600 different questions asked). It is the key resource for understanding the detailed structure and performance of businesses across the UK, and is a large contributor of business information to the UK National Accounts. ABS provides a number of high-level indicators of economic activity such as the total value of sales and work completed by businesses, the value of purchases of goods, materials and services, stocks, capital expenditure, and total employment costs. The contribution of different industries to the overall value of economic activity can be assessed and, although estimates of employment from each company are not now collected at the same time, by combining ABS with employment information from the Business Register and Employment Survey (BRES) it is also possible to get a measure of value added and costs per head to allow better comparison between industrial sectors of different sizes. The indicators in the ABS publications are collected and presented as monetary values or counts, for example, approximate Gross Value Added (aGVA), numbers of enterprises. They are essentially a snapshot of UK business activity, and can be used to understand the level of the contributions to the UK economy from different sectors of the economy at any one time. The ABS replaced the Annual Business Inquiry, Part 2 (ABI/2) in 2009, although ABS data are available for 2008. The BRES replaced the Annual Business Inquiry, Part 1 (ABI/1) in 2009. The BRES data for 2009 onwards are held separately under UK Data Archive SN 7463. ABI/1 and ABI/2 data for 2008 and earlier are held under UK Data Archive SN 6644, Annual Respondents Database: Secure Access (ARD). Researchers who are applying for access to the ABS and who also require data prior to 2008 are recommended to also apply for the ARD data under SN 6644. Linking to other business studies These data contain Inter-Departmental Business Register reference numbers. These are anonymous but unique reference numbers assigned to business organisations. Their inclusion allows researchers to combine different business survey sources together. Researchers may consider applying for other business data to assist their research. For Secure Lab projects applying for access to this study as well as to SN 6697 Business Structure Database and/or SN 7683 Business Structure Database Longitudinal, only postcode-free versions of the data will be made available. The market has experienced significant growth in recent years, driven by the increasing demand for advanced data management solutions in various industries. Graph databases, which utilize the property graph model to represent data as interconnected entities or vertices and relationships or edges, offer unique advantages for handling complex, interconnected data. This model is particularly well-suited for applications in social networks, recommendation engines, and business processes that require real-time analytics and visualization. Despite their benefits, graph databases face challenges such as a lack of standardization and the need for specialized skills for programming and managing these databases. The large enterprises segment is estimated to witness significant growth during the forecast period.

Graph databases have gained significant traction among large enterprises due to their ability to effectively model and analyze complex, interconnected data. Unlike traditional relational databases, graph databases naturally represent relationships between data entities, facilitating more efficient querying and analysis. This is particularly beneficial for businesses seeking real-time insights, such as customer behavior analysis, personalized marketing, and fraud detection. Graph databases enable fast data processing and offer advanced analytics tools, making them an ideal choice for industries like finance, logistics, and healthcare.

However, the lack of standardization and technical expertise required for graph database implementation can pose challenges. Popular graph database technologies include Cypher and Gremlin, based on the Property Graph model, which utilizes vertices, edges, labels, and indexes for data representation. Integration with recommendation engines, social networks, and data management solutions is essential for maximizing the value of graph databases. Cloud deployments in various data centers and regions provide flexibility and scalability. Despite these advantages, data silos and hoarding remain prevalent issues, necessitating data integration solutions for enterprise data unification.

    Description

Abstract copyright UK Data Service and data collection copyright owner. The Business Register and Employment Survey (BRES) is the official source of employee and employment estimates by detailed geography and industry. It is also used to update the Inter-Departmental Business Register (IDBR), the main sampling frame for business surveys conducted by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), with information on the structure of businesses in the UK. The survey collects employment information from businesses across the whole of the UK economy for each site that they operate. This allows the ONS to produce employee and employment estimates by detailed geography and industry split by full-time/part-time workers and whether the business is public/private. The ONS produces a number of different measures of employment including Workforce Jobs and the Annual Population Survey/Labour Force Survey. However, BRES is the recommended source of information on employment by detailed geography and industry. The BRES has two purposes: collecting data to update local unit information and business structures on the IDBR, and producing published annual employment statistics. The BRES sample does not include Northern Ireland. Northern Ireland data are received direct from the Northern Ireland Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment (DETINI) which are used to create UK estimates. The UK Data Archive holds data only for Great Britain. The BRES replaced the Annual Business Inquiry, Part 1 (ABI/1) in 2009. ABI/1 data for 2009 and earlier are held as part of the Annual Respondents Database under UK Data Archive SN 6644. Change in sampling from 2015-2016 In 2015, ONS made a strategic decision to include business units with a single PAYE code for which VAT data are available. Prior to 2015, such units were excluded from the sampling frame and therefore not estimated for in ONS outputs. So from January 2016, the coverage of BRES was extended to include a population of solely PAYE based businesses. This improvement in coverage is estimated to have increased the business survey population by around 100,000 businesses, with a total of around 300,000 employment and 200,000 employees between December 2015 and January 2016. The increase in business population has led to an increase in the estimate of employment and employees for the 2015 dataset. Further information is available in documentation file '7463_bres_2015_change_in_firm_sampling.pdf'. Linking to other business studies These data contain Inter-Departmental Business Register reference numbers. These are anonymous but unique reference numbers assigned to business organisations. Their inclusion allows researchers to combine different business survey sources together. Researchers may consider applying for other business data to assist their research. For Secure Lab projects applying for access to this study as well as to SN 6697 Business Structure Database and/or SN 7683 Business Structure Database Longitudinal, only postcode-free versions of the data will be made available.Latest edition informationFor the thirteenth edition (February 2024), the 'revised 2021' and 'provisional 2022' data files have been added.

    Description

The global in-memory database market size was valued at USD 10.5643 billion in 2025 and is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 16.19% during the forecast period (2025-2033). The growth of the market is attributed to the increasing adoption of in-memory databases in various industries to improve data processing speed and performance. In-memory databases store data in the computer's main memory (RAM) instead of on a physical disk, which allows for faster data access and retrieval. Key market drivers include the growing volume of data, the need for real-time data analysis, and the increasing adoption of cloud computing. The growing volume of data, often referred to as "big data," is a significant factor driving market growth. The need for real-time data analysis is another key driver, as in-memory databases can provide faster data access than traditional databases.
