    Time period covered
    1976 - 1988
    Area covered
    United States
    Description

The purpose of this study was to provide a description of both the current status and the changes in businesses and jobs in all United States counties, by 75 two-digit industry sectors. The study was designed to inquire to what extent new firm formation and small firm expansion reflect or cause economic growth. The data, originally assembled by Dun and Bradstreet, was edited and processed to adjust for errors and omissions to create a complete census of all business firms (single-site and multiple-site) and associated employment in six two-year periods: 1976-1978, 1978-1980, 1980-1982, 1982-1984, 1984-1986, and 1986-1988. The datasets contain detailed data for the years 1976-1988 on establishment births (new units entering the file), establishment deaths (existing units disappearing), expansion and contraction of all private-sector business establishments, and on the number of business jobs affected by these changes. Each record consists of a number of variables that (1) identify the county and industry, (2) describe the firms and jobs at the beginning of the two-year period, (3) provide descriptions at the end of the two-year period, and (4) that provide data on sources of changes during the two-year period. As the data are designed to be a complete census of all business units and all jobs, it can be aggregated to provide complete counts for any industry, region, or state or for the entire country.

    Description

Number local units or enterprises shows the number of businesses by employment size band. A local units is a place of work factory, a shop, or a branch. An enterprise can be thought of as the overall business, made up of all the individual sites or workplaces (local units). It is defined as the smallest combination of legal units (generally based on VAT and/or PAYE records) that has a certain degree of autonomy within an enterprise group. SME data can be found in these table. An SME is any business with less than 250 employees. Micro-enterprises have up to 10 employees. Small enterprises have up to 50 employees. Medium-sized enterprises have up to 250 employees. Figures are provided for VAT and/or PAYE based enterprises and local units. Where an enterprise has several local units, the location of the enterprise is generally the main operating site or the head office. Since 2008 the publication has been enhanced to include enterprises based on PAYE employers that are not also registered for VAT, extending the scope from the previous VAT based enterprise publication. This is a major change to the scope of the publication. The increase in units is most noticeable in the VAT-exempt industries of finance (J), education (M), health (N) and public administration (L, O and Q). Analysis for VAT and/or PAYE based enterprises can be found on the ONS website in their reports titled UK Business: Activity, Size and Location using the link below. Where an enterprise has several local units, the location of the enterprise is generally the main operating site or the head office. Data on size of firms (micro-business, SME, large) for business and employees in London by industry can be found on the ONS website. Trend data by MSOA is also available.

    Description

Numbers of people who work in an area by gender, and whether an employee or self-employed.

This data shows the number of jobs, not the number of people. People with more than one job are counted more than once.
Figures may not add up due to rounding. Figures are rounded to the nearest thousand. Percentages are rounded to one decimal place and were calculated on unrounded figures.
Employees - An employee is anyone aged 16 years or over that an organisation directly pays from its payroll(s), in return for carrying out a full-time or part-time job or being on a training scheme. It excludes voluntary workers, self-employed and working owners who are not paid via PAYE
People who are self-employed in a second job are included in the self-employed totals.
Self-employment data is taken from the Annual Population Survey, and is by place of work. The micro data is available from the UK Data Archive.
The male/female split for employee jobs was taken from the Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings data from NOMISweb.co.uk. These proportions were then applied to the BRES employee totals since the ASHE is a not a reliable source for total employee jobs.
