CA School Districts for 2013-2014 as supplied by the US Census.

School Districts are geographic entities and single purpose governmental units that operate schools and provide public educational services at the local level. The Census Bureau collects school district boundaries to develop annual estimates of children in poverty to help the U.S. Department of Education determine the annual allocation of Title I funding to states and school districts. NCES also uses the school district boundaries to develop a broad collection of district-level demographic estimates from the Census Bureau’s American Community Survey. The Census Bureau updates school district boundaries, names, local education agency codes, grade ranges, and school district levels biennially based on information provided by state education officials.

    Description
This layer serves as the authoritative geographic data source for all school district area boundaries in California. School districts are single purpose governmental units that operate schools and provide public educational services to residents within geographically defined areas. Agencies considered school districts that do not use geographically defined service areas to determine enrollment are excluded from this data set. In order to view districts represented as point locations, please see the "California School District Offices" layer. The school districts in this layer are enriched with additional district-level attribute information from the California Department of Education's data collections. These data elements add meaningful statistical and descriptive information that can be visualized and analyzed on a map and used to advance education research or inform decision making.

School districts are categorized as either elementary (primary), high (secondary) or unified based on the general grade range of the schools operated by the district. Elementary school districts provide education to the lower grade/age levels and the high school districts provide education to the upper grade/age levels while unified school districts provide education to all grade/age levels in their service areas. Boundaries for the elementary, high and unified school district layers are combined into a single file. The resulting composite layer includes areas of overlapping boundaries since elementary and high school districts each serve a different grade range of students within the same territory. The 'DistrictType' field can be used to filter and display districts separately by type.

Boundary lines are maintained by the California Department of Education (CDE) and are effective in the 2023-24 academic year . The CDE works collaboratively with the US Census Bureau to update and maintain boundary information as part of the federal School District Review Program (SDRP). The Census Bureau uses these school district boundaries to develop annual estimates of children in poverty to help the U.S. Department of Education determine the annual allocation of Title I funding to states and school districts. The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) also uses the school district boundaries to develop a broad collection of district-level demographic estimates from the Census Bureau’s American Community Survey (ACS).

The school district enrollment and demographic information are based on student enrollment counts collected on Fall Census Day (first Wednesday in October) in the 2023-24 academic year. These data elements are collected by the CDE through the California Longitudinal Achievement System (CALPADS) and can be accessed as publicly downloadable files from the Data & Statistics web page on the CDE website https://www.cde.ca.gov/ds.

    Description

This resource is a member of a series. The TIGER/Line shapefiles and related database files (.dbf) are an extract of selected geographic and cartographic information from the U.S. Census Bureau's Master Address File / Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing (MAF/TIGER) Database (MTDB). The MTDB represents a seamless national file with no overlaps or gaps between parts, however, each TIGER/Line shapefile is designed to stand alone as an independent data set, or they can be combined to cover the entire nation. School Districts are single-purpose administrative units within which local officials provide public educational services for the area's residents. The Census Bureau obtains the boundaries, names, local education agency codes, grade ranges, and school district levels for school districts from State officials for the primary purpose of providing the U.S. Department of Education with estimates of the number of children in poverty within each school district. This information serves as the basis for the Department of Education to determine the annual allocation of Title I funding to States and school districts. TIGER/Line Shapefiles include separate shapefiles for elementary, secondary and unified school districts. The school district boundaries are those in effect for the 2022-2023 school year, i.e., in operation as of January 1, 2023.

The California School Campus Database (CSCD) is now available for all public schools and colleges/universities in California.CSCD is a GIS data set that contains detailed outlines of the lands used by public schools for educational purposes. It includes campus boundaries of schools with kindergarten through 12th grade instruction, as well as colleges, universities, and public community colleges. Each is accurately mapped at the assessor parcel level. CSCD is the first statewide database of this information and is available for use without restriction.PURPOSEWhile data is available from the California Department of Education (CDE) at a point level, the data is simplified and often inaccurate.CSCD defines the entire school campus of all public schools to allow spatial analysis, including the full extent of lands used for public education in California. CSCD is suitable for a wide range of planning, assessment, analysis, and display purposes. The lands in CSCD are defined by the parcels owned, rented, leased, or used by a public California school district for the primary purpose of educating youth. CSCD provides vetted polygons representing each public school in the state.Data is also provided for community colleges and university lands as of the 2018 release.CSCD is suitable for a wide range of planning, assessment, analysis, and display purposes. It should not be used as the basis for official regulatory, legal, or other such governmental actions unless reviewed by the user and deemed appropriate for their use. See the user manual for more information.Link to California School Campus Database.

This layer serves as the authoritative geographic data source for all school district office locations in California. District office location and attribute information are derived from the California Department of Education"s (CDE) public schools and districts directory and district enrollment file.

Since the school districts in this layer are represented as point locations instead of service areas, this layer includes additional district types that do not use geographically defined service areas to determine enrollment such as county offices of education, state special schools and State Board of Education (SBE) charter schools. In order to view districts represented as service area polygons, please see the "California School District Areas" layer.

The school district enrollment and demographic information are based on the 2023-24 academic year student enrollment counts collected on Fall Census Day in 2023 (first Wednesday in October). These data elements are collected by the CDE through the California Longitudinal Achievement System (CALPADS) and can be accessed as a downloadable file from the Census Day Enrollment File page on the CDE website.

District records are assigned X, Y coordinates using a quality controlled geocoding and validation process to optimize positional accuracy. Most district offices are mapped to the office structure or centroid of the district office property parcel and are individually verified using aerial imagery or assessor"s parcels databases. Districts are assigned various geographic area values based on their mapped locations including state and federal legislative district identifiers and National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) locale codes.

    Description

Community engagement in planning is essential for effective and just climate adaptation. However, historically underserved communities are often difficult to reach through traditional means of soliciting public input. The Climate Adaptation Solutions Accelerator (CASA) through School-Community Hubs project identifies public schools as promising sites for building both community engagement and community capacity for climate adaptation. To serve in this role, schools need information about the intersecting threats climate change poses to the communities they serve. The Climate Hazard Dashboard for California Schools is a platform that maps the current and future risks associated with five climate hazards, including wildfire, extreme heat days, wildfire extreme precipitation, flooding, and sea level rise, for the nearly 10,000 public schools serving Kindergarten through Grade 12 students in California. Each hazard is mapped and visualized at the school level, providing an accessible way for administrators, teachers, students, and neighborhoods to explore data reflecting the climate hazards they face, at a scale relevant to their communities. The dashboard also provides an aggregate summary hazard metric. Methods Data for extreme heat and extreme precipitation were retrieved using API requests from the caladaptr package. The data retrieved to calculate extreme heat days were historical observed daily maximum temperature for 1961-2005 and projected daily maximum temperature for 2006-2064. The data retrieved to calculate extreme precipitation days were historical observed daily precipitation totals for 1961-2005 and projected daily precipitation totals for 2006-2064. Data for wildfire, flooding, and sea level rise were downloaded directly from their sources and stored in a remote server for use. All data were processed in R Studio using Quarto Docs. Tabular data for extreme heat and precipitation first used the retrieved historical data to calculate a threshold value to classify an extreme event. The threshold was determined to be the 98th percentile value of observed historical data for California. For extreme heat, this is 98°F. For extreme precipitation, this is 0.73 inches. Then, projected daily values exceeding these thresholds were assigned a 1, and those not exceeding assigned a 0. The count of projected extreme days within each year from 2005-2064 was then assigned to each California public school. Spatial data was mainly processed to serve mapping purposes in the dashboard. The wildfire raster was clipped to the boundaries of California and reclassified. The mean wildfire hazard potential score for each school area was also derived and attached to each school. The original FEMA flood polygons have many different classifications, which were reclassified into three categories: high risk, moderate to low risk, and undetermined risk. The percentage of each school area that falls within a high risk flood zone was also attached to each school. The sea level rise polygons simply describe the extent of flooding under a 0.8 feet sea level rise scenario and a 100-year coastal storm. The polygons were simplified to decrease map load times in the dashboard. The percentage of each school area affected by the sea level rise scenario and a 100-year coastal storm were also attached to each school. Description

This layer serves as the authoritative geographic data source for California's K-12 public school locations during the 2023-24 academic year. Schools are mapped as point locations and assigned coordinates based on the physical address of the school facility. The school records are enriched with additional demographic and performance variables from the California Department of Education's data collections. These data elements can be visualized and examined geographically to uncover patterns, solve problems and inform education policy decisions. The schools in this file represent a subset of all records contained in the CDE's public school directory database. This subset is restricted to K-12 public schools that were open in October 2023 to coincide with the official 2023-24 student enrollment counts collected on Fall Census Day in 2023 (first Wednesday in October). This layer also excludes nonpublic nonsectarian schools and district office schools. The CDE's California School Directory provides school location other basic school characteristics found in the layer's attribute table. The school enrollment, demographic and program data are collected by the CDE through the California Longitudinal Achievement System (CALPADS) and can be accessed as publicly downloadable files from the Data & Statistics web page on the CDE website. Schools are assigned X, Y coordinates using a quality controlled geocoding and validation process to optimize positional accuracy. Most schools are mapped to the school structure or centroid of the school property parcel and are individually verified using aerial imagery or assessor's parcels databases. Schools are assigned various geographic area values based on their mapped locations including state and federal legislative district identifiers and National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) locale codes.

    Description

The California State Lands Commission (CSLC) was created by the California Legislature in 1938 and given the authority and responsibility to manage certain public lands within the state. The public lands under the Commission’s jurisdiction are of two distinct types—sovereign lands acquired upon California’s admission into the Union in 1850; and certain federally granted lands including school lands, and swamp and overflowed lands. For purposes of this GIS data, sovereign lands are considered to be further divided into two general categories—fixed-boundary sovereign lands and ambulatory-boundary sovereign lands. The following lands are included in this data: Portions of the ambulatory-boundary for state sovereign lands at a specific point in time, for portions of the San Joaquin River. NOT INCLUDED IN THIS DATA: School lands: These are what remains of nearly 5.5 million acres throughout the state originally granted to California by Congress in 1853 to benefit public education. Fixed-boundary sovereign lands: These are sovereign, public trust lands having fixed boundaries as the result of land exchanges, boundary line agreements or court orders. Swamps and overflowed lands: These are what remain of federal lands granted to California by Congress in 1850 to encourage reclamation and development of agricultural lands. ALSO NOT INCLUDED IN THIS DATA: Ownership details within the U.S. Government meanders of Owens Lake. THIS DATA SUPERSEDES all previously published GIS information with respect to the above described state-owned lands under the jurisdiction of the CSLC.

This layer serves as the authoritative geographic data source for all school district office locations in California. District office location and attribute information are derived from the California Department of Education's (CDE) public schools and districts directory and district enrollment file.Since the school districts in this layer are represented as point locations instead of service areas, this layer includes additional district types that do not use geographically defined service areas to determine enrollment such as county offices of education, state special schools and State Board of Education (SBE) charter schools. In order to view districts represented as service area polygons, please see the "California School District Areas" layer. The school district enrollment and demographic information are based on the 2022-23 academic year student enrollment counts collected on Fall Census Day in 2022 (first Wednesday in October). These data elements are collected by the CDE through the California Longitudinal Achievement System (CALPADS) and can be accessed as publicly downloadable files from the Data & Statistics web page on the CDE website.District records are assigned X, Y coordinates using a quality controlled geocoding and validation process to optimize positional accuracy. Most district offices are mapped to the office structure or centroid of the district office property parcel and are individually verified using aerial imagery or assessor's parcels databases.
